Following on from posters feedback and the popularity of the Contracts/Trade/Draft catch all thread, it’s been decided to separate each aspect of that megathread into smaller, separate streams.

This will allow more focused discussion on each aspect of list management that will make it easier for posters to find information on and/or add their own views.

There will be four list management threads overall:

• Draftees - for players not yet on an AFL list (this thread)
Trades/FA - for players on other AFL lists that we might want
Contracts - for players on our list that we want to keep, delist or trade
All of the above - the existing thread that will be retained for posts that cover more than one facet, are general shitposting, wanting to discuss previous trades, draft picks etc

The first three, specific threads will be closely moderated to ensure discussion stays on topic whilst the fourth catch all thread will allow posters to be more creative in how they express themselves

With all that in mind, this is the Draftees thread and the following link(s) might be useful:

2025 should see some fruit coming to bear with the NGA and with a Father/Son prospect.

Here are the top Eagles prospects to keep an eye on: -

Charlie Banfield – Claremont 191cm 83 kg
F/S prospect is a mid (best seen so far as outside) who can also play HFF and HBF. He already has a decent tank. Had a solid 2024 Colts year averaging 20 disposals per game and held his own in the U18 carnival.

Steve Malaxos (his PSA coach) thinks he will make it. In 2024, he was year 11 and playing 1st 18 at Scotch and U18 Carnival for the first time. He will build from last year when he was uncertain of where best to play. I see him as a natural wing but will stay open minded as he also looked at home on the flanks. Reads the play well and is neat by both hand and foot plus manages to hit the scoreboard. Shot up a couple of cm this year so now listed at CFC at 191 cm.

Wes Walley jnr – Subiaco 181cm 73kg
NGA and small forward who showed in 2024 that he could more than hold his own. Showed a fair bit in the carnival and managed to keep his focus and stay in the game. Not easy for a small forward but did it well.

Really not sure of his ceiling. There are moments he looks damned tricky and with the right development, he would fit in very well to a more chaos ball game style that the forward line looks to be shaping with Mini. Was included in the AFL academy which and will grow from that, albeit it he seems fortunate to have made the group. He will do better for the opportunity it presents.

Koby Evans – Perth 187cm 82kg
NGA who has shown a load in patches. This guy has speed to burn. I have only seen him live in action once and looking forward to seeing what he can do in 2025. His pace is what will set him apart. Was included in the AFL academy which was a nice touch but seems a little generous given his 2024 production.

Jake Caton – East Perth 185cm 74kg
NGA lock down defender and from all reports, has popped up from not being on my screen to a real possible rookie prospect.

2025 will be his big chance to show something

Tylah Williams – Swan Districts 175cm 67kg
I think he is in the NGA programme but looking to have this confirmed.

Not seen a lot of him so looking for others to add input. As a small forward, and given his size, he will likely be a slow burn. That said, he performed really well in the RMC Preseason testing coming 5th in 20m (2.887 sec) and 2nd in agility test (7.865 sec).

Can we get them all in the draft this year?

ROYAL EAGLE and Keys have been to a number of preseason sessions and have noted some good performances from our prospects and I will leave them to comment.

Current draft picks for 2025
R1 own – likely to be top 5
R1 Hawks – could be low to mid teens
R2 own – likely to be early 20’s pre draft night and prior to FA compo
R2 Hawks – likely to be early 30’s pre draft night and prior to FA compo
R3 Hawks – likely to be in the 50’s

Reality is that the Hawks R2 and 3 picks should hold enough points for us to get all or our F/S and NGA prospects in 2025 (unless one of them shoots up the draft boards and then we just pay fair value with a 10% discount).

2025 DVI and bidding system will be different
1. There will be a 10% discount, previously 20%.
2. Only the first 54 picks will hold value, previously 73 picks meaning over 10,000 points have been removed.
3. Maximum deficit limit set at 1,167 points where as the prior limit was 1,723 points.
4. Once prospects get past pick 40, clubs basically get them with their next pick as the minimum discount of 84 points will kick in.
5. Clubs will be able to trade future picks up to 2 years in advance.

All this means that clubs are not going to be able to hold 6 picks in the 40’s to pick up a top draftee.

2025 is likely to be a year where Northern Academies, NGA and F/S prospects feature heavily.
Here are a few names and Chris Cavanagh from HUN had 10 of his top 25 as being club tied. Here are some names to look out for in 2025
  • Suns prospects include Uwland, Addinsall, White (yet to decide F/S with Demons), Murray and Patterson
  • Lions prospects Annable and likely to be pointy end pick
  • Swans prospects include Carmichael, King and Chamberlain
  • Giants prospects include Wilson and Corrigan
  • Freo prospects NGA Whan and Hart
  • Pies prospect F/S McGuane
  • Cats prospect NGA Rongdit
  • Eagles prospects above mentioned

In looking at the strong draft hands of 2025, Tigers have 2 likely early R1 picks, Suns have 3 x R1 picks, Bombers have 2 x R1 while Eagles have 2 x R1 and 2 x R2.

