was reading the Q&A on the AFL website with kevin sheehan, the question was asked by someone, of all the later draft picks who would be the player most likely to have an impact in 2010, sheehans response was dylan roberton as he is training the house down and is an extremely talented backman. was pleasantly surprised with these comments, from what i have seen and heard, he has great skills, is a good defensively minded player. what is peoples views on the kid? hopefully we have a future key backman in the fold :thumbsu:

I confess in my excitement about Fyfe and possibly Houghton I haven't given a lot of though to Roberton. His bio sounds excellent and I note he is yet another draftee with outstanding aerobic and endurance capability. Compares himself to Andrew Mackie which I like the sound of. We are going to be a very hard team to outrun at Subi.

His bio is impressive, but if he's a 6 foot 3 defender with leadership skills, good pace and excellent skills why was he still available late in a shallow draft? Reading his profile on the clubs website he sounds like Marcus Drum but with superior pace/endurance. :thumbsu:

Don't ya know dom that we had him rated as the 3rd best player in the draft and were amazed when he fell to us?

5th best Esti, the previous best 4 in the draft fell to us as well.

Fingers-crossed it works out for the young fella. Training the house down eh? Has not featured a heap in observers who have attended training and posted on this forum yet. Hope he has a good source. Getting a debut this season would be a good achievement.

Great endurance, at the first training session I saw Ibbo (our best middle distance runner) had to dig deep to beat him in a 400m (or thereabouts) race. Really glides over the park, good long stride.

Very composed and unflustered in the one-on-ones.

At this early stage do you agree with his self-likeness to Mackie at Geelong? Do you see the potential to become genuine KPP material?

My limited observations of him at training are that he has got great running capacity and would give Ibbotson a run for his money over the 400m & beyond.
Beautiful kicking style with pin point accuracy.
Will need a season at least to fill out.

Got to love the sound of that! It sounds like in the future that our backline could become our greatest strength. Outstanding news when you think of what we were looking at 2 years ago.

Excellent!:D:thumbsu:

Oh, and do you also see him potentially pushing for selection in 2010? It surprised me getting a backman named as most likely to have an impact this year for Freo.

sheehan wasnt just saying for freo. he was saying out of all the draftees, of the later picks roberton would be most likely to play and have an impact. high praise i think :thumbsu:

Is he the tall kid that usually trains in a white cap? I have mistaken him for Dodd on a number of occasions even though I realise Dodd is restricted to just running atm.

He is very much an Andrew Mackie type player. A rebounding tall defender capable of playing on tall or small. Looks good, skills are impressive. Can't wait to see him in action.

Tough questions. Mackie to me is similar to the Selwood brothers in how well they all use the handpass as an attacking weapon; I don't recall how Roberton performed on this measure. But like Mackie he has good disposal by foot and also keeps his balance well.

As a thought though, is Mackie a good enough benchmark? I know that he had injuries but he was dropped for poor form on more than one occasion IIRC.

Re a genuine KPP, I think he definitely has the potential to step up and replace McPharlan when he retires. But as East Freo points out, he needs to build up properly - at least one season, possibly more.

One week when I was there I was asking about Buco & was told he was wearing the white cap.

Last week was when I really noticed how good his kicking style was but as I have mentioned earlier he is a good season or two away from getting body AFL ready

Absolutely, if Roberton ever gets near Mackie's level then we will have done remarkably well with that draft pick. Mackie is not really a KPP, but nonetheless a genuinely top level performer. I'd say he would have finished quite high (i.e. top ten in a side full of stars) in Geelong's B&F counts over the last few years.

Roberton layed a great tackle on Pav forcing Pav of the ground and into the rehab group next session, obviously stronger than he looks.Has been training well and would be inline for a nab birth, fingers crossed as would love to see him in match conditions ,fantastic prospect( but then again anything new in purplelooks like a fantastic prospect to me)

Wow? For a combination of attacking and densive skills wrapped up in a running, tall defender I would be scratching my head to think of someone who would rate higher than Mackie. By comparison, we usually choose between MJ, Mundy and Thornton, and Mackie is better than any of those by a fair way. MacPharlin at his best.

I cannot recall Mackie being dropped in the past few years. Perhaps when he was young and developing. He was drafted a bit like Ibbotson. Plucked a little unexpectedly. A little early. A little young. A little skinny. And in the same way, the development was slow in his early years.
