The AFL has released its draw for 2001.

Some Interesting points to note.

Geelong play Essendon again at Colonial Stadium. This time it is Essendon's home game. When will the AFL ever learn. This game is Round 15. There are going to be a lot of problems if Geelong are near the top of the ladder.

Geelong has a HOME game against Melbourne at the MCG!!!

The Kangaroos finally have to play at Geelong in round 4. About bloody time!

Geelong only has 2 games after round 12 at home.

To find the draw look on the AFL website.

What do you think of your own teams draw. Good, bad or average?

The Swans draw looks pretty god

Round 1 Home game against Adelaide is a nice way to start the season

Our home and away games are spread much more evenly throughout the season.

The teams we would like to establish traditional rivalries with are rostered to play twice (namely Melbourne, Kanagroos, Brisbane)

and, best of all : Carlton will be playing at the SCG for the first time since 1997. God I can't wait already. We thrashed the Blus Scum up here in 97 - lets do it again and really stick it up 'em.

I like the look of the Lions Draw as well, much better than the last 2 years.

And the crowd getter will more than likely be the first game of the season to be played at the Gabba.

Rnd 2 - v North. It is the first time in a couple of years they will play up here. Seeing as the North games traditionally seem to have the most number of supporters travelling from Bris to Melb to watch it, I can see it as being very close to a sellout at the Gabba.

Arch & DonsRtops, we have to wait until the 2nd last round to see the boys play here, looks like I'll be going to Melb for Anzac day again, can't wait that long to see them play.

Jeeezus....they couldn't have made it a harder start for North, could they? Essendon at the G, Briswhine at the Gabba, Sydney at the SCG, Geelong at Kardinia Park, and then Adelaide at Football Park. Why didn't they chuck in West Coast in Perth as well?

Anyway, Arch and Sandie, c'mon....make the trek over for round 1. You know you want to!

Ok

After a quick look I can see

1. Only 2 games at the MCG again
2. We travel to Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Tassie & cop the blues at optus & the Dons at Colonic. At least we miss out on Cat Park this year.
3. Not to be TOO pessemistic but Sydney in Sydney, Melbourne at home, Port (always even money games), Blues at Optus, Kangas at home & Hawks at York(HUH). Based on the form shown last year we could easily be zip & 6. Watch out Gary, Neil Craig WILL be breathing down your neck.

I think it is also the first time since 1992 or 93 that Geelong and Brisbane play twice in the same season. Apart from 6 i/state trips, i'm happy with GFC's 00 draw, we only play Essenscum once, and we have a beauty of a game in rnd 22 at Optus Oval vs Caarrrlton. Top 4 finish looks likely for Geelong next year, barring injuries and poor form of course. talent wise we're under essendon of course, but after that i believe we can mix it with any other club in the comp

I like the pies draw! Seems Alrigth!
But i think we have to many Nite games 10 of them. We play interstate only 4 times which is also good!

Plus while looking at the draw i see stadium australia wont be used next year! does anyone know y this is i thougth they would

OK - Stadium Australia - a couple of points from a local :

- Don't be surprised to see No games at Stadium OZ next yera.

- The 'agreement' between StadOz and the AFL is an 'in prnciple' agreement only and was signed rather hastily at the end of 1998.

- StadOz and the AFL are still negotiating to have the Stadium re-configured for Aussie Rules. There are no dates fixed, no contractors engaged, or indeed plans drawn up.

- The Swans (and the Kangaroos) now have some pretty serious reservations about playing there (even good crowds look tiny in this huge stadium).

- Most Swans members live too far away from the ground to be really interested in attending.

- I have just received my membership application for the Swans 2001. All 13 games are scheduled for the SCG, the club has admitted they are not sure about the StadiumOz arrangement for next year.

- According to todays RealFooty.com, the Stadium will not be ready for another 18 months (at least)

So don't worry about StadOz just yet - continue to enjoy the comfort, great viewing and sensational atomsphere of the SCG for Season 2001

cheers

Thank you once again... Collins must still have a say... Freo on a sunday in the middle of winter as usual... 8000 if we are lucky...

A shocker in terms of difficulty:

Play twice:

Essendon

Kangaroos
Brisbane
Bulldogs
West Coast
Collingwood

Play once:

St Kilda
Port Adelaide
Adelaide
Fremantle
Carlton
Sydney
Geelong
Hawthorn

Run home is terrible ...

Sorry to supporters from non-Victorian teams but in terms of Victorian teams I am pretty disappointed that we have the maximum quota of 6 interstate games AGAIN.