Suns, Lions and Swans are all likely to be getting multiple top prospects in the draft and a number of these could well be first round picks (some tracking as top 10).

We will know a lot more during the season, but many pundits long range forecasts are that none of the West Coast prospects to be bid on prior to getting our 2 x R1 and at least 1 x R2 picks done.

That means list spots for West Coast will be at a premium so expect some hard list calls again in 2025. Obviously, a trade for The Chad would change our hand.

With so many NGA prospects in 2025, only having 2 spots is a problem.

I'm excited that we'll finally actually get proper access to our NGA talent. And it just happens to coincide with the strongest talent pool becoming available.

But yes, the potential Warner trade throws a (nice to have) spanner in the works.

NGA programmes in WA and SA.
The AFL are concerned about the recent downturn in the number of indigenous players drafted in recent years. Let’s be honest, the NGA rules as to why an indigenous player is in or out of an NGA programme is hardly transparent. Fancy the AFL being like that!

What I believe is that the indigenous young players would benefit from some additional help in becoming elite sportsman and succeeding in the talent pathways. I also believe our code is better when we have a high number of indigenous players.

Take a look at Tyrell Dewar. When we drafted him, he was skinny as, and very much a long shot. He looked about 5 years away from being AFL ready. An AFL professional environment seems a long way from Kalgoorlie but he has toughed it our in a below par WAFL team and started late 2024 showed something in the game at the Cattery.

So how do we get greater indigenous representation in our code? Canberra has proven that a national programme is likely to fail. What works is leaders like Gerard Neesham on the ground working in programmes like that at Clontarf. With the likes of Chance Bateman, West Coast can do great things in this space if we (a) are given the incentive and (b) can utilise our own financial resources.

My proposal is that the CEOs of the 4 teams from WA and SA meet with the AFL. These 4 teams represent the states that have traditionally had a high number of indigenous players playing the game in the junior competitions and these 4 clubs are also the only clubs excluded from the AFL Reserves (the VFL). The proposal is simple. The clubs will fund additional work in the NGA programmes specifically targeted at indigenous talent and the AFL will allow up to 10 category B prospects on the WA and SA teams list (outside of the salary cap).

Not sure about Freo and their Peel alignment, but Port, Crows and Eagles would all benefit from having more players in their SANFL and WAFL teams. We could even agree to let the clubs allow the players to play in another team (example – West Perth reserves or similar) if it best suited the young player.

The draft rules would stay the same in the case that we have a Rioli or Ugle-Hagan type talent. Clubs would have to pay fair value but the 4 clubs could also add high risk options that do not screw up their list and their salary cap (either player or soft cap).

When Auntie Laura goes big saying that they in AFL Headquarters are on to the issue of indigenous participation and that they in at Docklands believe they have the answer, I cringe. It sounds like the normal Canberra crap that gets wheeled out about closing the gap.

These sort of issues need a high level lens but from experience, the work needs to happen at the local and low levels if it has any chance of being a success.

Let me give 2 classic examples of where a indigenous players could have been brought into the system early.

1. Tim Kelly - dot drafted until mid 20's and a Sandover Medal. I believe West Coast looked at him but thought we could wait another year. We then did the Suns deal for the 2017 draft and had planned to take Tim until the Cats cut our grass. If we had of been able to add Tim to our NGA list in 2016, he would probably have been on a list earlier. Similar to Marlion Pickett in that a club could have taken more of a risk if it did not impact the list spots and salary cap.

2. Humphrey Lawson - overlooked in his draft year as he was just not ready for a professional programme and I guess West Coast had Baker and Dewar ahead of him and we only had 2 Cat B spots. If we had more spots on the Cat B for indigenous talent, we could have offered Lawson a spot. He has made it but how many other Lawsons are out there.

Summary - give it to the clubs that can do the work on the ground and let them both fund it and get first dibs on the talent that they nurture. Fat Cats at AFL House have great intentions but a track record of being crap at implementing.

For those interested the above are our the NGA lads plus Charlie Banfield - from L-R

Michael Prior (Manager Game Development)
Darcy Montgomery
Wes Walley
Charlie Banfield
Koby Evans
Jake Caton
Tylah Williams
Chris Brown (Academy Manager)

Now without going all BT, the times I’ve seen the NGA lads when they have trained I hadn’t known exactly who was who until the club posted the above photo

Walley and Banfield I was able to properly identify from the start and later Caton. The other three were a bit of a raffle - Montgomery in particular because I hadn’t even seen his name mentioned previously

For the most part they’ve mainly participated in warmups and ball movement drills but not in any contact/contested work

Banfield is near on a clone of Davis - looks and moves very similar. The same could be said of Walley and Dewar who are particularly difficult to tell apart

Both those lads I expect to see on our list next year unless something goes hideously wrong

Caton is a smokey, moves nicely and has a very good kick

The other three I’ll have to keep an eye on when they train now I know them apart

Darcy Montomery was news to me. I was able to get some input from the 2023 U16 carnival game against Vic Country where he managed to kick goals and get BOG
1739246223627.png

Darcy Montgomery (Subiaco)
Forward | 180cm | 27/04/2007

It was a dominant display from the forward who plays much taller than his 180cm might suggest, clunking a whopping seven marks from 12 disposals and causing all sorts of headaches for the defence. He finished with six goals, including three in the final term to really spearhead the Sandgroper attack. Four of his six goals came from traditional set shots, with his other two coming from general play including one on the run and a soccer off the deck. His leading patterns and ability to pick the space early was what lead to him controlling the airways.

