mianfei,

Many thanks, great stats and nicely presented - easy to understand :D

So my next questions...

How many draws have there been in V/AFL history against total number of games played. ie what is the % chances of a draw occurring in each season.

Then: What is longest span in V/AFL history with no draws in terms of seasons and games.

TIA
Muzz

I think 'Mianfei' has posted some information on 'droughts' of draws.
A seach or browse through his postings should find what you are looking for.

Some stuff on frequency of draws here

The longest span without a draw in the V/AFL is 470 games from Round 2, 1982 to the first half of Round 11, 1985.I recall the end of it quite well because I was listening to the game that ended the sequence. (AsI have tried very hard to emphasise, this is by no means a record for all senior football - see above post).

On the google news archive I found a link which appeared to reference a VFA grand final or final that was drawn twice in a row around 1911 involving North Melbourne.

Not sure what level it was - but the unfortunately the link didn't work.

Does anyone have any info on this?

It was a senior VFA first semi-final in 1912 between North Melbourne and Brunswick that was drawn twice.

You can look here for a description of the second draw, played on the seventh of September 1912. As done on Google News Archive, the second draw is on the sixth page of the eight.

In a related story is it just me or is Google News Archive basically unsupported these days? I was expecting it to kick onto massive things with search by date features and enhanced keywords and it's done nothing in a year.

The National Library archive of The Argus is killer but sadly if you want anything post 1954 then you're SOL.

Advanced search allows you to search by date plus:

with all of the words
with the exact phrase
with at least one of the words
without
the words

or do you mean something else?

Note than when you select "Browse this newspaper" you'll notice that some editions are missing which is why searches turn up blanks.

The NLA should have 1955 Argus stuff next year as the next copyright expiry date clicks over on January 1st.

The Argus was wound up early in 1957, so not much remains to be published. How good would it be to have access to archives of The Sporting Globe?

What I want on Google Archive is a way to say "I want to see the paper from August 15, 1979" I know you can search for dates and often turn up what you're looking for but it's a bit clunky.

And Google News Archive doesn't have anything from The Age post about 1990 either.

The whole archive? Still there for me:

http://news.google.com.au/archivesearch/advanced_search?ned=au&hl=en

They've just changed it around a bit.

Type in "The Age" for news source, click "Return articles added to Google News Archive" and fire away. When you get to the results page, look on the left-hand side for the Archives header, click 'custom range' and enter away.

Looks like there's not much post-1990 still, but the 80s and earlier should still be there. I was getting 70s results and such just now when I used it.

That is far ahead of anything I have seen in major senior football competitions! Most likely it is a large-scale record.

I recall reading in The Age of a draw with scores of 131 each in the VFA in 1983 and the previous draw in that competition from early 1981 (Second Division) may have been slightly higher, but I never seen a score equal to or above 140.

Essendon v Carlton, Round 2 1993.

20.12 (132) v 19.18 (132)

That must be pretty close to the highest scoring draw in VFL/AFL history?

I was curious as to which teams had gone the longest without playing a draw against each other, and found that Geelong has never played a draw against either St Kilda or South Melbourne/Sydney Swans since the inception of the league in 1897.

Taking into account teams that have actually drawn games, the last time scores were level at the final siren of a Collingwood vs. Richmond game was in 1917.

I noticed in earlier posts the mention of the long draw droughts by WAFL clubs, and it is quite incredible the lack of draws in this competition. At the time of posting, the East Fremantle Sharks have not drawn since 1989, the South Fremantle Bulldogs not since 1997, Peel Thunder have never played a tie since their inception in 1997 and the Subiaco Lions last drew in 2001. In the 1950s, there was just 1 drawn WAFL match (1957), with only two draws in the 1990s (1993 & 1997). At the other end of the scale, the West Perth Falcons drew an amazing 3 times in 1960, which must have given the red and blues steady nerves under pressure, enabling them to win the 1960 WAFL premiership with a comfortable victory over the East Perth Royals.

Stats from the draw between Gold Coast and West Coast tonight.

- First draw in Gold Coast's history.

- 6th draw in West Coast's history, and their first draw since 2003, ending a 12 year draw drought.

- Geelong now have the second longest draw drought with their last draw coming in Round 21, 2006 against Melbourne.

Fr/SS (1 game)
RI/PA (3 games)
GWS/Syd
Mel/STK
Col/Hawks (10 games!)
Br/NM (5 games)
WB/Gee? or both drew with other teams

Thanks for the update on the most recent draw for each club RTB.

Looking at the list, I note that St.Kilda was involved in 3 draws in its 12 games from Round 17 in 2010 to Round 2 in 2011 (it also had a 1 point loss to Geelong in Round 1, 2011).

Is this the record for fewest games for 3 draws?

Yeah that's the record. Next best is 3 draws in 17 games, by

As was pointed out to me by KennyK, Saturday night's draw marked the end of the second-longest extant sequence of games between two clubs without a draw, after 210 matches. The remaining big one is Geelong/Sydney, still yet to record a draw after 217 games. Next is Collingwood/Richmond (181), whose only drawn match was in 1917.

Just been flicking throughmy copy of "Every Game Ever Played 1897 - 1997" and came across the Fitzroy v University game from round 18 1909 which finished in a draw. Does anyone know where I can find more info on this match.

The result ment Fitzroy stayed 2 points and 1.5% ahead of University.
