The Hawks might get a win here sure.

If any club would want this stupid system to stay in place, you've highlighted why it would be your club.
WCE has put a shit ton of resources in there academy to make it happen though
No other club in the league is doing close to WCE in this area

Serious question.
Is that a biased opinion or in comparison to other clubs?
Can you point out the KPI’s on how WC are out performing other clubs?
I’d genuinely like to know why you think that.

Sounds like someone was asleep at the wheel

Picking up the CHF from the AA Side in the carnival may give you a clue.

Not always a certainty - but at the time it did not look like a bad pick. Other talls that have made it in AFL included Sam Taylor, Naughton, Oscar and Harrison Petty.
A truly horrendous squad.

True but if you did an AA U18 team from that cohort now, it would be very strong

FB Starcevich Petty Balta
HB Richards Taylor Powell
C Farrell LDU Cerra
HF Rayner Naughton Bailey
FF Daniels Allen D Fogarty

Foll TDK Brayshaw Worpel

Int Spargo MacCartin Murphy Petch Ballard Miers Moore Meek

There were some real busts in the first round of 2017. We got a dud in Brander but Dow, O’Brien, Hunter, Coffield, Bonar and Ling to name a few were busts

The second round was really good. Oscar, Balta, Ryan, Daniels, Taylor, Spargo, De Kooning, Fritsch, McCartin and Petty. I am ignoring the overage draftees

Just get everyone to identify as indigenous, how could the AFL dispute it without looking like colonialist oppressors?
It has started. Stuart Cochran who played for the Power wants his boys in the academy. Believes recent discovery in the family tree of his apparent Aboriginal lineage.

Just so happens Stuart’s 2nd son is one of the early favourites to be the number 1 pick of the 2026 draft.

Wonder if he would have bothered if they werent decent footballers?

Doug is a fantastic player, if we miss out on Cody this year I’d be targeting him with our R1 pick next year but it would have to be a top 3 pick. Needs to grow a couple of cms and has an eye to the midfield like D Curtin.

Agreed Eagles and Freo should benefit well from NGA and if you’re talking NGA alone probably the best out of all 18 clubs. But still have to play by the rules and invest and not just cherry pick someone becomes good.

It’s on the Hawks why they didn’t have him in the system. Just like it was on the Eagles on not having Erasmus in theirs.
I get your point. If the AFL ticks off on it then it by definition is in the rules though.

If.

He has trained with the Hawks a bit but yes, it seems cynical. My guess is that, like Sanders, he was never going to fall outside the top 40 picks so applying was irrelevant.... Just a guess though

isn’t the point of being able to match is because your team put in so much development, resources and time into the player that helped achieve get this player get drafted.

Agreed the way the afl have swapped and changed the rules haven’t been easy for the teams to follow but also teams would know how a player rates at u16 doesn’t mean they will rate that high in their draft year so you probably just don’t wash your hands of them.

But the afl like to bend rules like they have this week and last year with Kako ect. So who knows but they normally bend in favour of clubs.

WCE financial reports show we spend more money here than other clubs
BHP help also with sponsorship and to lesser extent Mineral resources

Waalitj Foundation also works with these boys in Waalitj boys program,
and eagle eye and eagle insight and rise above programs that are slightly different to the standard programs
that work with the NGA boys
Its about getting them to complete secondary school so they get there certificate and later help find employment
It not just about being drafted

WCE have these youth engagement fulltime workers, working in the regions helping identify talent from age 11 and getting them signed to the academy
Then there is the academy staff and there volunteers as well
WCE each year have a much larger list of boys that are available to be drafted as a NGA than other clubs but most of those boys are never going to be drafted, but the academy is not just about getting drafted its about getting these kids ready for life

thanks ROYAL EAGLE for your investigative work!
WC do spend massive resources on NGA programs and its a credit to them for the amount of kids that go through all of the mentioned programs, I have seen lists of around 100 14-18yo kids taking part in NGA programs and while many never get on an AFL list many of those kids thrive with the help offered at the NGA.
Rough count there has been about 10 AFL listed players come through the NGA and around 20 playing WAFL without others spread around the country!

There’s no way Fogarty gets a spot ahead of Dylan Moore. Would be tempted to replace Petty with Ballard/McCartin too.

CTL fixture is out for those interested.

Josh Lindsay (Geelong Falcons), and Sam Grlj (Oakleigh Chargers) are the players I’m particularly interested in for our list along with local Colts talents Fred Rodriguez and Cody Curtin. SA U18 prospect Sam Cumming I’m also tipping for a massive year.

Oliver Greeves (Eastern Rangers) is another who looks a good fit if Hawthorn aren’t successful in adding him to their NGA program.

And then we take him with their pick

Season 3 Laughing GIF by The Simpsons

if they aren't picked until round 3 then they aren't rated by the other 17 teams

There's a lot of good players taken later in the draft - some outstanding, many good role players.

Cox (R), McGovern (R), Waterman (77), Schofield (50), Rioli (51), Hutchings (60), Priddis (R), Q.Lynch (R), Embley (57), Fletcher (R), Braun (53).

Include the 30s, and you've got a bucket load more.

Sure, the hit rate isn't as high, but it's not zero either.

Our 1R and late picks (4R+/rookie) have been very good over the journey. It’s the 2R and 3R that we’ve been absolutely terrible and I think some recent selections in that zone will continue that pattern.

Thanks to the SANFL U18s comp kicking off earlier than everyone else we have new draft prospect footage from season 2025 to check out, starting with one of SA's best Sam Cumming. He showed signs of rust here with his typically excellent kicking skills letting him down a little and the connection piece with his leading forwards not quite being there, but there was plenty to like as well. He looks to have added plenty of muscle to his frame over the preseason and showed some power inside the contest. If he can emerge as a balanced inside/outside midfield threat in his top age year he could push his case as a top 10 fancy.

Thanks mate much appreciated. Biggest draft riser this year IMO and should absolutely be a target for us when we inevitably split pick 1.

Josh Reichelt turned in a best on ground performance for Centrals to get his 2025 top age season off to a flier. He played predominantly as a rebounding defender with a few stints on ball, finding a stack of the footy and combining outside run with poise and a classy right boot to consistently launch attacks for his team.

A little pump up of our NGA Evans at the end.

Also a long way out but Freddy sounds a perfect need along with Sharp. If they project as expected a spoon and walking a club skipper won’t be so bad…..
