Movie Dune

And I don't think it was explained very well why the Emperor wanted them destroyed.

Other than that I thought it was pretty good.

I expect part 2 will fill in the part of the emperor as he makes his first appearance along with his daughter. Both of which are important to the overall plot.

I'm a bit bummed out that part 2 has been delayed until next year because of the writers strike. The movie should be ready to go by now albeit post production so the delay is a bit baffling.
The issue is the unavailability of the stars, to promote the movie at the time of release. Note that the strike includes banning the performers from promoting movies from the big studios. The producers have spent tens (hundreds?) of millions on the movie, and they (understandably) want to maximise the movie's financial return.

Releasing it without any promotion, or minimal promotion (without the stars - due to the strike), is likely to result in the movie earning hundreds of millions of dollars less than it would with proper promotion.

****, has it?

That sucks :(

Agreed - I feel like the motivation wasn't clearly communicated, but should be easy to address.

Ive never read the books and did see the Sting codpiece movie once when i was about 10.

Is the emperors motivation that complicated?

The emperor is concerned about House Atredies growing influence and favour in the galaxy, he wants to wipe em out before they get big enough to challenge him (i assume its a him).

Are people saying that wasnt explained well or that they want more depth than that?

Dune Part 1 movie never covered much of anything of the Emperor and the system of power in the Dune universe other than the Atredies point of view.

I am expecting Part 2 to delve deeper considering the Emperor and the Princess will feature in this movie.

The Sting version of Dune, directed by David Lynch in 1984 did cover some of that aspect early in the movie. The extended cut (disowned by Lynch) also featured a prologue to explain more of the back story.

There is also a SCI-FI Channel, 3 part miniseries done back in the 2000's which is pretty faithful to the book.

Is the emperors motivation that complicated?

In short, yes.

The emperor is the leader of many aristocrat families which governs the known universe. However he does not have ultimate power and can be replaced if another family is more appealing.

Ultimate power resides with the Spacing Guild who controls all space travel. However they cannot manage the universe, so they employ the emperor to their bidding. They also require the emperor to manage Spice Melange production on Dune as this substance is essential to their operations.

The emperor then hands over responsibility of production to another house (Harkonnens) whilst they govern the universe.

The complication comes when spice production is interrupted and the Spacing Guild seeks answers. The Harkonnens have their sights on the emperor-ship also but do not make this plan known to anyone. They see sabotaging the emperor as their ticket to his seat.

The emperor sees the Atredies as a bigger threat than the Harkonnens as they are likely to be favored by the Spacing Guild if he gets deposed. The emperor then chooses to hatch a plan with the Harkonnens to eliminate the Attredies family discretely since the Harkonnes and Atredies are mortal enemies.

The rest of the houses wouldn't suspect the plot of the emperor intentionally wiping out family and not allying against him in the future.

I think youve missed my point a bit (or i didnt articulate it that well).

A bunch of people have said they dont think the Emperors motivations were clear. His motivations for knifing house Atredies i thought were made really clear (concern of their growing power and influence). Im asking if people were unclear about that OR saying they need something a bit more well rounded?

All the stuff in the spoilers tags was really interesting, thanks for sharing (I haven't read the books or wached any of the other adaptations). Obviously none of that was covered in the movie, but I agree with this:

It's not as nuanced or in-depth as the books actually are, but I've got no idea why people are confused about it. It was pretty clear ad obvious to me too.

Excited for Dune 2. It's been a couple of years since the last good sci-fi release

I’m excited for this. I really know stuff all about Dune but I watched the 2021 release a year ago and liked it. The trailers for this one look great. What’s the best place to read what it’s all about and fill in any blanks?

I highly recommend Youtube channels Quinn's Ideas and Alt Shift X for Dune content. They both delve deeply into the books and film adaptations.

The great thing about the new movies is that it doesn't spend too much time in delving too deeply into the lore, so it's approachable to any audience.

However, if you do take the deep dive into the lore via the books, then there is so much depth to explore in this universe.

Keep in mind that this universe inspired the creation of Star Wars and Game of Thrones.

i know nothing about dune, but watched the first movie and enjoyed it. yes at times had no idea who was who and who were the bad guys. dune looks bright
It's going to be interesting how far Hollywood goes with this universe as there are 3 more books to adapt to end the Atredies storyline.

God Emporer of Dune will not make a good movie I'm afraid if they choose stay faithful to the source material.

The proposed tv series based on the Benegeserit sister hood could be interesting.

All these reviews referencing this sequel, is like LOTR twin towers, the dark knight follow up and empire strikes back of the franchise.

The story plot supports this build up & crescendo and the right director is in the seat to deliver it. Will it capture the normies out there though?

Disenfranchised fans from MCU & Star Wars may or may not latch on to this universe depending on how fatigued they are with their current rubbish.
