I have a question.
With the GC being able to pick up an uncontracted player from a club (max 1 per club). When the compensatory draft pick is allocated, does this draft pick come from the GC allocation or do the AFL allocate the compensatory draft pick from themselves?
(sounds a bit double dutch, but I hope you can get the gist of what I'm asking)
im fairly sure its the AFL who compensates. the Gold Coast either use their picks or trade them for contracted players.

i sure hope so, with no standout keyfowards after butcher, a midfielder with skills is our next major need.

if we win 4 or less, then a tall foward and an indigenous foward with picks 19 & 21.
at 19 and 21 there is still a bit of talent around. so best availible. we dont want to pick someone the would go in the 40s because we need to adress a need.

Keeping an eye on a former teammate of Post: Kyle Hartigan. Would be quite happy if we could pick him up with a second round pick. Would add some real size to our backline.

No doubt we need another KPP for the backline with some height to add to Post 194cm, Rance 193cm. We need backup incase one of those two don't make it.

We need 1-2 more quality outside midfielders so we should get 'best avaliable' with our first pick which will probably be a mid. Use the rest of on 2 KPF's and another backman for backup as you said RT.

My ideal for this draft would be:

2 mids
2 KPF's
1 KPD

For the rest it's really lucky dip and take what's left.

Quality wise we are deficient in every position, structurally we are ok. Need to upgrade on what we have. Need to focus on dire needs first.

Most dire need is tall forwards. Schulz, Hughes, Pattison are duds with Riewoldt and Gourdis still developing and Richardson on his last legs. I'd delist all the duds and retire cho. That leaves 1 senior listed and 1 rookie listed player. I'd then take 2 key forwards in the national draft and 2 in the rookie draft minimum. I'd look to rotate Putt and Vickery during the 2010 season to get match experience into them without having to throw them into the ruck too much.

If our first pick goes to a ball winning midfielder with excellent disposal skills then that would be meeting our second most dire need.

I'd look to take another big bodied key defender, move one of McGuane/Thursfield on for a draft pick and also take a rookie key defender. Delist Silvestor. Move Moore onto the HBF.

Ruckman I'd delist Simmonds and Pattison, upgrade Browne and take another rookie ruckman.

We are still missing that elusive tough small defender with good kicking skills also and need more crumbing forwards.

In fact we are generally missing good kicks of the football it our most dire need really. Drafting rules should state that if the player is not a good kick of the football then we don't take them. We simply can't afford any more poor kicks of the footy.

what we should be looking for at this point is a small back, tall forward and a forward with defensive presure to add to nahas. get a mid with our first pick. unless there is someone better.

With a tall forward, it takes the pressure off our midfielders to kick with perfection. Let them bomb into the fifty once in a while, with the tall forward in there and Nahas crumming, a goal every now and then is all we need. It'll give confidence to our midfielders. Then they can slowly but surely learn what works and what doesn't and improve. I think the reason our midfield is struggling is because of lack of confidence and therefore lack of fight. Sometimes i feel like Deledio doesn't want the ball. Simmonds never looks like he cares. But we need a new backman who can create run. A little like Bowden (once did)

yeah good call:thumbsu:

im sick of the club going for players based on a particuluar position, best available is what has worked for the succesful clubs.

will he be around at pick 20 or so?

i could see him going around 15, but i may be wrong, might not be as good as i think he is.
Have not had a chance to see him play yet, but from what I have read and seeing him on Hutchy's Future stars show, he really sounds and looks the part. Seems to be around the 195cm mark and about 88-90 kgs. Will no doubt have a clearer idea about his prospects after the Championships when he can be assessed against other KPDs.

Here is a little write up about him from my local paper from Jets coach Steve Kretiuk:

Hartigan made a name for himself in 2008 at centre-half-back for the Jets and has again stood out this year, earning Kretiuk’s praise.

It’s hard at this level to find really competitive kids who really hate getting beaten ... Kyle’s one of them. He hates getting beaten. If he’s caught behind he’ll really spoil with a bit of aggression.

“What I like is he plays with a fair bit of aggression and it really stands out.
He’s by far our best defender down there.”

