Why do you say Carlton are "losers" in this draft?

To me they seemed to hit on two major needs the club had mentioned pre-draft (i.e., a POD mid and KPD depth to develop under Weitering). Picked up a nice ball user in defence in the rookie draft and the two Camporeale brothers for practically nothing.

Love the people using hindsight constantly with Essendon's pick. If we had pick 9 still, we would have lost it on Kako as we definitely would have matched and the criticism would have been higher. Made the best of a situation where you can only gain criticism.

At the end of the day, we got a top 10 pick, addwd two high picks next year. Picked big Kayle who could be Paul Salmon or Kepler Bradley and got an elite kick who can run all day in Angus Clarke.

He's just liked and trusted by clubs. Doesn't give away their secrets, just takes what he needs. Very rare a journo has the trust of clubs.

Clearly the winners are the Richmond trolls who get the chance to suggest we got it wrong taking Lalor at 1 and Smillie at 7, that player X would have been better at pick 12 or 14, that we would have been better off trading certain picks for certain other picks and of course highlighting how we only had all these picks because (a) we won the wooden spoon and (b) contracted players left the club (something something culture).

You generally only get one crack at the elite end of the draft every 12 months. Everything of value was sold for this draft, unless you've got another Bolton/Rioli/Baker trio hidden away. Thanks to North it'll be a couple of cracks next year but then you're on the drip feed system. The success or failure of the 2024 draft will be the backbone of Richmond's rebuild, that's why I said they need to be the winners more than anyone else.

Our flag sides only had 3 top 10 picks that we drafted.

The real make or break is the clever recruiting through rookies and later picks, as well as trades and FA of course.

I think you gave up too much for pick 3 and Jagga Smith doesn't have as much upside to the other top 7 mids imo.

I don't understand North's thinking trading away a future first for a second rounder

It’s simple really.

2024:

- North get pick 27 and pick up Matt Witlock.

2025 when Richmond finish bottom (surprising no-one) and North finish top (surprising everyone):

• Richmond end up with pick 25ish (if Lions’ 2024 1st round pick is any indication)
• North end up with pick 28ish (if Tigers’ 2024 2nd round pick is any indication)

If that were to happen, it’ll seem like an excellent trade from North’s point of view. Even if North don’t make it quite that high they’ll still have done well out of the trade.

The wider AFL community are used to North being on the bottom, but they’re not going to be there forever. You have admire that they’re now backing themselves rather than putting their hand out for charity picks.