Why we have to play more games interstate than clubs like Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs who are volunteering to play games interstate is absolutely beyond me.

In a draw that is supposed to even itself up over a period time, why is it that we have not played Fremantle in Melbourne since 1997.

We play 4 teams from the top 8 but having said that, we do avoid playing some of the teams that I would consider the better teams.

And 7 of our home games are against Victorian teams including some of the higher drawing clubs such as Richmond, Essendon and Carlton.

Round 5 against Carlton at Optus Oval and Round 15 against Adelaide will be interesting.

4 intersate trips is about average.

If you work on the assumption that you play 3 interstae teams twices (3 guaranteed away games) and 3 intersate teams once.

Of the three you pay once, half of them should be "away" and half should be "home"

So, the "average" Victorian club should play 4.5 interstae games.

We play 4, which is about right.

And to the Adelaide supoorter who said Essendon rarely visit Football Park to play the Crows : We palyed the Crows at Football park in 1996,97,98,99. So, I don't know whhere you are getting your facts there !!!

Hey, all I know is that I am glad to get the extra game at the gabba next year. 3 out of the first 4 away is better than this years 5 out of the first 6, and they have managed to keep to the merger terms with 6 Victorian games.

It is also the first time since AFL started at the Gabba in 1993, that Collingwood have not played up here.

11 Home games + 1 Away game at the Gabba
6 Games in Victoria
1 Game in Sydney
2 in Perth
1 in Adelaide

Not too bad I think compared to previous years.

Comon Sainter

Dont forget teams like adelaide, port, sydney, brisban, eagles, dockers all have to play 11 interstate games

And dont tell me there is no such thing as home ground advantage, there certainly is when its say for example freo vs collingwood in melbourne

Sure dockers have it reversed in their home games but if melb based clubs only travel interstate 4 times then that leaves 18 games in their home state in which the supporters have the opportunity to attend
Crowd support makes a huge difference!

During the eagles glory days ie early 1990's they had a team that could have nearly matched today's essendon.Main difference is they used to have to play after long plane trips and with mininmal crowd support.

Sabre_ac,

I think I specified very clearly that I was talking about as compared to Victorian teams.

I realise that home ground advantage does indeed result in a significant advantage to the home team.

Just go back over a five or ten year period and compare the amount of matches some Victorian teams have had compared to others.

On the other hand, it does result in increased exposure for the team and sponsors and our interstate supporter groups are always accomodated nicely.

I probably should say that I am not too disappointed with our draw overall and most clubs seem relatively happy which is good.

Certain things just annoy me and this is one of them.

And gocatsgo,

Do you know the last year that St Kilda has not played at Kardinia Park/Shell Stadium?

It seems like clubs such as St Kilda and to a lesser extent Melbourne along with the interstate clubs are the only ones sent down there.

Having said that, I don't really mind heading down there for our annual match because it is as close as I get to seeing an interstate match and I love the atmosphere. (Perhaps an Essendon vs St Kilda match at the MCG is similar)

I just read on the AFL site something I didn't pick up yesterday.

Adelaide have 13 NIGHT GAMES.

A Maggie supporter wrote earlier on this topic that they thought their 10 night games were too many.

I guess I better buy an overcoat.

4.5 interstate trips a year is average. CRAP!

Essendon had 3 last season and 4 next season. That gives them an average of 3.5 a year.

Geelong and StKilda have both played 17 games interstate in the last 3 years and both play 6 again next year. Thats 23 in 4 years. It's absolute crap, compared to the other Victorian clubs.

Geelong also have to go overseas in the Ansett Cup.

Hawthorn averaged 6 games interstate for the alst 3 seasons aswell.

They will not know themselves next year with only 3 interstate trips and a day excursion to Tassie to whip the Crows ass!!

Gocatsgo,

We had 4 interstate trips in 2000, and 4 in 2001 coming up. We also had 4 in 1999. Get your facts right. (No offence)

That's an average of 4, for the last 3 years. We also had 6 in 1997. Yes, 6.

Jod23,

4.5 games (on average) interstate is fair for the Victorian teams, because we don't have a home ground advantage. Let's look at 2000.

West Coast had 10 advantageous games, 10 disadvantageous games, and 2 neutral (agaisnt freo)

Essendon had 4 advantageous games only. (this was when we played a non-Victorian club in melbourne). We had 4 disadvantageous games (when we travelled), and 14 neutral games.

So, as you can see, West Coast's advantageous games equal their disadvantageous games. Same with Essendon.