And here is his WAFL stats

thanks for your huge input on all things, must have taken weeks of your time!
Your thoughts on the NGA for indigenous players and the SA, WA idea sounds great and without all the knowledge of exactly how it would work the AFL could use your idea as a pilot project for 3 years to see if it has an impact.
Would probably only give an extra 2 or 3 list spots for those NGA players, 5 would make Vic teams go into meltdown!

Not sure where this belongs but a thought I had. Went to School in South Australia over a decade a go and came across some WA indigenous kids at schools and other boys schools from areas like Halls creek. Some were there for footy and some weren’t. Any reason why they are going over there rather than coming down to Perth. Maybe it haven’t come across any but it doesn’t feel like we get indigenous kids coming from interstate for footy/school

Not having a VFL team is a massive disadvantage to Port, Crows Frockers and us. It is also a major $$$ saving for the AFL. I usually say look to the AFL self interest and either milk it or demand equality. They pay for a proper ressies comp, we keep quiet. Meanwhile, give us additional CAT B list spots.

Had a suggestion to post these in here instead of the other thread.

---

This was Louis' largest goal tally of the season and a very solid all round performance. While most of his goals came from free kicks, he drew them through his work rate and danger level in the forward 50 making his defender panic. I'm not 100% convinced yet with his somewhat awkward kicking technique, but in this game he was a deadeye in front of goal.

Can we get them all in the draft this year?

ROYAL EAGLE and Keys have been to a number of preseason sessions and have noted some good performances from our prospects and I will leave them to comment.
My Favourite watching the preseason is Jake Caton
Was playing back pocket last year for East Perth
At WCE training was used a inside mid in match sim and impressed me a lot
He has composure in tight is good by and hand and right foot his short kicking game is a weapon
uses it so well
He does all the fundamentals well and moves well seems to have time
Really surprised me how much he has come on i spoke to Marco Bello at one training and he said
he was a surprise packet how well he has adjusted to training
So Iam hoping East Perth colts play him as a inside mid and we give him game time there at the championships

Charlie Banfield seems to have a huge tank and is incredibly clean one touch player
Plays half forward wing with little bursts as inside mid
Training as a forward at WCE training
Just needs to increase the amount of footy he gets with Claremont this year is a natural footballer

Wes Walley is mercurial plays like Liam Ryan when going for his marks
Will be a small forward at AFL level
He was the best player in one training session with Mini giving him great encouragement
kicked two sensational goals from outside 50
Need to improve his tank

Kobe Evans it the little things he does that make him stand out like one touch grab of the ground lifted his arms
up accepts hard tackle and hands the footy of beautifully
Has exceptional first 5 metres of pace
Is learning to slow down a touch get in sync then kick last year was constantly sloppy kicks as he was rushing it too much
That has improved this preseason he is work in progress
He is a very good size has rounded shoulders so looks smaller at times than his size is

Tylah Williams is a genuine small forward left footer
Very very good set shot for goal, so is damaging.
Great crumbing of the footy, gets in good positions
Will have interest from other clubs looking for a good crumbing small forward

Darcy Montomery he is 191cm medium forward
Has booming left foot kick
Kicking is very hit and miss its not consistent can be very accurate then next week shocking
Lacks endurance and seems not as committed as the other boys
Get a Lawson Humphries vibe that may not be ready to be drafted this year
but give him a couple more years to improve at wafl level and he may be a mature age recruit

Given the slow burn of these types of prospects our cat b rookie list needs to be 4/5 not 2. I’d compensate other clubs with an additional 2 rookie spots ea to make up the list difference and taking the list numbers back to pre covid

Fully agree on needing more Cat B list spots and I’d also want more time on the list. Perhaps it could be controlled/limited to playing AFL spots versus development

In terms of overall list positions (ie pre Covid 40 senior and 4 Rookie) - problem is that would be an AFL additional cost of $500k multiplied by 5 or 6 for the clubs that are AFL funded. That would mean $3 million and impact AFL bonuses

Just curious , do you by any chance have a role with the academy? You seem to have a lot of handy info about it!

I think Tassie will prefer picking Vic kids more so than WA/Qld's, given the Vics propensity to accept being cold, wet and miserable for most of their lives until retirement, whereon they bail from debtsville to QLD quicker than a fat kid eating a cupcake.

sounds like a great idea if AFL want to increase indigenous players in the system then clubs should certainly have 4 or 5 Cat B list spots would be the easiest way and maybe 4 years on the Cat B list, Dewar was drafted in 2022 and is only hitting his potential now, you also might catch the Lawson Humphries of the world?

Looks like a good young group and potentially 3 could be drafted.
