They aren't big enough! That's the point. At this stage he can't be added without getting rid of at least two of the blokes you mentioned.

Because it's unbalanced even if we lose Merrett.

Your solution is essentially a one-for-one swap to an unbalanced midfield. AA defines madness as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
If you add in a couple of big bodies during trade week how is it unbalanced? You seen richmonds midfield grouping when dusty isn’t in there, which is a lot of the time.

It already is unbalanced. We have Merrett, Parish, McGrath and Shiel already occupying inside spots. No matter which way you spin it, even if Merrett leaves, that's an unbalanced midfield. You're proposing we draft an undersized midfilder because another undersized midfielder is about to leave, which maintains the status quo.
That's fine, but if Lachie Neale requested a trade, I'd find the midfield balance to make that work.
Okay, so which three of McGrath, Shiel, Merrett and Parish are you offloading?

We wouldn't just add Phillips though
Would assume we'll have 3x top 20 picks this year. if not more if we split them.
Add to that, we aren't leaving the bottom 4 for a couple of years i imagine. Gotta think about 2023 onwards...not next year in isolation

For Lachie Neale? Anyone bar McGrath.

You have to think about what we already have as well. Which is why drafting Phillips, and I do not give a shit if he becomes the next Gary Ablett junior, is a boneheaded idea!

It's not as easy as saying "Oh but we can trade bigger bodies in". It's not that simple. To trade a player in you have to convince them that this is the right place to be, that they want to be here. In case you haven't noticed, it isn't just the house that's on fire. It's the whole street. Drafting is a lot easier. You don't have to sell them the club. They just have to be not taken and for you to lock them in (barring academy and father sons, obviously).

So you’d happily miss out on the next gary ablett junior..
Yes but the guys we would be trading in aren’t ready made stars, they are guys starved of opportunity yet talented. Those guys just want to play afl week in week out, they don’t care where it’s at.

Merrett, Shiel and offload McGarth to back pocket. I'd entertain offers for Parish though.

Holy cow, this is taking being deliberately obtuse to a whole new level. Would Gary Ablett junior in his prime make us a better side? Absolutely! He's probably the best player of the past 20 years. Will it fix any of our issues? Absolutely not.

Okay, you get two offers. Similar money and opportunites. Essendon or Melbourne. Who do you choose?

if we hold 3x 1st rd picks, or 4 if we can split them, then we draft them
Maybe not all of them this year, but we are in rebuild mode now

Write the list out for the next 3 years.
Look at your scouting notes
Assume we're bottom 4 for the next couple of years
Build a strategy

Things a list management team should be doing already.

You are right. We are on fire. The quicker we turn the culture around the better. That comes with players with the right mindset.
If Phillips fits the bill, take him.
Probably worth noting Shiel is unlikely to be around when we're next challenging & Merrett is a big ? for next year. Perhaps something the list management team should be pressing hard on to avoid more disasters.

At this point Melbourne just, obviously. But who’s to say money and opportunities are the same, so it’s a pointless comparison. Most of those sort of players have to head to clubs out of the 8 for opportunities. Will be no different to players choosing to go north Melbourne/ Adelaide and they are in just as much shambles as us.

people say Melbourne because they look on the up
Dees are my 2nd team. I have a lot of mates who go for them. What we are feeling right now....imagine that pretty much every year in new and creative ways.

We hit the lowest of lows and managed some big signings.
I think that was part of the problem too. papered over cracks in the culture

not just this year, but we need to draft this culture out.

So it looks Joe is on his way to Brisbane, surely our first pick is now spent on Riley Thilthorpe if he is available.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

He has groin issues the last two years add that to our medical team eeek

History of groin issues. No thanks.

Would rather trade back and roll the dice on Baldwin.

With the knowledge he’s ruptured his ACL twice?

Hence late in the draft. He’s a top 10 talent if fit, worth the minimal risk.
Did the same think with Johnson last year pass no more injury prone players

not that fussed to focus on another highly touted key forward.

I think we've seen that they need decent service. if one falls into our laps in the future, great.
priority one needs to be building the midfield.

Any thoughts on Jackson Callow? Is he NGA of anyone? Might be worth looking at him otherwise if we have pick 15-20.

He seems to be a good size at 195cm and 93kg, and is KPF.
