Victorian Tyrone Vickery is a key prospect in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft
Today's headlines

Tyrone Vickery

DOB: 31/5/90
Height: 200cm
Weight: 86kg
Club: Sandringham/Haileybury College

Vickery is a strong-marking ruckman who can go forward with great effect. He is a competitive player with good decision-making ability. A Vic Metro under-18 representative in 2008, winning All-Australian honours. An AIS/AFL Academy graduate. From Haileybury College.

Strengths?
I think I’m very good at competing in the air. I try either to mark it or bring it to the front for our crumbers. Just some honest contests and I try and not just be a tall player but an athletic player as well, and I try to lay some tackles.

Weaknesses?
I’m still working on my endurance. I’ve had to cut back on the running to make sure my knee doesn’t flare up again or anything, or swell up. But now the carnival’s over I’m going to look at training a lot more for my running and hopefully run out games better.

Which AFL team do you support?
Richmond.

Which AFL player do you feel you most resemble?
The two (Richmond) ruckmen, Troy Simmonds and Adam Pattison. I think both are different types of ruckmen but I admire both very much. And obviously Matthew Richardson when I’m up forward; his work rate’s exceptional.

I admire Dean Cox, the fact that he’s a ruckman as well, the fact that he doesn’t just sit back, he’s considered another on-baller is really good I think, so I try and model myself on people like that. Even hard defenders – I like Leo Barry. I like his run, his flair.

Full coverage of the 2008 NAB AFL Draft
-------------------------------------------------------------

Round One:

  • Jackson Trengove (athletic, strong KPP, fighting spirit)
Round Three:

  • Jamie Sheahan (quick, in and under mid)
  • Luke Shuehy (hard running and competitive midfielder)
  • Dayne Beams (tough as nails mid)
  • Jayden Post (tall key defender, takes a good mark)
Round Four:
  • Rory Sloane (in and under, hard running small defender)
Round Five:

  • Ben Cousins??
This would be an un-believable draft for us...although i should think if we take trengove in the 1st round we probs wont take another key defender in the 3rd round...although now that i think about it trengove could be usefull up forward as well. I just don't think we'll pass up beams or shuehy if they're still around at our second/third picks
I would be absolutely stoked if we got blokes like this come draft day though:thumbsu:

Quick Question for those who know more about st kilda's recruiting style than myself (very little)

Do you think we'll be looking for a young ruckman at all during the ND, or do you think that considering we already have big blakey McGrath on the rookie list now that it is un-necessary to draft another?

Will it be a case of if there is a young ruckman who we believe to be the best available that this even comes into consideration?

Cheers,
Saint Mara

The way I see it the only really good first round picks we have made were bloody obvious at the time, and the rest of the draft is hit or miss.
Most of the rest of it is a lottery.

The trouble is if you take a "Brett Voss" to ensure you dont get a McGough, you might miss out on a Sam Fisher.

One big hole in the Saints drafting has been with Milne being the only successful rookie until Jones.

It was mentioned by Lyon or Fraser that we will be taking a ruckman, most likely in the last round or two. But that was prior to McGrath's elevation.

We have 6 picks people, what do we do with them?

13: KP (Trengove, Johnston)
47: Small Defender (Sloane)
48: Opposite to the 1st round (Sibosado, Milne)
62: Midfield (Banner, Banfield)
74: Ruck (Clarke, Renton)
82: Recycle (Cousins, Carroll)

Pick numbers don't think are right but they're around the mark.

Given we have Macca, McGrath, King, Gardiner, Kosi, and Blake(emergency only ). We are not set too badly for rucks.
But King and Gardiner would not have too many years left in them, and there is no guarantee that McGrath and Macca will turn out OK.
The good thing is that if you end up with too many rucks they tend to be tradeable.
Still I would have thought that key backs and forwards would be more of a concern for us at the moment.

The thing about big men and ruckmen though is that they take a fair while to develop into the decent can run half a game out and not get slaughtered type, so while we might be god up for ruck stocks we're also hoping that our stocks come along before Kingy and Gards either retire or are forced out through form. So it never relaly hurts to have more than your quota (2 primary, 1-2 emergency, 2 development) since ruckmen can also, as shown by current ruckmen play forward as well.

Blake is a different case entirely in that really he's a dying breed of genuine utilities in that he can play ruck, back, ruck rover, forward all well enough on his day, to an extent Kosi can also do this but is of course rather sporadic.

Brothers and sisters are we all sold on Trengrove?

I'm very nervous if we drafted him and he fell over. I realise he's received a medical clearance, but it's going to be tough "getting back on the horse" so to speak under the auspices of your first AFL pre-season. If we get the Cuz man as well it's going to be 2 players we have snaffled with a fair degree of risk.

