I wouldn't be picking Wood regardless of Otten. I can't see his scores increasing enough as he doesn't pick up enough cheap possessions. Your better off going up to Adcock or down to a rookie IMO.

well, I don't mean to say he definitely will, just a feeling I've had about it. we won't carry a 3rd/4th ruckman as a sub and it's likely to be a utility player of some sort. given Otten's return from injury and average pre-season form it isn't unreasonable to suggest it won't be him for a few weeks.

Have taken the advice and changed my defence to this:

Field:

Goddard
Gibbs
Deledio
Grimes
Suban
Otten
Heppell

Bench:

Duigan
Puopolo
Lower

Still thinking about getting rid of Suban, but I feel compelled to take a risk. Something to think about over the next week.

I feel like my defence is just a bit weak compared to the rest of my team. It just feels like it lacks depth (which is even more important now with the bye).

My defence

Field:
Goddard (471K)
Gibbs (400K)
Deledio (371K)
Suban (248K)
Wood (198K)
Otten (142K)
Heppell (132K)

Bench:
Toy (97K)
Lower (92K)
Puopolo (92K)

Any advice?

Put Lower on the field over Wood. Get rid of Wood for Stanley, his scoring in the preseason has been ordinary. Don't think I can see value at 200k, better options around. Get rid of Puopolo for Duigan. Can't see him getting many games. Find a way to upgrade Suban to a genuine keeper.

Im still unsure whether it will be wood or stack playing through that rebounding role - or both. So Im not too confident in selecting either currently. Bit more reading to do for me yet...

IMO Stack aint best 21 and Wood will play a more defensive role with the ability to run and rebound naturally. Will be a good AFL player in a few years.

I have found myself including Jackson Trengove as my 5th back today. I've had Adcock/Everitt for most of the pre season, but I really wanted to squeeze Fyfe into my fowardline. I'm not sure if I should maybe downgrade Otten to a rookie like Toy, and then upgrade Trengove back to Adcock, or stick with it. I firmly believe Trengove can average 70-75 this year, based on his pre season and utility role within the Port side. The added benefit is Port have the last bye, meaning plenty of time to make cash.

On Adcock, I've heard he'll play more of a lock down role, which I don't think will bode well for his scoring. You have to remember his 88 was against a very young GC side.

Goes without saying, but Adcock's durability is also an issue. He hasn't played a full season since 2008.

This is a question I put to the Essendon FC board, but worthy of talking about here also:

I am heading towards the Heppel-Hibberd combo (one in the mids to create the DP link) but there seems like a lot of congestion in the Bombers backline. With guys like Dempsey, Myers, Welsh, Dyson, Slattery, Fletcher, Hardingham, Stanton, Hooker, Carlisle and McVeigh all able to play through the backline, I'm very concerned with the job security of Heppell (probably more of a midfielder from what I can gather) and Hibberd (a genuine halfback flanker).

What are people's thoughts on where they fit into a best 21?

Hibberd's spot in Essendon's 21 looks stronger since Slattery's injury. I think Slats will miss 2-3 rounds. After that, I'd say he's on the outer. Pears will hopefully return after 5 or so rounds. Has the potential to take a smaller forward, not just the bigger KPs.

Heppell's a tough one to predict.

One would expect Otten to score better than Adcock?

Otten is coming back from a knee injury and only playing his second season, he had a 68 average for 2009 and didn't score over 60 once in pre-season. Not really going to be any better scoring-wise than Adcock, but he will probably be better value to trade up from as a cash cow.

It won't be like not having Barlow by any means.

Slattery is best 21. Absolutely without question.

Im only going to take one H. I think Slattery will knock at least one out of the team and Essendon have great depth to there list this year. The last thing i want is both of my H's not playing every week. So ill likely go with the cheaper option, so it doesnt hurt as much if he is dropped for Slattery and others.

Would take something special for Slattery to knock both of the out DWD! Slattery is only listed as a couple of weeks, so will be back for round 2. I'm expecting Hibberd's match time to dry up when he does, and will be watching plenty of people get hurt because of it.

Hibberd is also a very capable outside midfielder/HBF type which he mainly played in the VFL. So once the return of Slattery happens he still has the ability to play elsewhere. I think he is ahead of most of these players if not all (Myers, Welsh, Dempsey, NLM, Heppell) in most Essendon fans eyes at the moment. He also has DPP and that could be a great benefit for a guy that should be around the 18-25 player at essendon most of the year.

The thing that concerns me most is that he might become our sub.

I don't get why people are scared of the sub. Isn't it for a player who gets injured, in which case they wouldn't have played the rest of the game anyway? I know it doesn't have to be for an injured player - but I'd imagine a lot of the time it will be.

I meant Hibberd might start as the sub on a few occasions

But lets look at Gaff. Priced at 148k~. That means he is priced at in points perspective 37. With the magic number dropping it means he needs to avg more than this to maintain his price. Probably about 40-42~. So if he is going to be a sub than its likely he will play between 1.5 quarter - 2 quarters on most occasions. For any rookie its extremely hard to score 40 points in that amount of game time.

A sub can be used at any time the club feels fit. Not just for injuries, for fatigue and what not.

So by picking Gaff you would actually lose money. So with rookies especially expensive ones, you want to make sure they are locked away best 20 or not playing at all. Heppell rings of perfect sub material aswell and hes priced quite highly.

Fair call. I think my confusion was I wasn't considering the player who starts as the sub, rather than the player who gets subbed off.
