yeah he has a conflict of interest, but dude, geelong are in the grand final haha who cares!

Doesn't Brian Taylor have a paid position down at Collingwood? (kicking coach)

Luke Darcy spent the whole of last year in the commentary box while still a listed player. Michael Voss was still a listed Lions player this year.

Carey was doing some work down at Carlton with Pagan while special comments on Fox games...

The list goes on and on.

Russell said tonight on radio he has a paid position with Port Adelaide. How can you put yourself up as so-called independent football commentator in those circumstances? Doesn't he understand the concept of a conflict of interest?

Probably over half of the media commentators have positions within clubs

Liam Pickering is a player manager
BT is a coach for Collingwood
Dermie & the Chief are involved on the Hawthorn Board
Gary Lyon is involved with Melbourne
James Brayshaw is on the North Melbourne Board

Just to name a few

Get over it

Pickers has no club involvement - irrelevant!
BT has a marginal (I think voluntary) skills role. What's the conflict?
Dunstall's role is voluntary and his role in the media is entirely different from Russell's. Brereton would fall into the same category if he were still a board member.
Lyon has no formal involvement with the Dees and said he wouldn't take on one. He has merely offered some unpaid help.
Brayshaw has a clear conflict.
Russell is a full-time professional journalist whose full-time occupation is to write and broadcast opinions on AFL football (other stuff too) independently. As a paid employee of an AFL football club he is clearly compromised.

two words....................Eddie.........................McGuire

Leigh Matthews is currently on Channel 10, Luke Darcy did comments while his knee was bung.

Seriously, it's no biggy

O.K my last little rant on this.

Unlike everyone else mentioned, Russell is a professional journalist paid to write/broadcast independent and objective opinion pieces. It's akin to Caroline Wilson holding a paid position at Richmond or Mike Sheahan holding a paid position at Collingwood etc. You can't be independent and objective in those circumstances. You're compromised. That's why people like Wilson, Sheahan, Smith and so on would run a mile from such a conflict.

GO CATS!

I'm confused - isn't Mike Sheahan employed by Collingwood to write puff pieces about how great the pies are every 2 days?

I am pretty sure it's purely to host function for the club and nothing else.

Sorry to bring this back to the slightly serious but some of you don't get it. Comparing Russell with Billy is apples and oranges stuff. Billy is an entertainer. He's not a professional sports journalist paid to be impartial and objective. You have to compare Russell's role with professional sports opinion writers like Caroline Wilson or Mike Sheahan - like them or not. If, for example, Wilson were to become an employee of her beloved Richmond ( which she wouldn't do because she knows what a conflict it would be) it would be a massive conflict of interest and she could no longer be considered impartial or objective. And there would be an outcry. The same would apply to other serious opinion writers if Sheahan, Smith and co were to do the same.

Please don't compare entertainers with professional sports journalists/opinion writers. Russell should not work for a club whilst he fulfills his present writing/ broadcasting roles.

Virtually every commentator has a link to some club. There's also the "one offs" they do for clubs such as MCing their functions.

I tend to agree that it isn't right but it's hard to avoid. Some hide it better than others though.

I do get it but don't agree. Brayshaw is on the North board. Eddie is collingwood president....

Again, you're comparing apples with oranges. McGuire and Brayshaw are entertainers. They are not professional journalists paid to write/broadcast critically, fearlessly, independently on AFL football. As I have said you have to compare him with someone like Caroline Wilson. How could she write fearlessly, critically, independently if she were an employee of Richmond paid to advance there interests.
