Re: 2011 Backs Thread

Well done Thorgils, was gonna fire these up in the new year but cheers for doing it now.

Obvious back options to consider early would be

PREMIUMS

Goddard
Lids
Gibbs

All DP as well

VALUE

Otten
Adcock
Houli

ROOKIES (subject to positioning)

Toy
Mzungu
Iles
Coad
Puopolo
Hunt

Rounds 4 and 6 are hell rounds for the defence. Dogs, Lions and Saints with bye in Round 4, Cats, Hawks and Freo in Rd 6. Plenty of team balance required to dodge donuts there

Re: 2011 Backs Thread

Don't know what others think but I think the backs is the place to go conservative this year. There is little to enthuse about in the mid-pricers other than Otten who will be in 95% of teams so cancels out any advantage. The rookies look OK but the best will be expensive. I am expecting start with at least 4 premiums in the backs (or 3 plus one ready to swaqp over from the mids).

Re: 2011 Backs Thread

i for one am not picking otten at this stage

why pay an extra 100 odd grand when richardson and or mzungu could score as well if not better

assuming they are priced correctly at 2nd lowest price of course they are my 6th and 7th backs

Ummmm... Job security?

Re: 2011 Backs Thread

I note that Mzungu is not listed as a back on FF. That'll make it interesting.

I take the point made above on Otten and his price but to me his JS and likely output make him a real chance to be this years Mal or Watters. Hard to pass on him.

Most years I have played DT the backs have given me most grief, I don't see this year being any different.

I wonder what Brissies X Clarke will do this year, if anything?

Knee reco and hammy twang in the last couple of years.

It is a good point though, would most likely be best 22 and DP is useful if he could stay on the park

A positive sign though is he isn't listed in the Lions medical report, first time for a while. Might depend on the positioning of other rookies whether the risk needs to be taken

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/106449/default.aspx

Medical room: The Lions have had 35 players in full training in the lead-up to Christmas - that is more than half a dozen up on recent years when Voss's side has been disrupted by injury. Those still in recovery mode include Brendan Fevola (groin), Joel Patfull (hand), Matt Austin (leg) and impressive draftee Rohan Bewick (shin), but they should all resume with the main group shortly after the Christmas break. Jonathan Brown (groin) and Jamie Charman (ankle) will also be eased back into training but young midfielder Callum Bartlett (knee) isn’t expected back until midway through the season.

An interesting Lions based novelty bet for the year might be no X Clarke on Medical Report and no B Fevola on Arrest Report in same week. Almost got there this week.

You're right about the rookie positioning. Mzungu as one example. No doubt that Clarke will outscore his price if he can stay fit. Is there a bigger "if" though?

Re: 2011 Backs Thread

I thought FF had some inside info?

Mzungu played mostly as running half back in the WAFL before pushing in to the midfield. Not in the same league obviously but he had a Hodge type role with Perth. I'd be stunned if he was listed as a F/C.

From memory Houli was a B/C with Essendon wasn't he? He'll be on my watchlist but unlikely to be in many teams without some nice NAB showings.

I don't fully understand why but I think anyone without Heppell in their squad will regret it, especially if listed in the Backs.

Re: 2011 Backs Thread

Everyone is talking DP which I found very effective last year, but it only works if you swap with another player who is DP. If people are going to have Gibbs/Goddard/Deledio in their backs, who do they have them swapping with in their mids?

Re: 2011 Backs Thread

Playes I'm considering (some more than others) at this stage:

Rawlings
Scotland
Grimes

All 3 are guys I'm not 100% sure on but they have been discounted by alot of coaches early. None are worth writing off and pending fitness could all be very good picks.

Deledio a lock, Gibbs now the same. Broughton is very close.

Re: 2011 Backs Thread

My Backs at the moment on fan planner, pretty happy with them for now.

Goddard (a must have, no brainer really)
Gibbs (great value at his price and with MPP will be in most sides)
J Kelly (With GAJnr now gone will be 1st in line to get more time in the middle)
Duffield (expecting him to be named as a MID this season, if so he'll be out. He was named in the middle of the in most of freo's sides last season) (if he is out i'll go for Deledio
H O'Brien (has barely missed a game in the last 3 seasons, going for durabilty)
A Otten (a risk, but most people will be taking him. We all seen what he can do)
D Heppell
(rookie, seems to be in a lot fan planners at the moment)

Emergencies: B Jacobs (PTA), M Coad (GCS), C Richardson (NTH)
Total Spent: $2,566,800

Not too dissimilar to what I've got. Otten is a bit of a risk, but he's a lock in almost every side, so there's more risk in not picking him if that makes sense.

Re: 2011 Backs Thread

Definitley wouldn't have much value, but have to be prepared in any case to replace him in your planning/pre-seaon side.

Re: 2011 Backs Thread

Have other options but really hoping he retains MPP, as he should get more midfield time now Ablett has gone.

Re: 2011 Backs Thread

Kelly has durability issues though. Only played 20+ games in 3 of his 9 seasons and 22 games in just one of them. If i'm picking a premium i'd want it to be more likely that's he's not going to pick up an injury at some point during the season.

Has been very good for me in the passed. Just about all players need to be covered at one point due to injury or form. In 2009, Geelong and the Saints rested a whole group of players toward the end of the season. Kelly will score very well in 2011.

If they make Kelly only as a mid, well, I'll have too think hard for a replacement. Possibly Malceski would replace him.

Re: 2011 Backs Thread

Rawlings has flown under the radar, possibly a back where you could get what you pay for. I'm doubtful he'll improve, but someone like him is capable of growing into his new role with experience.
