His favourite line is "he plaayed for that free kick." Thats all i heard on saturday in the north vs sydney last quarter when everyone was going in for the ball. Half of the time the free kicks were there as well.

Haha, yeah. Mentioned it in the other thread. Even if the players go in hard for the ball he says they played for the free. Loves saying it. It's almost like he's on auto pilot and he says it without even realising now.
Also used to say "He went where angels fear to tread" a hell of a lot. Just hated the saying and he kept using it.
I dunno, so many reasons to hate Dwayne Russell. Not enough time to detail it all. Terrible commentator.

I must be the only one who doesn't have a major problem with Dwayne Russell's comments, phrases, etc.

Tell you what, he and Liam Pickering had a funny one-two tonight.
They were mentioning Leigh Matthews as saying Carey >> J.Brown, etc...
Pickering: "It's like comparing Jennifer Hawkins and Megan Gale. You'd be happy with both of them."
Russell: "Well, let's talk about that after the game .... Hey, aren't you married, Pickers?"
Pickering: (silence)
Russell: "Here's a hello to your wife and kids."
Gave me a chuckle.

Yes language changes but calling a floating pass a "SPEAR!" or a 35 metre pass "shorting it" is just inaccurate and hardly an example of evolution. He likes to throw in his catchphrases at every opportunity even when they don't reflect what's going on.
"Plays for the free" is probably his worst one. Completely subjective, assuming, and again, often inaccurate.
Dwayne to me is like the end result of programming a robot to be a footy commentator, but there were a few bugs they couldn't correct.

Had to laugh at the stupidity and inappropriateness of him talking about Duigan being a drug and alcohol counsellor, commenting that "he arrived at the club a year late". Was met with an awkward silence from the other commentators.
I just got Austar reconnected a week ago and man, I forgot how annoying Dwayne is! For some reason he feels he has to use a superlative to describe every bit of play.

What is interesting is that no other caller of the game has a thread (apart from a 6 reply BT thread) on this particular board and when you think that across both tv and radio their is probably around 24 commentators (not counting special comments) it tells you something when this thread alone has reached 17 pages.
Perhaps you could start a positive thread on Russell and see how it goes.