Can someone calm me down?

yeah, i think you raise a valid point L2M4G.. however with every draft pick there is an element of risk, everyone expects players to be sure things but it just doesn't happen that way.. if our Recruitment Department has enough confidence to pick him then i'll be convinced:thumbsu:

I think he would be a pretty good pick at 13 mate..

I personally want us to get yarran for just something different up forward, i think we are to predictable. Plus Yarran could play next year..

But my second choice would probably be trengove, thats if sidebottom or another gun mid doesnt slide..

It also wouldnt bother me if we choose best available with every pick as we dont have any major holes like some other clubs.

also L2MFG remember players from previous years who have slide because of injury concern.. Joel Selwood, Chris Judd to name a few..

I've got my Yarran pom poms out.

You make good points my brother.

I want a player who can step in immediately.

This guy oozes talent. Have a look at 3:30. God i hope Essendon take Sidebottom or Hill, and then Carlton take Hurley.

okay guys this is how i went in the Official Phantom Draft on the D&T board..

St.Kilda - Bourky23
Pick 13 - Lewis Johnston - KP Forward - 192cm, 87kg - North Adelaide, SA

Pick 47 - Jamie Sheahan - Midfielder - 178cm, 73kg - Murray Bushrangers, Vic

Pick 48 - Jordan Jones - KP Defender/Third Tall - 190cm, 90kg - Geelong Falcons, Vic

Pick 62 - Kade Klemke - Small Defender - 180cm, 78kg - Murray Bushrangers, NSW

Pick 74 - Ben Cousins - Saviour - 179cm, 87kg - West Coast/Free Agent

Pick 83 - Alex Silvagni - KP Defender - 192cm, 92kg - Casey Scorpions, Vic

overall i was reasonably happy with how i went.. took Lewis Johnston at pick 13 because he was too good to pass up and i think he could begin his career at HFF and be a great linkman (Ryan O'Keefe type role) before developing into a real pure CHF.. all of our picks can have immediate impact yet still have ton's of improvement in them (bar cousins of course)

would love to hear your thoughts guys:thumbsu:

Silvagni at pick 83 is pretty damn good, in the VFL he plays on pretty decent fowards week in week out and performs well a majority of the time, young, quick and confident yet not cocky.

This years draft has me excited there are great players that you could pick up 2nd or 3rd round. These 2nd and 3rd round players in years gone by could be picked up as potential top 10's.

Interesting to see that Richmond do a pre draft infomation night. They run down all their selections, name and explain who they're going for at what pick including their smokeys. All info is kept very confidential and not spoken about until the morning of the draft. Great idea i reckon. If only the Saints did something similar.

What is the likelihood that Yarran will still be there at 13 i have read so many different articles about him, that he is the 2nd best in the draft or he will defo be there for us. Or we shouldnt take him because hes not right for us. im getting so confused HELP

Apparently Essendon are keen on him but are still tossing up between him Hurley and Sidebottom. Carlton are seen as the biggest threat to snatching him. If Rich is still available they'll take him, Hurley in the mix too. IMO if he gets past Essendon and Carlton there's a very very good chance he'll still be there at 13. As far as being rated as high as 2 is correct. If he can add more strings to his bow and move into the midfield he is expected to be as good as McLeod, Burgoyne and Winmar. Whoever said he's not right for us is nuts. Would play that medium forward role as soon as round 1, give us another option down forward and add some much needed pace. Hoping and preying he's still around but I can't see him getting past Carlton. :(

Michael Walters

DOB: 7/1/1991
Height: 177cm
Weight: 75kg
Club: Swan Districts/Midvale JFC

A highly-skilled midfielder/forward, with great ability with both hand and foot. He has good awareness, agility and can win the ball in contested or uncontested situations. An AIS/AFL Academy graduate, and WA state under-18 representative in 2008. From Midvale FC.

Watch highlights of Michael Walters in action

What sort of player are you?
I normally play rover, swapping forward pocket.

Strengths?
Probably my offensive skills. I like set someone up in the centre or push forward and try to kick a goal when I can.

Weaknesses?
My fitness.

Which AFL team do you support?
I go for Geelong.

Which AFL player do you feel you most resemble?
I’d really like to play like Gary Ablett but I don’t reckon I’m at that level yet. I’ve got to get a bit fitter and I’ve got to become better defensively.

Given that we wont be drafting Cousins at pick 6 what would be best or worst.

Drafting Carroll.
Re-drafting Fiora and saving paying out his contract.
Drafting Illes
Re-drafting Attard
Re-drafting Howard as a senior so that we can get a new rookie.
Drafting a young guy at pick seventy something.

I tend to favour getting Attard back, but I am worried that the club will get Fiora ( he was the last to be delisted ).

I'd say keep Howard as a rookie prospect since that gives him the prospect to be added to the main list again if he really wants to be there.

Iles over Carroll in my eyes since he is 21ish so can fit the whole youth aspect as well, although if we can get him and then get Attard back I think that'd probably sew up later picks and keep with a youth policy, since who knows, maybe they'll also draft Attard back as a rookie again (possible?).

