Roast Drop Marc Murphy

We need to find a way of sending a clear message to them without actually having to drop them. Here's my suggestion: :D:D:D

But seriously, they do need to lift, and quite frankly show a bit of passion particularly in Gibbs case. Would I go as far as dropping either of them yet? Given our current depth .. no.

This isn't about winning next week, it's about changing a broken culture.

Bigger names than Marc Murphy have been dropped, and prospered for it. There's no room for pea hearts, and I don't care what pick they were in the draft.

Sure, that is a slightly different argument. But do you really think that dropping a star player is an effective way of communicating to the group? Maybe a guy like Setanta thinks to himself, "hey I must be doing something right if I am getting a game ahead of that guy"? Murphy was far from his best on Sunday but he was not sufficiently bad to get dropped. Players should be picked on their output and not on reputation, and therefore we should not drop one player because he wasn't as good as he has been over another who was worse, but closer to his best. Also, players, where possible, should be managed back into form, not dropped because of it. I would argue that Carlton are too reactionary at selection and would benefit from greater stability. We are pretty much getting to the point of the season where we need to pick our best group and play them every week. You don't win finals by making 3 or 4 changes every week. Yes, that loss was unacceptable, but we need to be thinking finals in a couple of weeks from now and for that we need stability, not statements.

I think at some point we need to get a little ruthless with our ins and outs.
If a player is playing below HIS standard he should be dropped, no matter who he is.
When players know they might miss next week if they cant keep up the standard set for them it creates a huge amount of competitiveness to maintain a spot.

Musical chairs?

Makes sense cause then you replace them with guys who can't get a game in the first place

They weren't dropped after one bad game.
No, Del Santo was dropped for treading water over several games - much like Murph has been for weeks now. Yes, he had an interrupted pre-season, but he should be working harder than he is.

This is amazing.. You dont win games of footy by dropping one of your best 3 players!
I think people need to harden up, and have a strong look at the ladder. If you can tell me we would be here at the start of the season... Your a brave man, Most critics gave us no chance to make finals!!

If we were to drop murphy, and carrots like everyone says (for some stupid reason) we will bring in Browne and hadley, WHO EVERYONE complains about and has a go at them!!!
You guys will be bitching saying "why the F*** did we bring hadley in who cant even run, and browne whos disposal is S*** " "sack the coach!!"
The doubters here who want murph to be dropped, this will be the result. AND YOU KNOW IT

We can go on the way we have and crib meaningless wins against 90lb weaklings, but that won't do anything for our long term gain.

We need to wipe the self-satisfaction off some players' faces.

No point beating Geelong and St Kilda who by the way have very slow defneders if we cant beat the North Melbournes and Hawthorns of the AFL.

Those are the teams that have the big bodies but are also quite quick.

I know a lot of people are going to shoot me down for this but so be it. This is not a knee-jerk reaction in any way but, to me, as has been far too weak in recent weeks. Can't tackle and doesn't chase hard enough. Several times in a game Murph will try to tackle an opposition player without putting his body in, but rather hanging back and trying to grab their jumper. PLUS i remember yesterday where Murph was chasing Robert Murphy, fell over, and didn't bother to get back up and chase again. R. Murphy went on to get a handball receive and kick a goal. Once again, not a knee-jerk reaction but this particular incident stands out in my mind and there have been several other similar incidents this year.

Ratts made a tough call with Waite and Thornton earlier this year and the team lifted, i think a call like dropping Murph will have a similar effect.
Should drop Betts while he is at it. Was being closely checked, and rather than lift his workrate he just dropped his head and accepted his fate.
Chase on Murphy in the third was woeful.
Scotty has been off too......Gibbs........Judd's disposal........Simmo's lack of workrate with a tag.........Jammo caught napping over and over and disposal poor..........Setanta's workrate.......

Hang on......if we drop all the guys who aren't putting in and could do better we'd lose most of the team.

We need another solution.

Sports psych IMHO.

Well, I don't argue with that.

Daniel Harford said yesterday that we look good when we can play the game on our terms, but our problems are when the game isn't on our terms. That's at the heart of the problem, and it gets back to the "mentally weak" tag that's becoming harder to deny.

FFS, when Richmond display more willpower with their personnel than we do with ours it should be a personal insult to every player and coach at the club. Do they look like they've been insulted? Do they look like they're playing angry?

So going on your theory then we should drop half the bloody side ..Jamieson would be the first to go if we went for the chicken little over the top reaction call . :thumbsd:

Murphy won't be dropped, he was tagged on Sunday and it got to him. I saw Picken piss him off late in the 3rd as he was going off, and Murph had a swing at him but missed. It was just not our day, not even our month.

I've also heard about Gibbs carrying an injury, can anybody confirm this?

The less skilled players (Robbo, Arnfield) are having a good crack, but the better players are underperforming or not going hard enough.

Both Murphy and Gibbs to me seem to have very little influence in the early part of games, as the games open up they become effective.
The fact more and more games are being decided early on it is something they both need to improve on if they are to become elite.

Absolutely BB:thumbsu:

I asked if we had a sport psychologist down at the club, obviously our boys suffer some mental issue because we all know they have the skills and talent to play with the best of them, the issue is making them do it week in week out.

Mental issue, nothing more.

Well yes and no.

I think the mental issue is part of it.

There is definately an issue with some of the players skill level.......which of course in some respects is also a mental issue, but I don't think one which a sports psych can help with.

There may also be some issue with teams having studied our structures and now having figured us out a bit we need to adapt.

So there are many layers.

Where I'm coming from though is:
  1. Pre-match Ratten quite obvioulsy identified Lake as an issue. The plan cannot have been to bomb it long and hope our rucks/defenders come forwards would beat him in marking duals. Yet this is what was delivered. Mental.
  2. At half time I could see, as I'm sure many of you could, that unless we applied loads more pressure to their ball carriers we were dead. What I wanted to see in the first 10 mins of the third was a resolve to do something about that. We laid our first tackle for the quarter about 15 mins in, and only laid 12 for the second half. That's not skill. That's desire and workrate.
When our desire and workrate are up we are good enough to gloss over our deficiencies that seem to be the easy target for "Monday's experts" and our decision making and execution gets better.

Start with something it takes no skill to fix, and the rest will follow to some extent.........well....good enough to beat the reigning premiers and the runners up anyway.:thumbsu:

I didnt see the Bulldogs game but i cant believe i am reading this.

From all match day reports from newspapers etc i dont remember Murphy being criticised in any form of media outlet. Murph MAY of had a bad game according to you and your opinion but Murph is in our best 3 players at the club right now and has been for the last 2 years and dropping him is a massive over reactive knee jerk action much like this thread.

Such a happy little Ostrich you are TG, head so deeply buried up your own arse.
Show some respect on other team boards Bulldog supporter.

I am starting to think that some other clubs think he (and Gibbs?) is weak - anyone else notice that Brisbane kid No.30 have a go at him as the teams were going off the ground at half time last week. He will continue to improve for a couple of years but physically he is nearing his prime (23 next week) He will get stronger but not better as a raw athlete for the seasons take their toll earlier and earlier nowadays (see Juddy and Brock) He is probably hampered by an injury but I still look forward to him one day gut running to the point of collapse

We know zip but on appearances I would say Eddie thinks he has made it. He loves watching himself on the big screen - he will even show/act obvious disappointment after a loss and he has had a pretty good year BUT when we/he need a lift I wish he would run himself ragged to the point of needing to be interchanged - a bit of that Cousin's gutrunning.
