What does "x factor" even mean?

My definition is a player who can create something from a half chance. Something out of nothing if you will. Duffy and Croz both showed that ability tonight.

We were toiling away trying to manufacture goals with no success - then we get the ball into Croz's hands and he slots one from 50 off two steps, then slots another under pressure around the corner off one step after setting up the receive himself. That's X-factor.

Then Duffy comes on and slots one outside 50 off a couple of steps with his first kick, before showing a touch of class with a shimmy and handball through traffic to set up another goal.

X-factor = creative players. As opposed to workmanlike role players.

It's such a shame Duffy was injured throughout Sonny's absence, he might have established himself as a regular by now. In the wafl I was critical of him always trying to do the amazing rather than playing the percentages but sometimes the game calls for a touch of arrogance. Let's face it, Duffy came on and did tonight what we all hoped Sylvia might have done. He could be a good impact player for us and might revel in the sub role while he builds his fitness.

Great find. :thumbsu:

Not really. I think it was him who both the Dockers and Eagles were looking at and wanted. The Eagles told him they were going to take him with a certain pick and him being the good Freo boy he is went and told the club so we took him first. A lot of the good finds from the WAFL come from the recruiters being able to see them week in week out.

Well yeah. He's a good player = great find... anyway.

Says a lot about the culture of the Perth Football Club. Wasn't good enough according to his coach at the time.
There is a bit more to it than that. I don't think talent was the issue.

Damian McMahon was the coach involved. Max and his family thought East Freo would be better for his development.

Why he was at Perth in the first place is what is unusual as Rossmoyne is in the East Freo zone.

Like a tiger . . .

He was great! Hats off to Max!

I think RTB alluded to it the other day when He said that he had finally decided to dedicate himself to footy or words to that effect.

He was good tonight, but think he did benefit a bit coming on as the sub against some tired players, I've seen Taberner also have impact as the sub, so whilst he was good I would not get carried away. Deserves to play next week as sub again imo. Also props to Crozier he played well.

Taberner has never played as the sub.

Occasionally you see players who come along and you can see they've go what it takes to play AFL off the bat. They may turn into stars, they may turn into fringe players - occasionally they throw it away with ill discipline or whatever, but you can see that they've got the temperament, body and mental "footy brain" to play at this level.

Duffy showed that tonight. That poise and confidence and decisive thinking in a heated game is gold. Great debut.

FWIW, unless we have other injury concerns that allow him to stay in (Balla?, Fyfe :(), I reckon he'll drop out for Walters next week. He was good, had his time, but he wont be the first to have a good start only to sit out the following week due to the bona fide star coming back. Hopefully this taste spurs him on even more, he builds an elite fitness base over the off season and we have a gun next year pushing for regular games.

Hope it turns out better than Simpson for Mayne

After tonight, he needs to stay in the side. I'd rather us go for the mosquito fleet with genuinely talented, match-ready forwards rather than stick to our traditional "kick it to Pav" structure.

The most important thing is that he completely justified his somewhat high selection, really left field selection but there is genius within the madness there. Appears to have the right temperament for top level footy.

I was never a fan, I wanted him delisted, and in terms of his person I was never a fan.

I've removed much of what you wrote as i want to address this part.
Do you know Max or are you going on what has been said & written about him?
I don't know him, but I know lots of people who do. His former boss whose son was my son's best friend used to be my assistant coach when i coached the boys in year 4.
Max's former boss is originally a Vic & played ressies 4 geelong, before moving 2 Perth via adelaide. He played sanfl & wafl & knows his footy. His family are geelong thru & thru, & when Max was drafted Max went out of his way to get a whole stack of Freo gear for his boss's 4 sons, the next day.
I would have met him & gotten to know him if we hadn't moved to Melbourne at the start of last year, so I can only go by what people who know him well say about him.
His former boss thinks so highly of him that he flew over to go to the game despite having a trip planned here with his whole family (wife & 4 sons under 14) in 2 weeks time to see the cats play the hawks.
In conclusion, I reckon Max is good value, both on & off the field
