I think to get pies future 1st wed have to give a bit more than say pick 10 for a Future 1st and pick 18 (this year). Atleast a swap of next years 2nd aswell and im still not sure they take that

And id say the pies are only taking that if theyre head over heels on Zac Reid

Nat Fyfe was a forward when drafted

People didnt see him becoming the mid he is

Freo thought hed fill out but i still dont think they could say honestly they saw him being this bull inside mid
Skinny HFF that could run his opponent into the ground, smart player with the best set of hands they’d seen and was kicking bags in the WAFL in his U18 year. If he hadn’t worked out as a mid/fwd he was going to play forward at AFL level.

To be clear, I’m not saying versatility is a bad thing, but it’s often applied to players that have some good qualities but don’t really fit in a mould, and they end up being second or third best in each of the positions they play. You want more than that from a pick 6, 7, 8.

Hooker is a KPD with versatility. Mitch Brown is a versatile tall. That’s the difference.

After a lot of reading and discussion I have my opinion on what we should do. The way this draft has panned out we have been a bit unlucky that the ideal midfielder for us, that 188cm type has most likely landed outside our pick zone. Would be great if Hollands could get to us but from most of the talk and questions I have asked it is only a remote chance.

I think the obvious right now is one of Reid or Cox. I think we only take one or the other given we will be taking Brand and Eyre and from what I hear both should receive bids in the 30-50 range. I have a slight leaning to Cox as he has played a little forward along with his very good defensive record.
Skills are good , is a strong mark and has a good tank. Would not be unhappy with Reid as he also has very good skills and a great engine and can play ruck if needed along with his defense.

To the midfield conundrum. I am working around Hollands not being available and Phillips also not being available. Would certainly take either or even both if that miracle happened.
But back to the real world and I am going Archie Perkins and Nathan O'Driscoll. Both bigger type midfield options. O'Driscoll is certainly a bit of a reach at 8 but I think we need to take a punt on needs. The other obvious option is Tanner Bruhn who is a smart midfielder and a very good player. He would be a worthy pick but given we traded to get Caldwell IMO we should go with the other two. What I like about Perkins is his marking ability to go along with the little bit of X factor. Has more exposure as a forward but has shown some good signs with his run and carry and as previously said is a strong mark which is something we lack around the ground. From all reports he has done a power of work this year on his running and endurance .Has shown some inside midfield form

So IMO I would be going
Cox
Perkins
O'Driscoll
Brand
Eyre
3 x KP and two midfield.
Would not be unhappy if it was Reid and not Cox.

Now the qualifier here is obviously I have seen none of these guys live this year and very little of their live stuff last year so there are no absolutes on my view.

Can Cox become an elite AFL wingman? Or is he going to be more like a Kepler Bradley style player with better foot skills?

I’m falling in love with Zach Reid. Looks to me like a Lever/Ridley type.

Good character, great endurance, great mover, great intercept mark, plenty of upside due to skinny frame...

Could be a steal.

eDPS does Henry have any ability to play half back like his brother? Overhead marking, kicking? Bounce and rebound?

From memory hes elite in the air with his hands and jumping.

Could he start his AFL career across half back and is he ready to go? If we use our 3rd first rounder he seems probably the next best available but very hard to have an impact as a medium forward for a few years

Cerra started pretty well across half back in year 2 due to team necessity. Sicily has gone back to great affect, Milera is another

I actually see him as a defender long term, played one game down back last year and dominated. He oozed confidence and skill and was a threat in the air. Reminded me a lot of Sicily

I see more Harris Andrews in him in he’d be able to curtail the opposition best forwards which would shift BZT to a more comfortable opponent. Reid’s kicking suggests to me he’s a no brainer, looks elite for his size.

Both him and Cox are elite kicks so both would be perfect. Just depends on how we see them developing and who dodo and RFK prefer. Would be amazed if neither is at the club next year unless say Thilthorpe slides and they take him, then a mid and then trade back with their final pick.

But questions are being raised IF cox could play in defence in a 1 on 1 key defender type role. I’d take Reid over Cox based on that.

I’d be happy if we traded out pick 8 which netted us Cox plus another first rounder.

He is 100% flying under the radar because of the profile of those top 3-4 talls IMO.

Is he a lockdown defender like Andrews though? It is he a floater like Lever, who can occasionally lockdown. That’s my only question mark. Looks a gem.

Pick 7: Bid B.Campbell
Pick 8: A.Perkins (M/F)
Pick 9: N.Cox (D/F)
Pick 10: Bid L.Jones
Pick 11: O.Henry (D/F/W)
Pick 39: S.Neale (R/F)
Brand
Eyre

I still like the sound of Cook. Him vs Henry would be interesting most seem to have Henry ahead.

Id like to see a Perkins/Henry played from round 1 HBF next year if were not going with Zac Merrett across half back

Some may view my logic as flawed, but I'm not interested in drafting KPDs (or any defender for that matter) in the top 10 unless the player has freakish talent.
KPFs, mids and ruckman should be prioritised in the top 10, especially the first two because A-grade mids and KPFs are much harder to find outside the first round.

It's why I'd select:

Cox (will play on a wing one day)
Perkins
O'Driscoll
Eyre
Brand

I wouldn't select Reid. If things don't work out for Eyre in the forwardline, then he has the athleticism to be playing as a defender. Cox can also play in defence if needed. No need to get both Reid and Cox.

Good KPDs, 3rd talls, and HB flankers can be found later in the draft. Other than Hurley and Francis, our whole defence last year was full of late picks and rookie picks. I'd say most of the top defenders in the league are late picks except Moore (who was originally a forward) and Weitering.

I’m guessing The highlights would be from his under 17 year, IMO when he fills out he’ll be an attacking lockdown defender which we desperately need against opposition gorillas.

For every shit defender picked in the top 10 there’s an even worse forward.

Don’t necessarily disagree with you though.

Well Cox is already a better defender than Bradley :p
Seriously , I can not say with any degree of accuracy as I have not seen enough of him play other than what I have seen his kicking and decision making looks a lot better.
Personally I think Bradley would have been a decent player if he was allowed to develop as a CHF.

Fair call.

So here is what i think might happen

1. McDonald (Adel)
2. Ugle-Hagan (WBD)
3. Hollands (NM)
4. Grainger-Barass (Syd)
5. Phillips (Haw)
6. Cox (GCS)

Now what i want to happen
Trade 6 and 68 to Adelaide for 10, 40 and 2021 2nd) so they can take Thilthorpe
We now have 7, 8, 9, 40 and 44
Then
7. Perkins
8. Henry

Then trade 9 and and 2 x 2021 3rds to Collingwood for (now) 16 and 2021 first

We then take O'Driscoll with 16 (will be 18 after Cambell amd Jones bids) and use 40 and 44 to match bids for Eyre & Brand.

We walk away with Perkins, Henry, O'Driscoll (all can play R1 2021 btw) and a 2021 draft haul of 2 x firsts, Adelaide 2nd not much else...

Lots of ifs buts and maybes, but here is hoping

What 200cm has actually worked on the wing?

I must admit i like your strategy. Im hopefuly Cox can eventually make it as a key forward and worst case scenario be an excellent defender. I believe in the same logic. Easiest position in the AFL to play is defense and hardest is as a forward
