Autopsy Draw

Emmett's fine when Freddie is playing as he gets more time and space, Walters should have a spell and put Sturt on. Even if he's shit, on current form we've lost nothing unfortunately and gained a whole ton of speed. Seeing the impact of Wagner, I'd make Chappy the 3rd tall/interceptor, and run Wagner, Clarke off half-back with Walker the lockdown (can revolve this, it's pretty versatile), giving Draper a well earned rest. A touch small, but jeez there's some drive and speed off half back that will open up space in front. Fyfe needs a break, looks mentally off it (constantly handballing to danger/traffic), give Brodie a chance at redemption.

Someone else mentioned it, get Amiss up the field more. Either sit Jackson or Treacy in the goal square for a bit and tell them to spoil and hit people really hard if they can't mark or get a good lead.

Still very young, this side is building to something for sure.

Well that's not the worst result in the world, more importantly we actually provided some form of entertainment on a Friday night and the AFL may even permit us to have another Friday night blockbuster one day!

Sharp and Banfield were in so many key plays in that final quarter, without Banners we lose that match by a few goals - he's really made this year his own.

We have so many issues though - how can it be acceptable to go nearly an entire half without kicking a goal? We are going nowhere until we get more regular contributors. Amiss will come good but he's got a bit to work on.

As everyone has said, Emmett and Walters need a spell - perhaps even Fyfe could do with a rest. I just don't see it happening though the coach would take this game as a win and he rarely makes changes when that happens.

I'm glad for the draw personally, it shifts the mindset a bit - the comp is so tight this year and we are beating no one with our percentage. Allows us to focus on just getting the 4 points at any cost.

Really hoping for a solid Peel game today to put some pressure on spots.

So, I was watching the 'After the Siren' pod and they mentioned 'Wharfie Time' as something special. I've heard of it before. Can someone explain what this is?

I think it all goes back to this:

The whole Wharfie Time at the game last night was the first time I can recall them doing it.

They did it at the Brisbane game last year is the first time I remember seeing it. I was too caught up in the moment to actually pay attention to what it is though. Just something that tells the crowd to make some noise?

Emmett took 8 marks, equal third for Freo and the other two were Luke Ryan and Alex Pearce with 179m gained.

That says to me that Tom is the one we are targeting for a mark to move the ball, he's working his butt off to present that option and he shouldn't be - Jackson and Treacy need to take more marks and he can be closer to goal.

Our defence is top 3 in the comp and our midfield when they’re up and about is pretty formidable also. I still don’t have much faith in our forward line, we definitely aren’t getting enough out of our smalls, Walters/Switkowski/Emmett have only combined for 16 goals from their 30 combined games, and Amiss is obviously down on form, but if we can get even just a few more goals a game from these guys it would go a long way.

Unrelated but it is amusing to see Pies fans whinge about umpires when they won the free kick count and were on the end receiving end of some very dodgy frees that resulted in goals especially in the 1st half. The free against Amiss on the quarter time siren comes to mind. Let’s also remember those same umpires dragged them over the line in at least 2 of their 3 finals last year on their way to the flag. That 4th quarter in the Prelim against GWS is still one of the more disgraceful umpire carry jobs I’ve ever seen. If GWS had any fans that 1 point loss would have been really hard to cop and rightfully protested.
Excellent post and I agree with everything pretty much. Our backline is just scary good now that Chapman is back and Walker has improved from his terrible start to the year. I've asked the question before, can anyone name a more improved player in the AFL this year than Clark? He is truly elite now.
And yep, the forward line is bottom 4 in the league quality.
These two factors are fixed every week, which means that whilst I think we should try any Hail Mary we can to fix the forwards, in fact the most logical way we're going to progress from a maybe team to a finals team this year is the midfield. Jackson has to come good in there and get back to the ball hunting tackling animal he can be. It's why persevering with Johnson even though he's not playing well makes sense, that X factor might finally click in. Switta having a bit of a run there works sometimes. Maybe we do have to get Wagner onto a wing/half forward rotation with Banners?

And yeah, Collingwood complaining about umpiring? Eat a bag of dicks

It seems to be a cue for the crowd to make maximum noise to lift the boys, but is only ever used when either we need to get a goal to win in the last 3 minutes of a game, or perhaps defend against one.

The phrase does date back to that famous pre-game speech of Pav's on a Friday night, and seems to be the meaning of that boat card that Gary Ingraham was holding up from the bench for what appeared to be the entire final quarter last night. I interpret that as "Sail on, Freo" myself, but still...

A lot of people were making out that it was the very first time they had ever seen it, but it was used a couple of times last year as well - the North Melbourne game and the Brisbane one, as mentioned.

