I haven't seen much discussion on who the possible value keepers are. By this I mean the cheapest mids who could become legit top 10 players.

I was lucky a couple of years ago to get Montagna who was cheap for a top tier keeper. I had a crack last year cos I though Griffen might be ready but I guess it was prob Boyd that stepped up.

Does anyone think that around the 400k mark there are any chances of finding a top 5-10 mid. Scott Thompson I think is a possibility the way he finished the season.

- Andrew Swallow - love the way he plays, a very Boyd-esque game, but somehow cleaner. If he can lift from ~24 possessions a game to 28-30, there is a top 10. He tackles A LOT. $409K

- Burgoyne (looking menacing during the NAB Cup / preseason - strong Hawks midfield. $370K

- Murphy - has shown he can average over 100, can he build on that to a 105-110? I don't like the pick so much because other Carlton options like Judd and Gibbs can be restricting since Carlton's second bye is in round 23. But still probable value. $414K

- Scott Thompson - was top 5 in 2008 (from memory). Is the premier ballwinner in the Crows midfield, along with Vince and Van Berlo. Should benefit from Vince being fit this year. $398K

- Adam Cooney - has potential for monster scores, but also throws in 70s here and there. If he can get consistancy in his scoring, then maybe, but I don't quite think so. Had him last year and was very frustrating. $380K

- Dayne Beams - plays in a very successful team, in a powerful midfield. Three year rule and has already shown an ability to score well. However, you should probably have Swan already ... $361K


Those would be the ones I am looking at. After that you're getting into your midpricers / DPPs

Yeah Swallow is interesting.

Cooney, Beams (and Sidebottom who I considered) are out for me as I have Swan and Boyd.

A little more expensive is Dal Santo who I think could be good value but has the odd game where he goes missing.

I also considered Rockliffe because I don't have many Lions but always a raffle in second year.

Does have the ability to play HBF? I may have seen him on the HBF in a few teams, but ive also heard he is only a midfielder, so mclean holds him out a bit. But midfield rotations will be very important, You need about 12 "midfielders" per team now. So he still has a chance on the bench.

I really think yarran will play the season down back as long as it stays being successful which might curtail other borderline backline pics from carlton.

So using your logic

Geelong, Stkilda, Hawthorn, Magpues and buldogs are a NO GO ZONE. No good. Dont pick them, they have to many good players in there side.

Anthony will only help, help with maybe 5% attention decrease (only slight, but still something). As proven already many times before the better the players, the better the team and the more points are scored. Anthony only makes the roos midfield/team better thus more points.

Completely different midfielders: Swallow in the guts and Anthony on the wing. The increased development of our inside mids, Ziebell, Cunnington etc. they might 'steal' some ball off him which may mean his scores decrease slightly.

Also its important to note North came 15th in clearances last year so we were second to the ball alot more than our opposition: Swallow generates his points from tackles so if we improve in this area his amount of tackles may drop but his handballs and kicks may increase.

I think the numbers Josh Kennedy at Sydney is putting out in pre-season is throwing him into contention in this argument, if not in the argument as the top mid-priced midfielder. At 309k he's priced alright too.

At the moment with my team I have enough cap left to not bother with the risk of Foley's fitness and sit Kennedy as my 5th mid (even if it only leaves me 5k left over), but I doubt I'll do that. I'm also considering Brodie Martin.

Could be a good idea

4 genuine premiums, 1 midpricer than rest are rookies with Harris starting likely.

Takes away from picking to many rookie mids as the area seems weak now, just hard to find that extra 200k

Starting with 4 premiums plus a JPK leaves you less room to move. MIDs is where you're going to generate most of your cash. There are too many good rookie MIDs on offer plus the likes of Harris who for all intents and purposes should be mid priced.

I'd be more inclined to start with 3 premiums, JPK, Harris, rook (rook, rook rook).

don't get me wrong, I wasn't going to do four premium mids and Kennedy ... I can just afford to do it with the cap I have remaining.

I just think Kennedy's pre-season numbers - for whatever they are worth - are really throwing him into consideration.

Travis Boak at $394 000 is an absolute bargain as a premium player IMO. Averaged 95 last year with his last 3 games pulling big, big numbers. He will be a superstar of the comp and dream team this year.

Boak would be a great pickup if he strings together another 20+ games, also good to see Hartlett in the squad, keen to see how he goes.
And rookie wise, heard good things about your highly rated Jasper Pittard? Wouldnt mind picking up a unique-ish bench option as well, instead of the usual Atley, Wallis, Gaff..

What's the story with boak though. missed a large chunk of the preseason because of an appendix operation, supposedly. Groin problem also seems likely. orginally had him in the squad, massive upside, but preseason has left me cold

They do, but at his price, plus his previous record, puts him in the mid-price category, not bottom-end premium, which is what I was listing. JPK will be on a lot of peoples radars I suspect.

@ Wheedus. The rookies in the midfield are clearly lacking in depth and also probably quality in comparison to the backs and forwards. So it is actually a weak point in the midfield. Although the midpricers doesnt seem that strong, JPK seems a very good option though.

Its just hard it means you have to cut down in other areas like the 2nd ruck Jolly>Mcevoy

Or 4th back Deledio > midprice player (adcock example) to free up the cash to upgrade your last rookie mid which im not confident in at all.

We need more time to determine which rookies will be good in the mids. Im keeping a strong eye on the brisbane boys, plenty of room in the side, should get games.

Ali Smith must also be considered strongly my bias may get in the way slightly.

Yea thats true but he just completed about 60% of game time against the tigers in Alice. 2 more NAB Challenge hitouts to go before the season proper he should be cherry ripe

Stats dont lie in dream team mate, you cant argue he averaged 95 last year playing with half a groin. Name me any midfielder thats $395 000 or less and we will see who averages the most come round 22.

the other reason to mention Boak - if fit - is Port's first bye isn't until round 12 and their first half of the year is pretty soft. by that stage he'll be really primed for an upgrade.

Boak is a damn good player too.
