Another of the early movers in 2025, Grlj has been making the most of his opportunity playing onball for Oakleigh to maximise some of the traits we saw last season. His pace is electric, and he uses it to quickly close down opponents or break lines with the ball, one mazy run in particular which saw him sidestepping opponents and leaving them in his wake was very reminiscent of last season's Chargers number 5. In this game he barely put a foot wrong with ball in hand, his skills neat and precise. Hopefully he can up his disposal count as the season progresses by developing his stoppage work and finding more uncontested footy on the spread.

Thanks noobermensch . Grlj was my preseason pick for the biggest riser, starved of midfield time last year due to FOS, Jagga and Gross. I think his attributes (speed, line breaking) will be particularly appealing for WCE. Him and Lindsay would be my choices for the Hawks 1R pick if we don’t trade it/trade up. Noob’s video on his futures game last year worth a look too for those interested in seeing what he brings to the table, particularly in the first half.

The first of the mid season draft prospects to be covered on the channel this year, Tom Evans had an absolutely immense performance on the weekend for the Pioneers to put himself firmly into the MSD frame. He showed prospective AFL teams what he would bring, which is a prolific rebounding small defender with dash and excellent kicking skills paired with attacking, fearless decision making.

Some nice aggressive kicks, but of Harrison Oliver about him but not as good 1v1. Would like to see him get more hands on the ball further up the ground too. Great video, thanks 👍

Further to this I’m keeping an eye on Tom Evans for the MSD too. Coming off 44 touches for the Pioneers, eaglespremiers may be able to share a bit more info on what he’s like in the flesh, particularly defensive running. He is an early birthday already in an overage year which needs to be considered but a 19 year old that can get their hands on the ball 44 times should absolutely be in our discussion, keep an eye on his midfield minutes.

Fantastic player.
Got penalised last year due to APS football commitments after having a strong end to 2023.
Played mainly on the forward flank and rotating into the midfield in his games with the Pioneers last year.

This year he has moved into the back line and is a key component for the Pioneers forward thrusts.
Key attributes are his football IQ (which is very good) and his navigation through traffic. He is also a reliable kick of the football.
I couldn't speak more highly about Tom as a person and his footballing journey.

So let me go back 5 years to my List by Age by Position post the 2019 draft.

1744789063348.png

I know posters got sick on Monocle and me talking about the Pieman having his schoolboy prefect with great athleticism, but you had to go back to 2013 to find a mid we had drafted that went close to resembling a best 22. This cliff that we have fallen off has been coming for half a decade. As clear as dogs balls.

The draft of 2020 was the second of the Kelly pick losses and we took late swings at Edwards and Trew. The next year of 2021 we started to change and at least took Chesser and Hough who were b9oth seen as genuine mids at the U18 level. Hough more a Half Forward who could run through the middle.

We have to go to 2022 to see us start to address the shortage of an engine room. We took Ginbey, Hewett, Burgiel and Long. Not all are going to make it and not all are going to play midfield. Burgiel has gone and we need to be patient with Noah coming back from a serious knee injury.

2023 saw us draft Harley, Hall and Johnston. Tick. During 2024, we picked up Hutchinson in the MSD.

2024 saw us draft Allan, Gross and Grego. Tick.

I am trying to be positive and believe Massey's focus is clearly on midfielders and he has differing views that The Pieman.

For those looking for a quick sugar hit from our draftees, remember that the Daicos and Reid draftees who can play from day 1 are the exception. The majority of who we pick won't be ready to be hard nosed midfielders until 3 to 5 years later.

Here is how we stand now

The good news is that we have most of our KPP on the list we need for the future (could do with a KPD) and a ruck but probably not from the draft. We need to continue the midfield build and I am truly looking for Gross and Grego developing together as a duo that seem to want to be involved in contested football..

Thats alot of kids with very few leaders on the field...2026, Yeo and Mcgovern will be gone too.

How do we know if he'll make it to Hawthorn's 1R? For all we know, he could be this year's Caleb Windsor.

Surely we don’t need a footnote in every post that projects draft positions 7 months out from the actual draft are subject to change over the course of the season depending on form? The Hawks 1R pick will also change over that period.
