Richmond fans, if Martin comes out and says he wants to go to a different club, obviously you will want your club to match solely so you keep your best player. But at the end of the day, if a player expresses interest in leaving - openly to the public - do you really want to keep him? Does that send the right message to your players, members, etc.?
I mean, sure, it has worked for Bryce Gibbs in the short-term, but he was contracted anyway, and might leave at the end of this year.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it might not just come down to the dollar. It may be a major reason why he leaves (if he does). At the end of the day, if he does leave it'd suck, but you will then have 1+ mill to offer Kelly or a Fyfe anyway, so it possibly isn't the end of the world if you can fill the void.
