He's been a gun for a few years now, he's only being noticed now because the media recognise him without Rance there. Truth is if it wasn't for early hamstring issues he's be a lot more prominent, has always been our best pure 1 on 1 defender.

This thread was started last year, way before Rance was injured, so not necessarily the case. Astute footy followers always had him in very high regard.

I remember his first 11 games before he got injured as probably the best 11 games from a young defender I could remember. He read the ball in the air so well and got his fist to everything. He lost a lot of confidence with those years of injury. Now that ability to read the ball in the air has turned into marking power, which all the great defenders have. And he plays on all the best small forwards as well.

Well of course that is the case because now he is the number 1 defender for a top contending team. If Rance was still playing Grimes would still be just as good a player but get less media because he’d have to share the media and obviously the better player gets more. Just because rance got more media doesn’t mean people didn’t value grimes very highly and the amount of media doesn’t determine the value of a player.

Give the great man a new lease of life and throw him into the forward line. He should know a few tricks after years of playing on tall forwards.

Nothing to lose, give it a go, his defensive and team-first intent may help Lefau and presumably Koschitzke to have a better impact. Won't be out of play when the ball hits the ground like some tall forwards.

He was a great player, but father time has caught him now. Will retire at some point this year, hopefully with a farewell game and leaves a lot of great memories.

Anything we do is unlikely to work. Grimes would be a decent chance to keep an aerial interceptor honest at least. Try to get Dusty and Lefau one out against their opponents.
