Draft whispers, rumours & scuttlebut

You lot need a small forward, don't see what's wrong with taking him?

He's not even close to as good as some of the other players available IMO. We'd be drafting him in part for his physical traits and in part because he's a Rioli. Not because of his output so far. I'm just not comfortable with that.

Didn't Cyril do something very similar?

Wingard told Giants if you pick me I'll go home in 2 years. Brody Grundy was weird in interviews.

Happens every year.
Brody Grundy is a weird unit in general. I don't think he purposely tried to act that way in interviews, it's just the way he is. He's been described multiple times by the players and coach as 'a different cat'.

Everyone seems to like him though. Stoked we got him so late in the first round.

Apparently Ryan Burton has received a late invite to the draft night according to Emma's Twitter. Could mean absolutely nothing, could mean he has bolted up, and someone is taking a big gamble.
They want the top 10 to be there. He could be in the frame for Carlton's pick 8 that could be pick 10 although more likely 11.

But really I'm not sure why he wasn't invited anyway. Any South Australians very likely to be drafted should be there so they can be interviewed afterwards.

If Burton goes to one of the Crows first round picks with the draft in Adelaide it would be a shame to have him sitting at home when he could be there.

Kennedy might be bidded on a lot later than most feel I guess, so maybe Carlton's pick 8 is pick 10, so that could make sense. I agree with inviting locals though.

You guys seem to be pretty keen on Emma Quayle's mock draft, I'll admit I've never read her before, but I'm not that impressed after looking at pick 5,6 & 7.
Surely, if Essendon have any inclination to bid on an academy kid, they do it with their first pick, not their second, forcing said team (likely GWS) to use the maximum number of draft points to get their man. Having 2 picks in a row gives them a unique opportunity to make sure this happens.

If you were to rank journalists over the last 5 years on their draft knowledge and predictions, Emma Quayle would be at the top of that list.
No one ever gets it all right, but she has consistently been the most knowledgeable of the lot when it comes to drafts.

Burgurton was a bit better, but Emma is very good. That said Emma is helped by putting her draft out less than 24 hours out. However it does give a very very good guide.

Feel good story. Local lad drafted by the Crows, living the dream after horrendous injuries. However if Crows take Curnow, Blues could take Burton. We have been in to him a bit.

Not surprised at all. I'm still bullish on Burton to Carlton at 10 than Collins with their next pick

Curnow the stumbling block. Not sure we would go Curnow and Burton. Seems an 'or' situation even if we we take Curnow at 8 and McKay goes at 9. Time will tell.

Like I said, I haven't read any of her stuff, so I'm happy to take all you guys word for it.
However I do still question the logic of Essendon making a selection with their first pick, and then bidding on an academy player with their 2nd, as she is suggesting. If they plan to bid on an academy kid, it will be with their first selection, surely.
It's only a minor thing, I'm certainly not judging her ability solely on this, but I would think it is one of those details that a pro should probably get right.

Then again, maybe she is completely right about it and I'm a complete fool, guess we'll find out in a few hours...

She has consistently put more research into the kids but also being a legitimate mainstream journalist also has access to club list managers. She has consistently been very close to the mark. Having said that you also have to wonder sometimes if list managers would potentially use her to put misinformation out there.

From a Carlton perspective, we've had 3 different people say that we are taking Weitering, H.McKay and Curnow.

This is a really entertaining draft that is more speculative that usual.

It seems theres gonna be a lot of hits and misses, regrets, gems dug out late, early picks busts - every thing a good draft should be.

Will be fascinating to watch this play out over the next few years.

True, we will find out and you may well be right. I'm only going on her accuracy over the past 5 or so years and she's been on the money mostly.
When you compare a journalist who checks her facts, does her research and is devoted to being an expert in one area of the game, the result should always be more accurate. I'd certainly take Quayle's views more seriously than the sort of tripe we get from Trade Radio, which is a week full of complete tripe and speculation, presented by mental short people. Shifter Sheehan is also worth listening to, he speaks his mind, knows his trade and knows just about everything about the kids in the draft.

Well I'm glad that Carlton is going about the rebuild more sensibly this time. Get your spine first and then your big body mids. While they take 5 years to develop you can keep topping up those key posts but focus on the run and carry players. Carlton went about it backwards last time.

God I long for the days when the bombers can battle you bunch of campaigners deep in the finals again.

As the draft has gotten closer and ya read up about all the players it doesn't feel like the weak draft people are calling it. There is a good 30 who at this stage don't look any weaker than last year. After that it's always going to be more miss than hit.
Looking forward to it!

saints apparently very keen on collins

I like Collins but surely he's not required with Goddard and Carlisle on the list. Unless we've got 2 or 3 players committed to coming to us via FA/trade next year we absolutely need to take a mid with our first pick. In hindsight I would have preferred that we traded pick 5 for two later first round picks and kept 24. We could have ended up with a haul along the lines of Gresham, Collins and Mathieson with our first three picks, Rice with our third rounder and Sinclair upgraded.
