Why did it take them so long to play a test in Melbourne?

(It's 12 years since the SOO was first played here.)
Who know's.

The past few Test matches played in Melbourne against Great Britain sold out both Olympic Park (when it held more than 20k) and Optus Oval.

Then we had SOO arrive here, then the Super League War started and the focus shiffed. It least they have got it back on track and this year along with the extra funding we get SOO 3 and the Test match. While I doubt we'll sell it out , we'll get close to 40k if the ARL are lucky and promote promote promote

Melbourne sporting event rule 1: Big public events go to the MCG.
I went to Telstra Dome for the first time to watch one of the one dayers bewteen Aus and SA earlier this year.

It was crap atmosphere to be honest, although the crowd was only 23,000 odd.

Its probably a better oval to view rectangle sports from though then the MCG.

SOO is confirmed for the MCG in 2009.
That soon, huh? ;)

Anyway, I think they'd find test matches get a better reception in Melbourne than SOO ever could. They should leave the origin up north and move the mid-year trans Tasman test down here (would have to shift it from Anzac day though).

it's always played on the friday night of the anzac long weekend, not necessarily anzac day itself.
it's never going to be moved from there because it has become a tradition, hence being called the 'anzac test'.
