Play Nice Drugs - we're losing

Watched this last night, will suck if the media just uses it for Russia/Putin bashing in the current environment. It's a good watch given the farce of Gatlin booing, Bolt worshiping over the past few days, especially given what some testers say in the documentary - Don Catlin straight out says to the camera "they're all doping, every single one of them".

Particularly hilarious is a meeting between the filmmaker on behalf of Rodchenkov and incredulous WADA officials who give the impression their embarrassment and failure is more of a concern than Rodchenkov blowing the whistle and risking his life.

A line from that trailer sums up my feelings (mostly) ''why would I watch an event thats fixed''

In my wide eyed youth I thought they were heroes, then in my callow 20s I accepted doping happened , but not us Aussies, now I watch the Olympics with a very jaundiced eye. Even the Aussies are on it

I have just written a blog article for my final year at university. Focusing on WADA's response to Russia's anti-doping fine and appeals.
I would be highly appreciative if you could read and comment. I'd be happy to do the same for anyone else

Cheers,

Not bad. The line about careers being over by 40 should also carry the now old survey of Olympic Medallists who were asked if they could be guaranteed a win in their event by taking a magic pill.

Mirkin Survey

‘Nor did they [the authors of the report] refer to Mirkin’s study of over a hundred competitive runners, more than half of whom indicated that they would take a “magic pill” that guaranteed them an Olympic gold medal, even if it would kill them within a year’. (Waddington, 2005, p. 482; Waddington & Smith, 2009, p. 111).

According to this report, a global drug tester was worried that there was a prolonged period in 2020 for athletes to cheat without any fear or consequences.

“Athletes easily avoided testing because their country was in a lockdown, and then you had cheating athletes only having to say they had a small fever or some other Covid symptom and then they weren’t even tested, so very little testing was done,’’ the drug tester said.

In April 2020 only 569 out of competition tests were obtained from athletes around the world, 12,000 less than in April the year before. There has been a big increase in testing this year but the latest testing numbers gloss over the fact that the time to uncover the cheating has long passed.

It's hard to know how many tests were avoided, and it would be unfair to point the finger at any individuals without evidence, but one official suggested a window into the levels of what has been going will be to look at how many records and personal bests will tumble at the Games.

My doubts about this Olympics has been increasing exponentially as it has progressed, watching the sheer number of PBs getting smashed across the board and inexplicable improvements of athletes (Including Australians) has left me with the belief that this is probably the most tainted Olympics since those dark days back in late 80s early 90s.

Some of the results you look at and go, that just does not make sense, and when I get that feeling I just can't trust it is a legitimate result.

Agreed, we have seen a number of PB broken this year especially after we didn't have many competitions last year due to covid19.

The same can be said with other sporting events, eg tennis. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/...t-as-result-of-covid-19-itf-reveals-9r9j82n5x

Kevin Young's 400m hurdles record stood for 19 years until Karsten Warholm took 0.08 of second off it last month. In the Olympic final not only did Warholm go almost a second under Young's old record but two other athletes went under the old time.

In the men's 100m all three medalists set PBs. The winner, Marcell Jacobs was a long-jump specialist who had never broken 10 seconds until May this year then ran 9.80 in the final.

In the women's 100m Elaine Thompson Herah broke Florence Griffith-Joyner's Olympic record set in 1988. The bronze medalist also set a new PB.

The women's triple jump saw a new world record over the one that had stood since 1995. The silver and bronze medalists also set new PBs.

Individually you can't point to cheating but taken together it looks like some athletes have taken advantage of the lack of testing.

I had read about Hassan and the doubts surrounding her - so I looked up her coach

Alberto Salazar who is currently under suspension for 4 years

In 2019 Salazar was banned for 4 years from athletics for doping offenses involving those athletes he coached.[5] The Nike Oregon Project was shut down in the wake of the controversy.[6] In January 2020 he was placed on the United States Center for SafeSport's temporarily banned list.[7]

His temporary ban was made permanent after allegations of sexual and emotional misconduct had been investigated by the SafeSport organization.

Just like Russian athletes suffered because of the regime of coaches and chemists pushing the drugs - so should athletes of suspended coaches be suspended from competition until they return XX clean tests
