I think over the last 2 years Petrie has been catching up to Ottens. As a pure ruck, Ottens is a much better footballer. Smart, clean and gathers his own clearances while being able to go up forward. He's more smooth than Petrie.

Down back, Petrie is the much better footballer. Up forward, even though Ottens has kicked I think it was 47 goals in a season, I think Petrie is better suited there. In the end, Ottens is the better footballer for now, but Petrie will overtake him soon.

Ottens should be played as a ruckman that rests in the forward half and Petrie as a FF who can pinch hit in the ruck. Both will play there this season, so wait and see I guess.

One things for sure, both are not 'clearly' better than the other. Although Ottens is the better player.

I only said Ottens is "clearly" the better ruckman, and I'll stand by that.

what you said is about Petrie being forward/ruck is correct, that how he should be in 2010, before just becoming a forward in 2011 when Todd Goldstein takes over, Petrie shouldn't be used in the ruck at all, too much value as a forward.

Ottens right now is a ruckman, and should never have a "/forward" attached to his name any more, he should, and does, only very rarely spend time in the forward 50 as a marking option.

2/ How is Ottens clearly a better ruckman?

I will concede he is better at the center bounces, but Drew averaged 10 hitouts a game, yet was one of the 3 ruckman nominated for the All-Australian squad in 2008, his only full season in the position.

I think that is a fair indication of how good he was around the ground, backed up by the fact he was in the top 3 in the league for contested marks.

Drew only has 1 year as a formline in the position, and its arrguably better than any Ottens has produced.

So its not CLEARLY at all.

10 hitouts a game as a ruckman? Better than anything Ottens has produced? Hmmm

Its debatable if he is even a better ruckman.

Drews only full season in the position resulted in him being selected in the 40 man All-Australian squad in 2008.

Petrie is set to be the permanent FF for all of 2010, just like he was against St Kilda.

I suggest you watch that game,

Fine, and if you want to highlight an individual game, you could also pop in the 2007 Qualifying Final. See how Ottens went against the opposition ruckmen that day.

For the record, Petrie is EASILY the better forward, and defender (Ottens is neither, obviously). But Ottens in my opinion is the better ruckman. Hopefully when we play this season they'll line up against each other and we'll find out.

I believe Ottens is significantly better as a pure ruckman (sits comfortably amongst the likes of Sandilands, Jolly and Cox when fit), though Petrie is also very good.

Petrie does have a comfortable edge in terms of versatility however, being a superior forward and defender.

All things being equal in terms of injuries, I guess some teams would rather Ottens for 2010, and some would rather Petrie. I'll refrain from voting.

Yep agreed. They're pretty different players really all things considered.

I honestly think Ottens must have killed Bambi's mother in a past life. He has always been very harshly dealt with by (especially) the media, and also a lot of fans. I can't remember a ruckman who works as hard at ground level. This attribute of this game remains completely unnoticed by the football media. Half of them still think he should be a forward.

Lol, this pretty much sums it up unfortunately.

Definetley Petrie. As everyone says, I just prefer his versatility over Ottens. I think though he finally has a settled position at CHF, and that is where I prefer him personally as well. The way he played in the Saints game last year really sums him up for me, a truly committed team man and has a heck of a lot of courage.:thumbsu:
