i know nothing about dune, but watched the first movie and enjoyed it. yes at times had no idea who was who and who were the bad guys. dune looks bright

Arrakis and Atreidas was still confusing to me as which was which when I watched it the second time.

Should have just called Arrakis 'Spiceland'

Capital city of Arrakis is Arrakeen just to make it more fun for you. Later in the book series, it became Rakis & Keen respectively.

Atreides, is a family name based on the planet Caladan. They have had no prior association to Arrakis.

Got tickets for Gold Class for one of the Saturday sessions. Looking forward to it. As luck would have it, the book is lying on the floor in my bedroom. Should pick it up and read it again ahead of watching it.

I prefer Metacritic to get a truer understanding of the critics views as the Tomatometer is just how many of the critics gave it a thumbs up vs a thumbs down.

Metacritic has it at 80%, which is obviously a bit of a step down, but they all seem to agree that it's a feat of film-making and a really ambitious attempt to mix the box office spectacle with complexity. Which makes me very excited to see it!

I might have to check out of the thread for a little while before I get a chance to see it. I'm booked in for surgery tomorrow and won't be able to get to the cinema for a little while.

I think the deal was - you can see our movie in advance if you promise to say it's the bestest movie ever.

Yeah, let's not forget early reviews of The Flash said it was one of the all time great superhero movies.

With that caveat, it's all pretty promising. This probably will go down a little but an 80 on Metacritic is better than the score the first one received. I am looking forward to next week!

Yeah always happens when MCU or Disney is involved, especially when they want to push "THE MESSAGE". But Dune is not tied to the SGW movement and has a bit of free reign to remain true to the source material.

I may be biased as I am a Dune nut, but I think this will definitely rate in the top 5 Sci-Fi movies of all time after its all said and done.

Seems a common complaint is
that it ends clearly leading into Dune Messiah and isn't a quite satisfying ending. But not too surprised given Villeneuve said he wanted to do three films.

Yep WB didn't know the IP they were handling so they couldn't market it as a "trilogy".

I recall a few WB people saying it was I don’t recall any critics doing that?

Loved it, well done Denis. Captured the essence of the book with out too many crucial compromises.

Some sections felt slow, some sections went too quick but them are the compromises you must make for a film to be relateble to the general audience.

Will it capture the imagination of Star Wars and MCU fans? Maybe, but only the ones who want a deeper, darker drama over an action adventure.

This film is not for everyone and some may find the story boring, confusing or too complex considering the source material.

I always felt this universe deserved a GoT style TV series over the movie to capture the density of the story being told. But we would not have gotten the cinematic experience that Denis could deliver on the big screen.

Looking forward to Dune Messiah to round off the trilogy and also keen on the TV show focusing on the Bene Geserit sisterhood.

I am thankful I grew up in a time when you usually had read the book before the movies started getting made. This iteration of Dune so far has been good. It's going to get denser. ;) I too vote for the longer format ala GoT.

I thought the pacing very much reflected the pacing in the book.

I'm personally not a huge fan of Herbert's writing at all (as opposed to his ideas) and was I was actually hoping DV was going to tidy up some of the pacing issues.

I discovered the 84 film and then the 2000 Scify mini series before reading the books.

Im not much of a book reader in general but loved the story enough to want to know more.

It going to be interesting how far they take the Dune universe considering how weird it progressively gets.

Children of Dune and God Emporer of Dune could be adapted but would need to be heavily modified to make it watchable on the big screen. I don't think the audience wants to see a giant man worm rant and rave for 3 hours about the Golden Path.

Scheduled to finish early this arvo, hopefully can leave on time and head straight to the cinema's!

Don't normally go to Events Cinema, but noticed Cinebuzz membership discount is only $1 difference to normal adult ticket prices now lol

My understanding is that Villeneuve still wants to make his TV/streaming series focused on the Bene Gesserit. Not sure how progressed the pre-production has got with it though. I don't think we'll ever see Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune or the other sequels made (possibly Dune Messiah, I suppose).

I can sort of see the legitimacy in mentions of LOTR in this film. There hasn't been a film in my opinion since then of such grandiose.

Early call but this film should sweep all the awards.

The sound design and score by Hans Zimmer goes absolutely ham and let's loose. It's electrifying.

Denis Villeneuve is the best director of our generation.
