Just heard on the news that police investigations have led them to the town of Geelong in Victoria, with Gary Ablett being the suspected drug dealer. For years people of all walks of life have visited Geelong and heard locals use the term "God speed" believing they meant farewell, but it turns out "God speed" was the best drug in town. :thumbsu:

Oh yes, 1995 when you cheated to win the flag? Funny how in discussions thats the tarnished flag so its always avoided. Just like WCE flag. Noone will really remember it for how you won it, just that you won it filled with players on illegal substances and that one player nearly overdosed overseas.

Wow, what history your clubs have. Great stories to tell the grandkids. "Yep, i was there when Benny ran around the 'G... and subsequently when he ran away from the police. And i remember the day our club imploded, and when our club champion hit the drugs and ruined his life..."

People down Geelong way worship their GOD , this is the same God that see's dead people and does nothing. Hardly think Geelong supporters are in a position to take too high a moral stance.

The same Geelong people who think this bloke should be a Hall of Famer for his footy feats whilst ignoring his serious indiscretions.

Don't ever post anything like that again.

Ignoring serious indescresions at you club has lead one man into rehab and another almost into his grave.

So I'll just say, while we're not in a good position to comment, you are in a far worse one.

Ablett's indiscretions happened MANY many years into retirement and many years AFTER he should have been placed in the Hall Of Fame where he rightfully belongs.

Cousins has done all this DURING his playing career, Fletcher basically O'Ded, you have had 8 say they were on it, your coach has come out and said he was told noone did anything then had players admit they were users, and Sampi making threats to women and Kerr tapdancing on taxis.

Dare i say all that means you should never talk involving teams and past indiscretions, as basically its been just Ablett and Steve Johnson being Geelongs only blemishes for many years, and Ablett's happened in retirement whilst he had no association whatsoever with the club.

The whole should he/shouldn't he be in the Hall of Fame question is bullcrap. Sordid behaviour isn't the exclusive domain of the modern player, far from it. Some of those footy trips in the past would have involved all sorts of morally reprehensible conduct, but what went of the footy trip stayed on the footy trip.

Players these days are simply under more scrutiny. Thirty years ago anything a player of Ablett's stature did would have been hushed up.

Funny how Geelong supporters get so defensive over Ablett all of a sudden  One can be pretty damn sure he was on the gear during his playing career. He wouldn't have just suddenly turned to drugs after it was all over.

What a pointless and useless thread.

Do we really have to be so childish? Ablett went to court and was charged, Cousins is currently seeking help, Carlton won the 1995 premiership, Geelong haven't won a GF in a long time.

Facts. Do we have to bicker about them all the time? It gets really lame. Just move on.

Erm, I think you may have missed my point… I’m saying I don’t think Ablett is necessarily the only player in the Hall of Fame who’s done something morally repugnant - only we'll never know because players in the past didn't experience the scrutiny players get today.

But FWIW, I think it’s entirely feasible that Gary went to drugs after he retired; the absence of AFL footy would leave a massive void in a player’s life. Some would fill that void constructively, others might fill it destructively.

How can you be pretty damn sure? For most of his career he was a recluse.

Ohhh i get it, its because of his talent. Wow, great detective work there Columbo, i suppose you think Lockett, Silvagni and Voss were on it too?

Moron.
