Re: NAB Challenge : North Melbourne vs Port Adelaide

How close is Davenport to your best 22? Is he still on the fringe, waiting for an injury, or will he get games?

The honest answer on Davenport is, nobody knows if he'll play in round 1. He's had one good trial game and he's going to have to displace a proven performer somewhere to get a spot. I'd rate him 10% at best. As gopower wrote, he should play during the year, but it depends on form (his and Port's) and injury.

Here's my likely 22

B: Thurstans, Carlile, Surjan
HB: Krakouer, Chaplin, Pettigrew
C: Salopek, Cassisi, K Cornes
HF: Rodan, Tredrea, Boak
F: Westhoff, Motlop, Ebert
R: Lade, C Cornes, S Burgoyne
I: Brogan, Carr, Pearce, P Burgoyne
Em (from): Thompson (r), Meyer (r), Gray, Logan, Thomas, Davenport

A few points to consider. That 22 is close to what I'd consider the lock in group to start now. The only one I think could be displaced is Surjan, but we need one small defender at least for Essendon. Krakouer was under examination at half back, but has impressed more with each outing, so should be a starter. Ebert's pre-season hasn't been the best but Choco's loyalty program should see him thru. If it didn't, Gray would probably replace him, maybe Thompson.

Logan is desperately unlucky to miss out, followed closely by Gray, then Thomas. You either completely discount Thompson and Meyer or one goes into the side - there's no point promoting a rookie (neither has been promoted yet) and leaving him out.

I haven't even considered one of the more fringe talls like Salter or M Westhoff (and for balance sake you might want to), nor Marlon Motlop who has come under consideration in the pre-season and was also impressive against the Roos (25 touches).

So you see Davenport would have to produce a Hulk leap to jump over all those candidates, plus displace an existing player, to get into the 22.

If they are going to upgrade someone it will be after this weeks final PS game...probably the monday or tuesday of Round 1 week I reckon.

Re: NAB Challenge : North Melbourne vs Port Adelaide

Its hard to see where they rate the fringe players until you see Round 1. Davenport had plenty of gametime in two of the three games and impressed pretty well. I can see him getting games in the first month, but im not sure about Round 1. Theres been a few players impress like Dav and Krak, Thomas seems to be up there as well but when you add in Carr coming back and Peter playing probably a midfield role again, im not sure if Dav will play R1.

I think Kane is in for a huge year as well.

According to Matty Primus in today's presser, the St Kilda trial game will give a good indication of who will play in round 1. They want to pick as close as possible to the starting team and use match day rotations.

I'd say after his NAB cup he's pretty much guaranteed a 22 spot, at least from a Round 1 point of view. You can find his other scores here www.fanfooty.com.au. Should rack up some decent numbers across half back, and yes he has been playing there all NAB cup and Choco has publicly stated he wants to play him there this year. I'm deciding between him and Skipworth. BTW it's Krakouer.

Now because I answered your question, do you think Mitch Robinson is best 22 for you guys, and if not how close is he?

Was coming here to ask about Krak and P Burgoyne. Krak has been answered here, so how's the latter been traveling this pre season?

On Robinson, I really do think he's in our best 22. Was named in our best in the 2 NAB cup games he played in, and was rested a long side a heap of big names against the Geelong. I'd be stunned if he wasn't picked rd 1

Yeah, I'm a Crows fan, but hopefully someone will answer my question anyway.
I've been looking at Danyle Pearce as a possible big mover this year (up 10-15 ppg)
I was reasonably impressed with him in the Aborigial Vs Crows game. Then he has put in 2 good scores during the Preseason so far.
Does anyone know how he did on the weekend in the NAB Challenge game?
Is he likely to keep up this up? Rodan and Salopek have had limited game time this preseason which may have inflated his scores.
He's hovered around the mid-to-low 70s for 3 years now, so either he's ready to step up (it's his 5th year, so it's long enough to take the step) or this is about where he is at with his style of play.
I'm hoping for a mid-to-high 80s return from him, is this conceivable?
Or am i better off stretching another 10k and going for Foley?

weird-I had exactly the same dilemma between Foley and Pearce. Went with Foley as i think he might receive less attention this year as someone will probably need to tag cousins

Yeah Kane is a must have. A disposal machine.

Pearce could improve 10-15 ppg this year, but then again he may not. Hes a real 50-50 call. It wouldnt surprise me if he did improve that much, but then again there is that chance that he will stay around the similar level.

Cheers for the reply
Got similar responses from both teams, so I guess I'll have to make the decision myself
Or just not get either

Re: NAB Challenge : North Melbourne vs Port Adelaide

Travis Boak, what's his pre-season been like and will he step up this year, put bias aside.

Likliehood of increase in disposals?

Like any highly-rated upper first round draftee going into his third year. He's put on some muscle and looks primed.

Therefore his numbers might improve a little or they might improve a lot. Price is right for such a punt though.

Re: NAB Challenge : North Melbourne vs Port Adelaide

is there any reason to believe Brendon Lade wont be back to his best this season? Can he average close to 100 DT points/game like he did in 06?

I'm very impressed by P.A, being a roos supporter i went out to watch the match the last saturday and it was exactly how i thought it would be.... you guys dominate the stoppages, hit targets, run and carry through the middle and link up better than most teams! I sat right in front of the essendon coaching staff who were there havin a look and all i could hear gary o donnell saying was that port adelaide and there style of play really annoy and fristrate the sh*t out of opposition teams, especially the bombers! him and knights were tryin to work out how to stop your midfield and half back line from running amuk.. but its just too hard!! haha

Hey guys just wondering how Brett Ebert's going? Had a good 07 if i remember correctly and topped your goal scoring. Also Daniel Motlop? is he more a mark and goal (fevola) would he be a good pickup?

Krak in your best 22?

Well, his competition in Lower has been abducted by aliens and Stewart's seemingly faded out of contention. Combine this with Chocolate's unabashed love for him and his preseason form and he's almost certain to be, at least for Round 1 anyway.

Ebert and Motlop are both good players but are also both crap dream teamers. As you wondered they are similar to Fevola in that they don't get much of the ball unless they're kicking goals with it, but I doubt either of them will be scoring 99 goals, which when you are a Fev type player you need to do if you want to score big.

Krak in your best 22?

Had been answered before, but yes. He's also in my Dream Team's 22.

Salopek or Boak remembering Boak is only 370k and Salopek is well over 400k.

I'd go Boak. Sal's my favourite player but the talk is of him moving into the backline, so it'll be tough for him to keep up his 95 average. Only Hodge did it out of the backline last year, and only Carrazzo and Embley got close. Plus he's extremely injury prone