I can’t speak for everyone but I’d hope most of us blocked out ever attending that north game last year

We really lack depth, Walters and Fyfe are in horrible form with no confidence and or cooked, then you have guys like Emmett and Johnson that aren't up to it at this level getting a game. That's carrying a lot.
I think Johnson as much as Draper had a genuine learning experience last night. Johnson learned where he needs to take his game to to lift to that next level. I think that's how you develop that depth is by exposing the bottom 6 to that level of pressure that they just will never see in the WAFL. I'm pretty encouraged by Johnsons willingness to keep at it and become somewhat effective by the end of the game.

The best comparison is Walker. We all remember the Semi where he had one of the worst games ever played. Last night he looked great on Hill. You need that experience in those games.

Emmett however does feel like a placeholder until we get a genuinely good small forward. Still, he too is quite inexperienced.

Pretty sure Fyfe was assigned a defensive role on Pendles tonight before everyone buries him.

Not to sure why there is so much negativity on Fyfe.

Yes he is not the pack busting bull that he was, he is now playing a team role, connector of plays. His use of his hands is still very good.

Didn’t see much of Pendles last night, and he was close to Fyfe when I spotted him. The run with role near Pendles, could have been part of the game plan.

Fyfe will have a week off to freshen up, but to me he is doing his job. Some weeks he goes to star level, some weeks he stays at team workman level.

Might be symptomatic of the most insanely negative member of the supporter base I've ever encountered taking up temporary residency in my block (praying to god that she's a temporary member resell and not a permanent addition), but I came away from that feeling somewhat more positive than negative.

A bad quarter and a bit of footy shouldn't detract from the positive way we played early on and the fight in the final 10. We got kidney punched by Yeo and Reid in the Derby and folded completely a month ago, the fightback here shouldn't be discounted.

  • Collingwood are possibly the best two minute drill side in the comp, and we came very close to beating them at their own game.
  • Longmuir being willing to ring the changes: SwingMoose, Switta into the midfield critical in the dying stages
  • Long may the Banners renaissance continue - he's clearly recognised that he needs to go above and beyond to keep his spot in the side, and is delivering the goods as a result.
  • Assuming the side is picked on merit (ha ha), you could make a strong AA case for Moose, Ryan and Clark at the moment - all immense; Chapman's class is the cherry on top.
  • Other than the comeback final against the Dogs and the Prelim against Sydney, the Wharfie Time call is possibly the loudest crowd reaction I've been a part of. Must be used sparingly, but a phenomenal bit of psychology.

  • The small forward mix still needs to be changed up. Switta was better this week, but I'm not sure how we can continue to carry both Emmett and Sonny with such low output. I don't think Sturt is the answer (Banners is already playing his ideal role, plus a returning Freddy offers a similar marking target) and understand people's arguments that Delean and Simpson aren't ready; but Tommy and Sonny aren't currently up to it either.
  • No Voss and Treacy playing further up the ground meant the lack of pressure from the smalls was even more noticeable. Felt like the ball movement became a lot cleaner when Jackson went further up the ground and Treacy rolled deeper.
  • We obviously managed to seize the momentum back, but that third quarter lapse is a bit of a worry.
  • Whilst I thought the ball movement was solid for most of the night, where we need to get better is knowing when to pull the trigger on the releasing kick; even if it's just a momentum propelling thing without an ideal target in mind.

Final Siren well worth a watch/listen this week - particularly for those of us who wonder why it's not just a matter of flicking a switch for passages of play like we saw in the final five minutes.

I'm sorry but outside of the 1st 10 mins and the last 7, that was s**t.

We've got problems.

Sounds like a lot went right while a lot didn't go to plan.

But still managed to not lose.

Pies left the door open and we almost made it through.

I would think players league wide are excited at the prospect of joining Freo, especially skilful forwards who will be made to look AA worthy for five years.

As some have mentioned when Amiss is getting double teamed and we are kicking long to him it's never ever going to work. It's an easy set play to block and intercept mark for them. I feel that when he is struggling and giving away free kicks , JL needs to move the magnets even if for a short time , get him down the ground and clunking marks to build his touch and get into the game.

It just seemed like his role is super one dimensional at the moment and it's not working.

I wish people would get off his back tbh. Even when he’s having a quiet or bad game he still has commanding presence, it’s clear the boys are walking just a tad taller when he’s around

Pretty sure Collingwood just squeezed us when they realised we were hurting them with our fast play. It was good experience to have to execute under that much pressure with very little space and time. We were able to break through on occasion and scire in clumps. Which was. a credit to us imo.

TLDW: Serong threw up six times in the last quarter.

They also removed Fyfe the turn over merchant and put Johnson in the middle.
Hardly Fyfe’s fault.
Midfield got dominated for the first time this season. Collingwood slowly got on top in the clearances. If only Fremantle had an elite ball mover and IQ as Daicos. When he has the ball, you just know things will happen. Serong doesn’t do that. Always handball happy when he should be kicking it

Young had a humbling game. Serong sloppy. Jackson/Darcy just lumbersome.

In replay Fyfe was ok. I was really just responding to someone who suggested Johnson was an improvement on Fyfe and fixed the problem. He wasn't and he didn't. imho