I really like the highlighted bit.

why dont we draft more kids with this type of additude?
Imagine Hartigan at CHB with Rance off a HBF and McGuane playing at FB. Would really stiffen up the backline IMO.

If Melbourne do end up getting picks 1-2 Richmond should aim for:

3. Morabito: He is an elite mid from WA, with a big body and elite kicking skills. Also has the ability to shake off a tackle like Cotchin and has pace.

19. Colyer: Another WA mid/HFF, has very clean hands and a elusive pace. Also has an elite kick and plays with plenty of energy.

21. Kennedy: A HFF/KPF, has electric pace for someone at his height and also a huge leap. Has been likened to a Steve Johnson type but taller. Plays for the Eastern Ranges.

That's what I would do, this would add more elite mids and a bigger forward.

FWIW before we start talking about who we should draft we need to ensure we have the right people in the position of selecting the players in the first place.

Most people agree that Francis Jackson is a massive improvement on his predecessor but having one good talent scout is nowhere near enough.

Older BF bloggers would remember Weaver. He was a Richmond mod and had a great knowledge of junior footy putting up his annual mock draft. If memory serves me correctly he is scouting for a club now. If its not us, why not he is a Tiger man.

With all the talk of players to draft Jake Melksham is one not to forget from the Calder Cannons will be a first round choice this year IMO.
hmm is francis as good as most supporters believe. personally i have grave fears about him. 2005 jon 8 hughes 24 casserly 40. sort of says it all. go into 06 edwards 26 skinny terrible kick of the ball. based on strengths and weakness im already calling him terrible decision.peterson already gone. polak a terribly deficient tall who failed at his previous club yet jackson must have had a say. connors skilled but slow and with attitude.cant be bothered doing the others but it seems jackson is just as proficient at selecting deficient players as his predecessors. even more worrying is craig cameron his recruiting record is very poor.

its no good looking at just this yr ask where will the list be at in 3 yrs time this is the minimum lenght down the track we are recruiting for this yr.

a scenario close to worst case in three yrs time this is the list or whats left of current players. and this is assuming the kids we have get better.

collins will he make it in 3yrs no guarantee.
connors diitto have concerns
cotchin if we dont lose him to the gold coast hes one of few whos a definate
coughlan being optimistic here he could be gone at yrs end.
deledio
foley
graham who knows i have my doubts.
hislop pace no cert.
jackson borderline no more than a core player if he survives.
mcguane borderline poor kick and undersized not a smart player either.
moore
morton
newman
post who knows
putt who knows
rance
riewoldt
thursfield
vickery
browne gourdis nahas. who knows

i could probably cut 4 of these. thats 22 players who may be there in 2012.

that means theres 24 spots on the list to be filled where do you begin right across the board the list is deficient long term except maybe in the ruck dept.

okay rucks need 4 to 5 we have 4 possibly need one more vickery, graham. putt, browne.

kpfs/tall forwards. need 6 we have just 2 maybe 3. 3 or 4 are needed. post riewoldt gourdis are it.
i fully expect all of richo polak schulz pattison and hughes to be gone by 2012 either geriatric or a list clogger the lot of them.

kpds/ tall backs. need 6 we have just 3 thursfield mcguane rance. we need 3 more.

hmm have to go if people like will finish this later.

I reckon there is a bit of a gap between the first two players (Scully and Butcher) and the third best player.

So saying we finish in third position, would we ever consider swapping one of our players + our pick, for Melbourne's second pick.

Eg. Pick 3 + Daniel Connors to Melbourne and we get pick 2.

Thoughts?

i doubt melbourne or anyone would want connors, he is too slow, lacking stamina and will probably be delisted.

Would never happen.

I know you have already been lambasted for this suggestion, but please tell me why on earth Melbourne would do this.

They wouldn't. I was just using it as an example of any player I could think of at the top of my head. Connors has potential but yeah it has already been said that he is lazy.

But I think people understand where I am coming from with the pick upgrade selection.

there is still along time untill the draft, players can improve.

melbourne would want a proven player not someone that might become a gun.
