  1. Never trade with a cross town rival
  2. Never trade a number 1 pick
  3. Never trade a number 2 pick
  4. Consider trading a number 3 pick and then don't do it
  5. Know where your list is at all times in terms of development
  6. Draft best possible
  7. If all things are equal draft the non-________/better person
  8. Still a tie draft for position
  9. Draft for footy attributes first and athletic prowess second
  10. If you ignore rules 6-8 do it only from round 3 of the draft
  11. if you are going to screw around and experiment do it with Round 4 of the draft +
  12. At least one of your rookies should be a young as possible freak or able to do something freaky (if desperate just draft a freaky name)

Every club seems reluctant to follow rule 9 for some reason. I agree, we have seen our share of "athletes" who couldn't cut it as footballers. Bandy, Fedemma, D.Parker spring to mind. Maybe a little harsh on Bandy but never really did make it despite playing alot of footy.

Disagree with 1 and 6. If its a good trade it's a good trade, regardless of which club it's with. And if we draft another 190cm flanker/utility early in this years draft I'll be disappointed.

Love the list, but agree with Dom on the flanker thing.

Some suggestions:
13. Go local when the option is available.
14. Always add at least one EF/SF player to the list per year.
on reflection maybe 14 is too binding, but you get the general idea.

#9 is the only rule that needs to be adhered too. too often clubs are chasing
athletes who can kick a ball but aren't ball magnets ie sam mitchell.

Don't really understand the game.

Draft ball magnets who can run!!

?????????????

Mitchell was drafted by Hawthorn knowing he wasn't an athlete but that he was a monster ball magnet...

I read something a few years ago, I think it was in an interview with Chris Connolly but not sure. It said that in the draft, Western Australians are given greater priority because they don't have to move away, followed by guys from country areas interstate because they seem to be more mature and capable of adjusting to living in another state. Then I think he might have said they rated guys from Adelaide/Brisbane/Sydney above guys from Melbourne but not totally sure. Anyway, he effectively said that city boys are sissys.

I totally agree, the chicken would have felt something not right and then gone all kung foo chicken on his ass. But then again, once a rabbit gets 'in the mood' you try telling him that your only a chicken and that he should go somewhere else. If you don't beleive me, i have a picture for you
