I am an expert in the study of human nature.
Charles Darwin read this thread and cried.

I don't assume it. The draft experts have said it is not as strong this year compared to previous years. Of course that can all change because we know it's all based on potential. But some have suggested they will not be utilising late pucks this year.

You have been taken to the limit with dusty.

Lynch will break the record. He is a gun. He will go for around 1.6 million if not 1.7 in my opinion. Clubs that need a tall forward will move heaven and earth to get him.
Hang on, back the bus up Chuck. You said our teen picks were basically ratshit and the draft isn't rated. Now you're saying it's the late picks. We choose, read, we choose not to go "the full North" on Dusty. We could, but, we also understand what that means to our payment structures long term. It's a risk we aren't prepared to make for one player.
Lynch is gonna command big dollars, that we agree, but, let's just see what happens with Dusty first and the ramifications of that. That would be prudent.

Charles Darwin was a biologist. Sigmund Freuds work had not even begun to be published by the time Darwin had passed away.

Never mind, you wouldn't know the difference.

Is there really much difference between a top 4 finish or a fighting exit from the finals? I don't think so.
In the context of Richmond's recent history, there most definitely is a difference between a top 4 finish and winning a few finals. I firmly believe we have fallen into the top 4 off the back of a soft draw (Port away and GWS at home our only wins against quality opposition). We haven't proven anything yet.

Somewhere in Dusty's mind, there must be some fear that we will choke on the big stage again. Win a final or 2 and that fear, that frustrating stigma suddenly goes away...

I mean no disrespect as I value the refreshing change of some well thought out and balanced input coming from a Tigers supporter, but I think this is actually going to be the case. I agree that your side lucked in to finishing fourth and then again by drawing Geelong, who you can beat, but the party is over past this point, and I don't think Martin will be any more compelled to re-sign based upon these outcomes.

If I was a tigers person, I would be pinning my hopes on him re-signing pre finals on the back of a top 4 finish, and this is my guess as to what will actually occur.

Fair enough, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree then. I for one will still be hopeful if we don't have a decision by September 8.

What would make him choose North then?

They aren't exactly knocking the finals door down in the coming years

If it is about playing finals, then he stays at Richmond. The Tigers have surprised all (me included) but getting back into finals on the back of youth. Who knows if they have enough elite talent to win the flag, but it's clear enough that they'll be around about the top 8 for a few years to come.

NM have a long road ahead. The acquisition of Martin doesn't hide that. Too many of the good players are ageing, and too many of the younger ones are solid but not spectacular contributors. If Martin comes it will be for the money, not finals.

Primarily, the shooshka. He would also have to believe that he was going to an environment where he could be relaxed and prosper as a player, but it's the shooshka.

Martin and Kelly in our side and we not only make the finals, but we will give the top 4 a shake.

If we only land one, then I expect us to land in the 7 to 10 range in 2018.

Our list is nowhere near as bad as some seem to think, it's just that we are badly deficient in one particular area, the midfield.

Place two guns in our midfield and the exponential flow on through the side will be significant.

Dollars.
Martin has time on his side to wait for North to turn it around
And the cash isn't anything to sneeze at (300k extra a year for X amount of years).

i'd sign for North on that cash....and i hate north (Id burn the place down on my way out).
1.5 makes me think he will go. If he isn't sure he is staying at Richmond (who are top 3 and he gets along with everyone there), then i don't see what the time of reflection will provide him.
Its clear the cash is a lure.

How do you know? Richmond finished 13th last year, lost seven of their last nine and were beaten by 113 points in round 23. Now they have a great chance at a home prelim.

100% correct, that's a lot of money to turn down. North would be smart to up the offer a bit and front load it to make it a no brainer, he's a man who can set himself up for the rest of time.

No argument here, but what would it truly matter to north for the next year or two? Realistically you're not contending in that period so if it gets a player like dusty over the line then why not?
If we land Kelly as well, we'll contend.

If we were to only land Martin, we park the Kelly money for 12 months then go again for another top line midfielder and then we'll contend.

North are engaging in an aggressive reset, not a rebuild.

Surely any team with both Kelly & Martin would be a lock for finals? They would arguably be a better duo than Dangerwood and they carried Geelong to a prelim last season.
You would think so, given our major weakness this year was our midfield.

We have a Coleman medal contending forward and an AA quality full back. Add a midfield headlined by Martin, Kelly and Cunnington in between and suddenly other holes on the list become a lot less apparent.

Take Dangerwood out of Geelongs side and i'd argue that Norths current side are stronger than Geelongs.

Ben Brown would win the coleman by a long shot with Kelly and Martin in the team.
