Movie Dune

Enjoyed it. Never seen the previous or read the books. Think the dialogue at times was hard to distinguish but apart from that, visually stunning and I really enjoyed the world being quite sparse and boring, instead of fancy lasers and lights like Star Wars.

Pretty sure the book will be covered in two movies. There is also intended to be a spin-off TV/streaming series focused on the Bene Gesserit.

Bumping an old one here, but I FINALLY made it to the end of Dune after trying 2-3 times. The last 30 minutes was an utter slog but I enjoyed the final 5 minutes of the film as a whole.

As someone who knew nothing about Dune, here are my thoughts:
  • Visually STUNNING. Has to be the best looking movie I've ever seen. Sounded great too.
  • 75% of the movie is confusing and convoluted and I'm not the best at following movies at the best of times. I tried to keep up but yeah some of it was quite difficult.
  • The actor that played the mum was just off. Something about her I didn't like. Oscar Isaac is just the ****ing man however.
  • I didn't know the names of any of the characters apart from Paul. Unfortunately the film didn't do enough to make me care about them enough.
  • Sandworms and the Thopters were cool AF.
  • The action was decent without being amazing.
  • Josh Brolin's character just disappeared. I missed what happened to him.
  • Paul and his mum at the end bored me to tears. Wish they shortened that part, or made it better.
  • Baron was cool but I didn't really understand his motives.

Overall I would give it a 6. It did enough to maaaaaybe get me to watch part 2 in the cinemas, with just how good looking this movie was.

Its a little weird to me it took 3 times to get through a movie you give a six...

A couple of your queries are pretty clearly answered in the film too.

  • 75% of the movie is confusing and convoluted and I'm not the best at following movies at the best of times. I tried to keep up but yeah some of it was quite difficult
House Atredies is told to go and manage Arrakis and its production of spice by the Emperor. Meanwhile the Emperor has also asked House Harkonnen to vacate the planet and return to overthrow and kill House Atredies because the Emperor is worries about House Atredies growing support in the Galaxy.
  • The actor that played the mum was just off. Something about her I didn't like. Oscar Isaac is just the ******* man however.
Rebecca Ferguson. Personally i love her and think shes great and was great in this.
  • I didn't know the names of any of the characters apart from Paul. Unfortunately the film didn't do enough to make me care about them enough.
Pretty rough. Duncan Idaho is pretty boss, Gurney is cool and has a cool name, Duke Leto ditto. Baron Harkonnen and Stilgar all pretty memorable and important.
  • Josh Brolin's character just disappeared. I missed what happened to him.
This is fair. I suspect NOT seeing his fate tells you what you need to know.
  • Paul and his mum at the end bored me to tears. Wish they shortened that part, or made it better.
Pretty important to the character. Hes telling her his vision and his visions. Its character development and im pretty sure a decent chunk of foreshadowing.
  • Baron was cool but I didn't really understand his motives.
Money and power. The Emperor asked him to knife House Atredies and hes doing it to keep the spice production in his remit.

Trailer for part 2

Edit: Can I just state how frustrating it is watching reaction vids to this trailer when the viewers haven't read the book. They don't even recognise Feyd or half of what's going on. Urgh!

Dune will become the Lord of the Rings of the 2020s. This will be the first film i'll return to cinemas at midnight to watch.

Don't think i've done a midnight screening since TLJ (which i nearly threw up in).

Melbourne is the only place in Australia that has an IMAX now.

The Sydney one is meant to reopen soon - according to their website late 2021 so should be any day now!!

(But I've seen articles elsewhere in the last couple of months saying it's expected to be soon.)

I hope they get it completed by November. Seeing Dune in IMAX would be epic.

I watched it for the first time last week and enjoyed the film, but didn't love it. But I enjoyed it enough that I'll definitely try to see the second one at the cinema on the big screen. I thought the casting was really fantastic and got a bit of a man crush on Oscar Isaacs as Leto. I tried to explain it to my wife and showed a picture of him in character and she scoffed haha.

Without knowing the source material (except for playing Dune 2 to death with my best friend who lived down the road from me), I couldn't help but see a LOT of parallels to Star Wars. It's wild how many similarities there was!

I used to work in sync licensing for advertising- tv, online, and radio. I didn’t do big budget movies but I was curious and googled a little and most estimates I saw put a placement in a trailer around 100,000-200,000usd which is the majority of the trailer’s budget. There would be a royalty payment for streams/reproductions too.

I’d see fees of 30-60k for tv and online ads regularly in Australia, so that kinda seems right.

The actual artists who record the cover would get * all though.
That last sentence depends though. Whenever our band got syncs, there were always two "sides" to the sync - the master side (for the owning of the recording) and the publishing side (for the songwriting royalties) that was paid 50/50. So for covers like this, Pink Floyd would get the publishing side and whoever owns the recording of the cover would get the master side. For a lot of artists, that would be the record label (and the artist would get a cut of that based on whether they'd recouped their record deal etc), but for independent artists they would've gotten the full master side themselves.

Yeah that's the thing, a lot of covers used for trailers are recorded by session musicians specifically for the trailer. No record label involved etc, film studio would own the publishing in that case I suppose. There's also dudes out there that spend all day making covers hoping someone snaps them up for their next trailer.

I had a few syncs too, 20 years ago, I think it was a Nissan car commercial :)

We somehow got a Jeep one in Canada haha.

And good point about the studio hiring the session musicians and owning the master side. That's pretty ingenious really.

I watched Dune over the weekend without any knowledge of the books and these were my main problems with the movie as well.

The arrival to where they harvest the spice to the father dying was the most interesting part for me but it went by all too quick for me compared to other parts which dragged on especially the last 20 minutes.

And I don't think it was explained very well why the Emperor wanted them destroyed.

Other than that I thought it was pretty good.
