If a team that finished below us bids for Buckley with their first round pick, we have to use our first round pick.I thought it was "next available" though. Meaning if we had pick 21 (second round), and pick 38 (third round), and a club used their second round (23 overall), we could still throw up our 3rd rounder ...

How do they choose the kids for AIS, are they the kids who they think are the best or what?
No, they take the worst ones possible and try to turn them into future AFL superstars
No, that's Richmond you're thinking of.

Does barry mitchell boy qualify for f/s
If he did end up at Carlton, would his locker be on the opposite side of the ground to everyone else's?

Which is why the Bulldogs fans are laughing.Good year to have father/son pick really.

CARLTON is likely to commit to drafting the son of former club great Jimmy Buckley more than 18 months ahead of schedule, or risk losing him to the incoming western Sydney team.
The Blues have indicated an interest in signing Dylan Buckley, who turns 17 today, under the father-son rule in the 2011 draft. But the club will be forced to make an early - some would say premature - assessment of Buckley jnr because, if they do not commit to him this year, Greater Western Sydney can list him as one of its 12 elite 17-year-olds.

And so on and so forth...

Based on hear say.
The AFL are reactionary idiots for even allowing other clubs to bid for a Father-son pick and get a player outside of the draft.
Only the club the father played for should have access to a F/S pick.
Would the official records say Pick 23, Dylan Buckley, Father-Son selection, Richmond if we didn't want to match a bid?
Another club could have cheated Geelong out of Selwood if they had bidpick one to five to bid for Hawkins.
IIRC, Hawkins was rated as a top tenner in 2006.
Geelong would have had to use pick six if Port had bid for Hawkins, but only pick 23 if West Coast had bid for Hawkins with the Mitch Brown selection. The other clubs could snooker the club if they know he's worth it and push that club out of the first round.
That could cause another quality player to drop to their selection.
Just like Murphy being drafted with pick one after opting to nominate for the draft.
Just like with tanking and priority picks, the AFL only changed the rules because clubs won a flag after receiving quality players with priority picks and father-son selections.
The AFL just make it up as they go along.![]()
If another club bids for a Father-son pick, by rights, the AFL should allocate draft pick to the club who has first and last rights on him as a F/S pick.
That might make clubs think again if they want to bid.
The rule becomes a joke and contradiction if other clubs are allowed access to another team's F/S talent.
Second round pick at the most to continue the spirit of the F/S rule or scrap it all together.
*end of rant*
Did I hear right?
Swann on Dylan on SEN; He is ours

The AFL has ruled that the father-son rule takes precedence over players who can be listed by GWS or Gold Coast, but those father-son prospects still have to put through a draft and ''bid'' - with the team that nominates him having to ''match'' the bid.
