It’s hard to predict which way the club will go and how many picks we actually use. Personally I’d grab Charlie McKay as he can potentially fill two holes as either a contested beast midfielder or a defensive stopper. From what I’ve seen so far there isn’t many 19 year olds that look like being instant fixes to our list for the here and now so we may just take the best 19 year old talent we can get no matter the position or just play safe and take an Essendon VFL listed player like Dunkley, Atley, McLarty or O’Kearney.
Rather than instant fix, is there anyone you'd approach the MSD with as another round of the 2020 draft with more exposure?
i.e. any kids (Maher, Corrigan, etc.) that you'd look to the future with.

At this stage i'd be maximising the picks with Hurley (LTI), Moz (LTI) & McQuillan to help with the rebuild.

McQuillan's spot has been used on Baldwin.

We can also throw Shiel and Caldwell on there if we really want, as it sounds like they're unlikely to be fit until the last few weeks of the season at this point and may be better to shelve them until 2022.

In the last 6 years, most of the players we have drafted after pick 50 of note have been players that would be availiable in a MSD. There are very few exceptions.

Mitch Brown (mature age)
Michael Hartley (mature age)
Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (mature age)
Dylan Clarke (junior)
Sam Draper (junior)
Zerk-Thatcher (19-year-old)
Matt Guelfi (mature age)
Brayden Ham (19-year-old)
Ned Cahill (junior)

I guess in my mind the question is:

Do we want to pick MSD eligible types in June or November?

Thanks for this! Since the success of picking up Snelling, the MSD is really exciting. He's been super for us, great value and I think he's really found his place in the team. Don't think we need a quick fix type player at any position but just finding a gem that can build/grow with the rest of the team.

Personally would love a midfielder in the MSD (and a ruck). If we have 3 picks then take a second mid.

i did initially think Shiel could be a candidate rather than risk him
Caldwell i still hope isn't as bad as it seemed and will get a 1/3 of a season in the team.

3 would be plenty imo.

I'd like to see us load up in the MSD and see what shakes loose, Shiel I'd definitely throw on there as he doesn't need to get games in, Caldwell would benefit if he's likely to get on the park and fit though, I agree.

We have practically 0 selection pressure right now.

It's not a good situation for either the short term or long term.

We should try to change that at the MSD.

What do you think causes this? (And therefore, what might the solution be, specifically?)

1/ 11 players on the injury list

2/ Players who aren't ready yet: Eyre, McBride, Johnson, Hird, Brand

3/ Reduced list sizes

We can't do anything about point 2 or 3. Point 1 gives us the opportunity to replace some of the long-term injured with MSD draftees.

I would be happy to use our first pick in the MSD on a 19-year-old. Use the other picks on players who are 20 years-old to 24 years-old who aren't injury prone, don't need to be the number 1 player to make an impact, and can use the ball competently. Most players who fit that description would fit above Cahill on the depth chart.

Not 100% on this but I have heard we may be looking at using two picks.
It will be interesting to see which way they go given the 19 year old players have not quite produced what many had hoped they would so far.

Why wouldn't we use 2 picks if we have the spots? Nothing to lose isn't there (other than a smallish amount of money).

If Josh Green keeps up his form in the vfl I’d be happy to pick him or Charlie Mckay. Liam Conway is another one is hope essendon care keeping an eye on. I imagine most 19yos managers will be making them go for the 18 month contract aswell so they don’t have a cody Hirst situation .

All I was saying is they may be looking at 2.If they put everyone on the LTI they could have 4 , not that they will.
