I hope we go for someone like Duval in the backline or Baker
A player I think you would like is Blake Schlensog (South Fremantle)

20 year old key back who has made 2/3 WAFL team of the week teams in his first year in the WAFL.

Recently he was delisted by the Cats and most on their board are confused by the delisting.

Got some good size on him.
I think much would come down to form of Reid, BZT and, to a lesser extent, Stewart.

From memory he played more forward and was recruited as a forward who had played ruck in the TAC .

Ultimately, I want a formidable backline without the need to play Cox back there to achieve it.

Finding a quality defender would be a great outcome.

I was more looking at a mid size to smaller defender

But I like the look of him especially if Hurley is on ice

Ah, fair enough. I honestly can't think of any other medium marking defenders in the conversation other than those you mentioned.

I respect Turbocat and his opinion, could he give some insight into why he was moved on last year?

He was a project Rookie B type that may or may not get there. Good size and had raw potential but I think he lacked football finesse and skill. he played a bit on the ruck and KPF at the Falcons.

As most know Geelong almost prefer to go and pay for a mature Pnp type rather than wait years. If they are going to wait and develop then they will do it for extreme highly talent specimens like SavRat, and BL was not Sav.

We all have seen guys who look nowhere near it and somehow thru time get there with persistence. Lets say an Oscar McDonald. Without the ability to be taken Rookie B , I doubt he would have been drafted. He was still growing into his body. We now have Tsap as a Rookie B , an ex Basketballer a little taller , perhaps more upside and has the height of a ruck.

If BS was going to make it at Geelong it was as a backman and I think it was thought Krueger had more potential, and Im not even convinced about Kreuger as a backman yet.We also added SDek and last year added Shannan Neale who athletically is superior and probably has better football attributes. So BL was probably last in the group of talls we had so they let him go.

How long do you have a player on your list before he is capable of the level? Only so many spots etc. BL only 20..so, by the time he is 22 to 23 he may actually be reasonable. It would not surprise if he got another chance somewhere once he matures.

eDPS who should we be keeping an eye on this game?

Apparently Papleys brother is a gun small forward
Papley has had a poor year so far but playing for the lowly Gippsland doesn’t help him. A fair few players to look out for just about everyone in both has a fair shout just depends on what we are after.

I would think another Ruck, Lock Down Small Defender, big bodied midfielder and a small forward

would be my shopping list

Not convinced we have one between Reid and Brand?

Not 100%. Good chance if things go right.

Adding another good young tall will increase the odds too.

It's a good time to add one with Reid being out with glandular fever. We could have Brand and Schlensog as our VFL backs in the 2nd half of the season.

eDPS what are your thoughts on us targeting Trudgeon
Not a bad option, we need midfield depth and he can go forward to good effect. His disposal and speed would be his main issue.

Can we just kill 2 birds with 1 stone and get a big inside midfielder that pushes Mcgrath into his natural position as a rebounding small defender?

Bomber Thompson was a captain of a premiership team in that position? If it was good enough for him it’s good enough for Mcgrath who played his junior footy in that role?

I just see that as his natural position who can pinch hit in the midfield in the second half of games if we need more run and carry.

A player we should consider is Jai Newcombe. 19 year old inside mid for the Box Hill Hawks.

He is the right size for us at 185cm. Moves pretty well, very good by hand.

I really like that he did it the hard way, fighting through country football after being overlooked for NAB League.

He is averaging 22 touches and 7 tackles in the VFL.

You mean the McGrath who was the best clearance player on the weekend, yeah?

The same McGrath that (from memory) was BOG as a Midfielder in the TAC Cup?

yeah, 2 games? the same that was being bagged out for the Carlton game.

The same that won rookie of the year as a HB, back pocket player who shut down Eddie Betts in Adelaide.

you mean that guy?

He's a defensively minded midfielder that can also play as a small defender if needed.

He's not a small defender who can also play as a midfielder.

People get this the wrong way around regularly.

It's like how Dangerfield & Martin are midfielders that can play as full-forwards.

Andy is a midfielder. He was drafted as a midfielder, averaging 32 touches in his TAC cup year. He also had 38 touches (21 contested) and 8 clearances in the granny for sandy. He is a ****ing midfielder. Stop saying that he should play in defense he legit had 12 clearances on the weekend the kid is a gun. He's only 22, and already one of our best mids. Just because he had a couple of average games (by his own standards) doesn't mean he should be moved to half back. Yes his disposal efficiency isn't amazing but not many inside midfielders are too good in that category, let alone 22 year old ones, playing in their second season in the midfield (the first being last year where he was one of our most consistent players before he was rubbed out for the season with syndesmosis). Their job is just to get it out of the pack and give it to the likes of Merrett.
Half of yous need to shut up with this nonsense about moving him back, we don't have enough defensive mids as it is, let alone good ones. Him parish, Merrett, caldwell and Perkins are setting up a very very high quality and classy centre bounce mix in the future for the first time in a very long time.
