t Kilda defender Dylan Roberton has today announced his AFL retirement, effective immediately.

The decision comes following a two-month hiatus during which Roberton weighed up his post-football options.

“I’ve come to a point where I need to put my family and future first,” Roberton said.

Football has been a huge part of my life for such a long time and I’ve never lost my passion for the game.

“But after lengthy discussions with my family and on the advice of my doctors, I’ve made the extremely hard decision to hang up the boots.

“I’m so grateful for the support of the entire St Kilda Football Club, particularly Dr Tim Barbour and Tony Brown, whose support and friendship has been unwavering over the past three years in particular.

“To my teammates and coaches at both St Kilda and Fremantle, thank you for giving me the opportunity to live out my dream.

“To the Saints fans, thank you for all your support and for embracing me as soon as I arrived at the club.

“Lastly, to Amy, the kids and all my family and friends, thank you for your support.”

Dylan Roberton played 92 games in red, white and black after beginning his AFL career at Fremantle.
Senior Coach Brett Ratten said the club would continue to support Roberton.

“Dylan is a much loved and well respected member of our club,” Ratten said.

“He should be really proud of how he has dealt with everything life has thrown at him – it’s a real credit to his character.

“During his time off training, he’s really embraced the challenge of supporting the football program.

“Dylan has a great footy brain and he’ll remain an asset to our program for the remainder of 2021.

“He has our full support in this decision, and Dylan, Amy, Boston, Henry and Pip will always be part of the Saints family.”

Roberton was drafted to the Fremantle Football Club with pick 49 in the 2009 AFL Draft.

After playing 37 games with the Dockers, he joined the Saints at the end of the 2012 season.

Roberton quickly became a staple of St Kilda’s backline, going on to play 92 games in the red, white and black.

Roberton capped off a career-best season in 2017 with selection in the extended All-Australian squad and a runner-up placing in the Trevor Barker Award

A great shame. All the best Dylan.

2017 we're on the rise, Robbo 2nd B&F, All-Australian squad.

Four games later he's done. Not through injury or ill behaviour either.

He played 92 games for the club. Thanks to his malady, eight games short of Father-Son eligibility. In the opinion of this correspondent, yet another reason it should be gotten rid of entirely.

An extra 20 virtual points for the first person to correctly identify his preferred kicking foot.

As good of a player as he was, he's an even better person. Terribly disappointed he didn't get to go out on his terms but I look forward to seeing a long and successful career in the football industry if that's the path he chooses to go down.

I was always struck by how much of a family man Dylan was from very early on in his life. Giving up something you love to your very core, and that you are good at is not an easy choice, and I applaud his commitment to his family and his health. It seems he has a strong nurturing streak running through him which probably lends to any coaching and development aspirations he has. I hope he lives a long happy life and finds great success in the next phase of his career, and I particularly hope that success is at the Saints.

As Fremantle supporter, I would like to wish Dylan all the best for his future away fromthe game.
He was a well respected young man at Fremantle, and I am sure had hestayed with us he would have had a load of success.
His rise atthe Saints was enormous.I watched a lot of his games and took note of how he played. His contribution to the Saints led himinto the leadership group.
Well played Dylan and all thre best for the future.

Very sad to see this, but it did seem inevitable. Was a terrific player for us when we were a poor team. Unfortunate he couldn't share in it when we got stronger. And 8 games short of the ton.

Good luck to Dylan. All the best for the future.

A terrific player in a very tough time for the club. I feel for him that he didn’t get the run at it which he deserved. It also reflects the cruel nature of the game that he misses our decent years after enduring the difficult ones.

Most importantly though, I am happy for Robbo and his family that he is healthy and can live a normal life.