Eh, why not?

Draft countdown: Jack Watts

Jack Watts is a highly-rated forward

Jack Watts

DOB: 26/3/91
Height: 195cm
Weight: 83kg
Club: Sandringham U18/Brighton Grammar

An athletic, strong marking tall forward with pace who is an excellent shot on goal, Watts was a Vic Metro U18 Representative in 2008, winning the Larke Medal and All-Australian honours.

Watch highlights of Jack Watts in action
What sort of player are you?
I tend to play mostly as a mobile, tall forward - but I also played a bit off half back, in both the AIS and Sandy Dragons games.

Strengths?
I think I am a good kick on both sides of my body and that can help provide options when in traffic.

Weaknesses?
I need to get a stronger body and need to get fitter

Which AFL team do you support?
None really. Over a period I have followed the Sydney Swans, Bombers, Saints and Cats.

Which AFL player do you feel you most resemble?
When I get bigger, I would hope I can play with the best attributes that players like Nick Riewoldt, Adam Goodes and Dean Cox have. A couple of extra inches height and about 15kg in weight would be handy.

Burgo's phantom draft:

13 – ST KILDA – SAM BLEASE
Eastern Ranges, VIC, Small/medium midfielder, February 19, 1991, 183.7cm, 70.3kg
(Draft range: 7-18)

Yarran would be snapped up in a second if he fell through to St Kilda at No.13, with Sidebottom and Trengove also in contention. More likely prospects are Blease, Tom Lynch and Roughead. And Blease is the one who has been strongly linked with the Saints all along. Had the Saints decided to pursue Ben Cousins the Saints would have had to take him at No.13, considering the rival Lions had two selections (No.25 and No.41), before St Kilda's next choice.

47 – ST KILDA – STEVEN GAERTNER
Dandenong Stingrays, VIC, Tall defender, January 2, 1990, 199.3cm, 86.6kg
(Draft range: 31-not selected)

Until Tuesday night, picks No.47 or No.48 were viewed as the ones the Saints might use to snare West Coast great Ben Cousins. Instead, after a lengthy review, the Saints withdrew from pursuing him. One player who could now come under serious consideration here is Gaertner , one of the best athletic talls in the draft. Despite this, he divides opinion on where he sits in the overall scheme of things. Some believe he could be on the fringe of the top 30 and others think he is a rookie. It is not out of the question that he could also be selected by the Western Bulldogs (31 or 32), Collingwood (45, 46 or 73) or the Sydney Swans (30 or 61). It is understood St Kilda came within an inch of drafting him in 2007.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=70194

48 – ST KILDA – MATTHEW DEBOER
Claremont, WA, Medium midfielder, March 10, 1990, 186.7cm, 83kg
(Draft range: 37-not selected)

DeBoer is a 50/50 chance despite an outstanding year at for a player of his age. Again, he could be close to the top 30 or taken as a rookie. Collingwood, Fremantle and North Melbourne have all been linked. If Post or Gillies are available, look out for them at St Kilda's consecutive picks, with Shiels and Hunt also in the mix.

62 – ST KILDA – TAYLOR HUNT
Sandringham Dragons, VIC, Medium defender, November 5, 1990, 182.6cm, 83.4kg
(Draft range: 45-not selected)

The former discus and javelin thrower has attracted the interest of St Kilda, Hawthorn and Collingwood. The Saints have been monitoring him for some time, as he fits the small, speedy type running from defence and into the midfield they seek. Young and Thompson will be monitored with Luke Lowden, Campbell Heath, Brayden O'Hara, Alex Stopp or Tim Ruffles also in contention at No.62, No.74 or No.83 for the Saints.

74 – ST KILDA – LUKE LOWDEN
Sandringham Dragons, VIC, Ruckman, February 22, 1991, 204cm, 86.8kg
(Draft range: 47-not selected)

The towering young ruckman is believed to be firmly in the sights of the Saints and could be plucked as early as their second pick at No.47. He does seem more likely as a late pick, given he is a bottom-age player and very raw. Don't discount Bail, if available, at this selection either.

83 – ST KILDA – NATHAN CARROLL
Melbourne, WA, Tall defender, October 20, 1980, 191cm, 91kg
(Draft range: 74-not selected)

It's unlikely any other club will select Carroll, who like Davis could be about to join his third club (he was a Fremantle rookie before joining Melbourne). Carroll parted ways with Melbourne after the second list lodgment and although he was still contracted to the Demons, he severed his ties following some off-field incidents. His no-frills style of play, Carroll could offer the Saints some good service assisting the likes of Max Hudghton down back. Oft-maligned, many forget Carroll was one of the AFL's best performed full-backs in 2006. Expect Carroll to be St Kilda's final selection now, given it has pulled out of the Cousins race.

Gotta say i'd be fairly unhappy with this outcome.
