With recent talk of drawn finals was curious to look up how often they are likely to happen
and found we can expect one about every six or seven seasons which surprised me.

From 1931 to 1971 the final four system was used.
In all that time 3 finals were drawn and replayed.
The 1946 2nd Semi-Final
1948 Grand Final and 1962 Preliminary Final.
3 draws in 167 finals matches

From 1972 to 1990 the final five system was used.
In that time of 19 finals series 3 finals were drawn and replayed.
The 1972 2nd Semi-Final
1977 Grand Final and 1990 Qualifying Final
3 draws in 117 finals matches

From 1991 to 1993 a final six system was used.
0 draws in 21 finals matches

From 1994 to present we have had a final eight system
The AFL had changed to all finals leading up to grand final would now use extra-time to decide a result if scores were level at the end of normal game time.
1994 and 2007 had a finals match being level at the siren and go into extra-time.
That is 2 extra-time finals in 22 finals series.
The 2010 Grand Final was the last drawn final replayed so we have had 3 games been a draw at normal siren time from 199 finals matches under the final eight systems.

In total been 504 finals matches since the McIntrye finals systems have been in place.
7 actual draws that replayed in all those games and 2 games that were level that decided in extra-time finals.
Basically 9 games at the siren were level from 504 finals matches.
Average of 1 in 56 finals.
Given we have 9 finals matches programmed in normal final eight system we can expect scores to be level about every 6 or 7 seasons in finals series.

Probably means we are about due for one in the next two seasons.
The chances of it being a grand final though are pretty slim.
I hope it is though. :p
