He has been doing this, knows plenty and gets along with a lot of them. I’ve seen it first hand at games, how about giving the writer some respect, you don’t have to like the article but the writer is well regarded by the industry for his deft knowledge and is building very good relationships.

I am giving him respect and my observation is not based on any one article but as a collective over the draft period. Good on him, that's his job now. There's nothing wrong with saying it will take him a few more years for him to refine his craft and become on par with the industry standard.

After the year that he’s had without any exposure that’ll be three years of no exposure. What are his chances?

He’s lucky that VFL East Coast can expose him to adult competition and if necessary, other AFL clubs’ recruiters.

That and he’s a Falcons boy, Geelong typically keep touch with them throughout their careers.

Chances are limited for all eslecially year one. Will be up against it, a year off. Yeh they mightve all trained for the 2km race but thats not the game. A year out of the system then 3 months of AFL preseason ans your meant to be ready to go? Its a big call for many that didnt play this year to be able to train for 3 months and play round 1

But he trained against some quality at geelong for a short while

I’m reading this as I would read it about myself if it was said to me and it’s pretty insulting to say he isn’t ‘industry standard’ when he has done so much work over the years on all these things you said he needs work on. Just because he isn’t as well known as Twomey doesn’t make him any less knowledgeable or connected with the draft.

I think it’s just a different perspective tbh. For most of the world there’s just mainstream media, which consists of Twomey, Quayle and now Balmer. Quayle being out of the media game now obviously.

Everyone else in the mainstream bar those two is a general footy journalist who went to uni and now writes three random football articles per week, 48 weeks of the year (e.g. Daniel Cherny).

The comparison is a bit rough as Twomey has a decade of experience on the league’s own website, while Balmer is the new kid on the block without the credentials.

For those of us who are more familiar with the draft watching community, Balmer is more comparable with Draft Central, Knightmare and yourself, whom ordinary people will never have heard of. In that context Balmer is not even the best of them, but he’s one of the more experienced guys.

The result is that you have a guy who is very decent and respectable as far as Draft Watchers are concerned but has a bigger platform and seems overhyped from the outside.

Okay, firstly, I never said he wasn't good enough to be in the industry, I was referring to Cal as the 'industry standard' in that he is the top of the class at the moment and the level to aspire to.

And again, I'm not saying he isn't putting in the work, just that with more time he will become more rounded and by extension, better. A good example is his reporting of Will Phillips. A couple of weeks ago, he reported that Phillips was no longer seen as part of the leading five draftees. As he develops more networks (which he will now find easier as a Fox Footy employee), he will fare a much better chance of sifting through the muck and having a higher strike rate.

Finally, to reiterate again, the whole premise of this was my observation that Fox Footy could've handled his marketing better. Give him time to develop his own profile rather than straight away pit him against Twomey which is how it appeared.

Yeah sorry I did read that wrong, it is a fair stance but reading your original comment which was very harsh on him.

Happy to concede that, could've avoided a lot of keyboard wear on both sides if I had framed it better. :p

Happy with our draft. We need talls to replace Joe and Hooker, Hurls and even Ambrose in next year or two. Lot of teams with tall athletic forward doubts on BZT ... not like we don’t need them.
If Reid was BPA at his pick then no brainer. We’ve got Caldwell which is a virtual first round mid pick and can hit FA next year again for another mid.

I'm not quite as optimistic on that front. It means we're again relying on Heppell and Shiel to be our big bodied extractors. We'll be hoping Dunkley still wants to join us for 2022. I'm quietly hoping Sam Flanders is looking at his options...
Dunkley still on the radar for next year for sure I reckon. Not sure Bruhn is that big bodied mid that would've made a difference to be honest so I liked what we did. Other than Hollands and Perkins there wasn't much around in the top 10 in terms of big bodied mids.
Not much else we could've done imo.
Caldwell will take in some of that grunt work in the middle along with Parish. Hopefully both have solid pre-seasons in the weights room.

As a rookie? Makes sense if so

Only a portion (i think 75k) of a players salary is counted towards the cap. Otherwise they would carry a larger amount in their cap
It's 80k that doesn't get counted towards the cap. Obviously they talked to Bryce and they needed to put a certain amount of money next year into the cap so redrafting him and having him as a "coach" would mean less on the soft cap and they could make the cap floor

His knowledge might be good, but his rating are rubbish.

A+ / A / A- is idiotic for this kind of article.

The degree of graduation between a A- and a B+ might matter in academia, but it's pointless for something like rating a draft haul.

Simply doing A / B / C etc.. makes a lot more sense. C would be a team like GWS where they've done OK but have definitely reached on a few of their selections and so probably can't quite claim a resounding success on face value.

What’s the general thoughts in here regarding Dunkley? Ship sailed or was there a resolution to revisit circumstances again next year or year after when he’s OOC??
Probably the ship has sailed as everyone else will be asking the question of him now. But you never know. Hopefully the Dogs struggle to repair things and he presses to get out more strongly next time around and still favours us.

And that worked so well last night
I would expect it to be less frantic today, but that's the best I could find.

They really need to bring the draft tracker back next year

usually, there is a tracker or something as well. Maybe not this year.
Unfortunately not this year. Which was stupid as it was one of the only things the AFL have done well
