It’s all a rort.

They haven’t done anything to make him afl quality but get him because? The system is broken
100% I thought they actually had to have the player in their system for a while but my little knowledge and a quick search it looks like their is no minimum time NGA's need to spend at a club to eligible??
Open to all players 11-18yo?
If that's the scenario its broken and WC should scoop up all the best talent and stamp NGA players!!

Surely a straight no but the afl like changing rules on the run.

AFL didn’t allow North to add Sanders pre draft a couple of years ago but that’s when they had to get to pick 40.

Eligibility

  • Players aged between 11-18 years (Born 2006-2013)
  • Players must be registered with the Naitanui Academy by their 15th year, to be eligible for any draft concessions through the AFL NGA Program
  • African/Asian – where a player or parent is born in an African or Asian country
  • Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) – where a player or both parents are born in a non-English speaking country
  • Indigenous – where a player identifies as indigenous

and that's how it should be!
Based on our clubs NGA criteria it should be a straight NO!

Yeah looks like we tried to do the same thing and got a no. (Didn’t matter as he didn’t make it past pick 20).

ERASMUS IN OPEN POOL

MIDFIELD talent Neil Erasmus won't have ties to any club in this year's NAB AFL Draft after West Coast's bid to add him to its Next Generation Academy failed.

Erasmus, who comes from South African descent and plays for Subiaco in the WAFL in the Eagles' NGA zone, was a talented junior cricketer but set his sights on an AFL career after West Coast's involvement in bringing him to the football talent pathway.

However, the Eagles have not been able to list him as a member of their Next Generation Academy after an AFL ruling.

It is highly unlikely West Coast would have had access to Erasmus even if he was a late addition to its NGA program due to the new rules allowing clubs to match NGA bids only after pick 20.

thanks for your info.
Really good time for more WC NGA/FS players starting to come though with Tassie compromised draft coming up.
WC have potentially have 2 or 3 good prospects in 2025 with C Banfield, W Walley, J Caton, K Evans.

2026 G Kenh, L McGlade, N Braun, R Farmer, Harper Banfield(pretty sure 2026?).
Koby Lecras not NGA or FS but nephew of mark in 2026 who looks a decent prospect.

Not sure what is coming behind in 2027 but our NGA is putting up some more numbers it seems that are AFL draftable talents?

No, the AFL DID let North list Sanders, the only reason they didn’t get him is because he was inside the top 40 which in 2023 clubs couldn’t match a bid.
Yeah from memory they asked for special access to him inside the top 40 which the AFL knocked back

True I forgot that bit
I’ve got no problem with kids being added whenever, but there needs to be a long history of investment in the development of the kid that’s got them into a position to be draftable to an AFL list. Late cherry picking because they fit an ancestral and geographical profile is bullshit.

If the Hawks have been investing in Greeves and his development for 5+ years and can demonstrate that without that investment the player was unlikely to be drafted then I think there is merit to it, otherwise it shouldn’t even be a consideration.

agree, what Elite Pete posted about having to nominate by their 15th year and other criteria of backgrounds should be the minimum standard, no ifs or buts.

The Hawks might get a win here sure.

If any club would want this stupid system to stay in place, you've highlighted why it would be your club.

Might be time to start to think about ripping the band aid off the draft which has been a joke of late anyway. Just move all clubs to zones and each run their own academies.

It would encourage the VFL to get rid of a few teams out of Melbourne as they fight over zones and players. That’s a win win right there.

It would encourage the northern states to invest heavily in the zones which would be a good thing as the AFL is determined to develop these markets.

I absolutely agree with you that it warrants a discussion. Perhaps a non-compromised first round only to help the bottom clubs then the rest of the pool is just zoned. Salary cap will help sort out the distribution of talent as they mature.

Nice to think that we get back to zones but we should do the AFL Best Interests Test.

Would it help the Northern Academies? Not really as they already have the benefit and it makes the rest on a more even keel. The 4 Northern get to participate in both mechanisms.

Would it wean the tin rattling Vic clubs off financial help (Norf, St Blunders, Doggies, Dees)? I suggest that these clubs are just not popular. The big clubs in Melbourne or Pies, Blues, Tigers and Bombers will still be monster the tin rattlers. Any attempt to interfere with the VaFL is not in the AFL's best interest.

Cats are already there so they are ahead of the game. They seem to attract the main share of Vic Country players wanting to come home for lifestyle reasons.

What about poor old Tasmania? I cannot see 42 Tassie players in the AFL now. They would need help.

I like the concept of zones but that is because I think the 2 WA clubs would do well. Again - not a KPI for the VaFL

Agreed Eagles and Freo should benefit well from NGA and if you’re talking NGA alone probably the best out of all 18 clubs. But still have to play by the rules and invest and not just cherry pick someone becomes good.

It’s on the Hawks why they didn’t have him in the system. Just like it was on the Eagles on not having Erasmus in theirs.

What about if they were conceived in Bali after a few Bintangs... Is that Asian enough

Sliding doors moment - imagine if GWS had access to Brander (but the AFL said no). We may have taken Allen with that pick and possibly Tim Kelly at the pick after
GWS picked him up after we delisted him and then after 1 year the also delisted him. How on earth did we pick someone as useless as him ?

Sounds like someone was asleep at the wheel

Picking up the CHF from the AA Side in the carnival may give you a clue.

Not always a certainty - but at the time it did not look like a bad pick. Other talls that have made it in AFL included Sam Taylor, Naughton, Oscar and Harrison Petty.
