Cool story bro!

Now if he didn't play for Freo, what would your real opinion of him be?
What about it is a story? Please point out the non-factual bits.
What you need to understand is not everyone here is trolling or trying to pump up players in the delusional belief that anything we say here makes the slightest difference to anything clubs do in the real world.
My post is, more than anything, a reaction against the overwhelmingly stupid, prevailing orthodoxy on this forum at this time of year that every kid in the draft is going to be a star and worth far more than good honest AFL footballers that have proven they thrive in the system and can play a role in a top level AFL side.
I am arguing that this attitude is not shared by recruiters and coaches who have to earn their money and job security by winning games of football.
I mean, how's it working out at Melbourne getting rid of all the senior players and putting all your hope in high draft picks?
Lastly it's been about 5 years now since anyone though the cool story meme was original or funny.

i am merely pointing out that an average player who HAS NOT cemented his spot in a middle of the rung team (7th-13th) would not command a draft pick in the 20's in a superdraft. I think you will find that almost all supporters of teams other than Freo will share this view.

As for the jibe at melbourne, yeah it is me who makes all of the decisions at the club

Actually you did nothing of the sort. You attempted to ridicule my post by invoking a tired meme and insinuated that my evaluation was not objective due to me having a bias toward my chosen clubs players.
I base my appraisal of Dylan on watching him at training, information gleaned from the club and his displayed ability in the games he's played.
I am still interested in which part of my original post you can point to as not factual and your subjective opinion on the merits of valuing untried speculative 17 year olds over displayed ability, proven work ethic and good character over several years in the AFL system.

Go back and read the original posts, I can't be bothered arguing with you.

Dyl is one of the few AFL players I know. He certainly hasn't requested a trade.

For the record, his strengths are he has terrific endurance, and his kicking on both sides of his body is very good. His strength and contested footy are neither a strength of a weakness. He'll never be a Lenny Hayes who throws his body around like anything, but he'll always go when it's his turn and run back with the flight of the ball.

I think the thing that will decide how good he becomes is his decision making. He's such a nice kick that every possession he tries to make something happen, and takes the "hit or miss" kick. He'll either have to become one of the best kicks in the comp in which case he'll be a very good player, or he'll have to learn when is the right time to make the "play-making" kick and when is the time to play it safe.

Like I said, he hasn't requested a trade, but he would perfectly suit coming off half-back for Hawthorn...he was a huge Hawthorn fan as a kid by the way.

Great to hear, I was keen for him to replace McPharlin in the final against Adelaide. He was very good this year and was unlucky to be dropped in a very good experienced defence. He has progressed as much as a third year player should and improved every year. I think he will finish his career (hopefully at Freo) every bit as good as Sam Fisher, Andrew Mackie or Corey Enright who give away size but make up for it with footy nous.

What has he done to show he is worth giving up a much better pick than when he was drafted?

When he was drafted he hadn't done 3 AFL pre-seasons. He was 10kgs lighter and much, much weaker. He hadn't experienced top level footy at all. He hadn't played 30 AFL games. He hadn't experienced 2 finals at AFL level. He's more mature mentally. That enough?

Anyway, I'm glad to hear that he hasn't actually requested a trade.

Dylan's a hard one to place in terms of value.

I would be sad to see him go, I think we would receive unders for him in a trade.
I hope we retain him and develop him to replace either McPhee or Johnson in the future, has more value to us than a third round draft pick or a fringe player from another club.

A team that finished 7th and handed out a hiding to the reigning premiers at the G? Get your hand off it mate.

While I wouldn't regard a 16 point win as a hiding, or this guy to be ever as good as Fisher, Mackie or Enright. I can see what the hoard of Freo supporter are trying to say about a second round pick. I think we gave up pick 40 or so for Drum a few years back so I could see something similar here if that was to happen.

And no I am not comparing Roberts to Drum as players so don't kill me for that. Same position / experience.

If he was to leave or Fremantle was to get rid of him, I think a team like Hawthorn or Geelong should have a look at him as a natural defender.
Altough one of his best mates in Ryan Bastinac plays for North Melbourne and I wouldn't mind seeing him play for North! Shown he can play seniors

Would prefer an Ibbotson or a Suban instead. No doubt he is talented but with Hibberd, Baguely and Hardingham taking up up medium defender positions I don't think he would fit in well. Not as tall as Carlise or Hurley so wouldn't be a KPD either.

Here's an interesting factoid for you. You traded pick 49 to us for Drum, which we used to pick up Roberton.

No joke.

Weird world eh?

He's a good young kid that loved his footy growing up.
He has been hard at it from a very young age and being a running defender that throws his body at it would be of some value to clubs looking to fill some voids. A possible 2nd or 3rd rounder only at this stage, but I think he should be concentrating on cementing his spot on the team before making demands.

I really like him. North could use him. I see him developing into a Hurn like kicker from the half back line.
