Draft

According to the Burgatron:

Steele Sidebottom won't get past StKilda if he is there.
Yarran would be snapped up in a second if he fell through to St Kilda at No.13,
It is understood St Kilda came within an inch of drafting Steve Gaertner in 2007.

i'll be mighty pissed off if we draft Gaertner with Pick 13, 47 or 48.

i really don't think he'll make it. good mark and that's it

soft, skinny, doesn't work hard enough..

Go back and look at the game he played on John Butcher in prelim ask Butcher how hard he worked that day.
You are a joke Bourky, why comment on something you know nothing about

just thought id let u guys know that i hear from good sources sean Tighe from the jets could be a late pick up for u guys. apparently ur recruitors met with him this week and told him he could be late pick up. i know the talk about him is that he would be a definite to be drafted next year, but still bottom aged and could be a surprise this year.

FYI pw Bourky is one of the more knowledgable posters when it comes to the draft. He knows what he's talking about.

Butcher is the supposed number 1 draft pick next year. To young to be drafted this year but is 'supposedly' better than Watts.

What type of player is Sean Tighe? Never heard of him.

"Ruckman" who seems good at ground level (stats I'm seeing show 20+ Hitouts as well as 20+ possessions rather often) he's considered one of the jets better prospects as far as overall talent goes "often associated with "star and such" so he seemed to at least be able to hold his own in the ruck at that level. He was named the most improved player for the Jets this year I believe.

surely we can't take carrol with our brand new youth policy...

Insurance for Maguire.......don't have a problem with this.

look, maybe i was a bit harsh on him. but Gaertner really frustrates me. I won't deny he is a talented footballer but he just doesn't seem to want it.. i never said i was against drafting him but i don't want to take him with any of our early picks. there is no doubt he lifted his work rate late this season but look for some reason i'm not sold on him.

care to convince me otherwise?

Can I ask who the _uck Butcher is, given he was not mentioned in Burgatron's list at all?

one of the better talls in next years crop. (probably the best).. dominated a few games in the nationals this year and is earmarked as a cantidate for next years number 1 pick if he stays fit and keeps the form up.

not eligible for this years draft

(and is a mad saints supporter!:p)

I actually dont have a problem with it either, Carroll isn't as bad as a lot of people make him out to be imo, but I mean now that the club has come out and stated they have a youth policy and that that was one of the reasons for not recruiting Cousins, won't it look hypocritical of them to recruit Carroll?

I don't mind us getting Carrol because I think I know the real reason we didn't get Cousins.

I would have thought that Johnstone would be an OK pick if he was still there at 13, but it seems that we arent interested.

My personal opinion is to let Carroll pass....it smacks of hypocrassy to not draft BC but then take Carroll. Similar problems, similar attitude issues (granted, not the same)....however....one is a Brownlow medalist/premiership player, one was an ordinary player in a terrible team (last season).

Take another kid and let them develop. We have'nt had Goose there for 2 years....i don't believe we need Carroll as insurance for Goose.

Brian...have you heard any rumours about Carroll???

deffinatly agree with you bourky would be very dissapointed if they took gaertner
with any pick dont rate him maybe rookie
how does tighe compare to these types of talls you reckon?

Burgo has changed his top 20 on new info that Freo are definitely going to take Hill. The results on us for some reason taking Tom Lynch (ranga key forward, previously pick 17 in his phantom draft) over Blease (who now falls to Hawthorn at 16)

Just watched some highlights of Lynch and was not impressed, multiple turnovers and poor in play goal shooting. Hard at the ball and a good mark but yeah. Only highlights but I can't see why we'd take him over Blease, who suits our need exactly?

I've come to the opinion that he's guessing at least half his picks from random names drawn out of a hat, mainly because many of his reasonings are along the lines of "well this kid could go top 30 but could also be a rookie so here he is in the 40's & 50's" and no other reasoning besides that. Granted it'd be time consuming to be emphatic on all decisions, but at least some credence I'd have expected instead of randomisation.

Lynch will be a solid player at AFL level, but pick 13? nah, i'll be right thanks.:thumbsu:

I reckon we're keen on him because he can play at either end of the ground

Just because we have youth policy it doesn't mean every single player has to be bottom aged. They also mentioned list management which is where the recruitment of Carroll as a cover for Maguire fits in.

With Freo taking Hill, leaves us in a good position
Leaves us with one of:
Hurley, Yarran, Trengove, Sidebottom, Rich, Hartlett, Ziebell, Vickery, Swift, Johnston

God i hope we don't take Blease or Lynch with our 1st pick. Would top off a wonderful week if we did.

Blease just not convinced with the hype. Lynch will be a good player but better players at 13.

I'd much rather Blease than Trengrove. I reckon I've heard more hype about Trengrove than Blease.

Carroll not out of the contest yet, but neither is he in the door.

D Day Nears for Maybe -Saint Carroll

ST KILDA'S decision not to take West Coast premiership player Ben Cousins has given former Demon Nathan Carroll a chance of playing AFL football next year.
Chief executive Archie Fraser told Thursday's Herald Sun that the club would not have recruited both Carroll and Cousins.
But with the Saints not taking part in the NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft on December 16, Carroll will need to be selected with a late pick in Saturday's NAB AFL Draft.
The 28-year-old has been training with the Saints and could give them some much needed height in defence, with tireless veteran Max Hudghton and Matt Maguire – recovering from a horror run of injuries – no certainties to play every game.
"Nathan Carroll is just going to have to stack up on how he trains and how he fits in with the group," Fraser said.
"If you pick up somebody like a Carroll, you pick him up for specific cover.
"You don't have to be Einstein to say we want him to give us a bit of cover down back.
"But there is still a range of options to look at.
"[Not selecting Cousins] certainly doesn't mean that Nathan is automatically coming. They are two different players for two different positions.
"I think everybody was keen to have a look at Carroll at training.
"It will be an individual decision on Saturday as far as who is in the draft. If we take him, it will have to be on Saturday."
St Kilda powerbrokers met on Tuesday to discuss whether the club should draft Cousins, but decided against it.

Hopefully one of yarran or sidebottom slide to 13.. This is best case scenario.

If not then Blease or Trengove.

with us not getting cousins, and getting carrol i think we should get best available mid with our first pick.
