I'd want Robbo but only if you'll accept Gumbleton, Cale Hooker and Tayte Pears.

Could also throw in Jesse Crichton our way.

P.s. we don't want Kepler Bradley back.

Massive spud.

Would take that - Gumbleton for Roberton in a heartbeat and would also strongly consider adding Pears for Chrichton. Hooker even though he is another Perth boy you can keep.

I completely understand where you're coming from. But at the risk of sounding cliched; quality over quantity.

I'd like to see a few Young KPPs on our list as much as the next supporter, yet bar Pavlich we have never shown a great ability to identify and foster young talls.

Hopefully, this is the year that bucks the trend. I'd rather us part with an early pick/quality player and grab a Hogan, Stringer, Jacksch or Shaw than pin our hopes on yet another discard. As a stop-gap solution it's ok, but from a long-term perspective it's not gonna cut it.

We haven't done too poorly on the defensive side. Not great maybe, but we've had a few good, solid KPDs. Except for Luke, very few standouts.

Hadrill I actually thought was really good... sh!t luck through injury. Grover and Parker great competitors, but undersized. Dodd a good negator, but a terrible kick.

But KPFs... we've always struggled. It's a tougher gig up forward by the looks. As for KPFs, they cost a bit. But some pretty decent ones have been picked up in the 20s and 30s. If we draft a mid with our best pick this year, I'd hope we pick up a KP with our next.

I'm pretty sure he's joking.

If he's not... well... I don't know what's going on there.

Yeah, sorry I actually meant to write KPFs, not KPPs. We've been relatively sound at unearthing defenders like you say.

It's strange that we seem to always have had an ability to discover Rucks for very little cost in terms of picks/trades. Could argue that it's even more speculative drafting a ruck than a KPF given they probably take even longer to develop.

I know we've probably lost out in the past, but hopefully we can parlay this knack into recruiting some KPFs in exchange. Not suggesting we trade out Griff/Moller/Clarke right now, but sound list management would suggest you trade out an area of excess quality to address one of immediate need. This is what we could also be doing in developing fairly impressive midfield depth too. Interesting times ahead.

It's really nothing to do with pinning our hopes on a discard
As a standalone trade we will get pick 30-35 for Roberton if we are lucky
If we got Cook and their 3rd rounder, essentially we are accepting a downgrade of picks from 30 to 45, with the chance that we can rehabilitate a guy that went at pick 12, is 195cm, has a big tank and is good at ground level but has stagnated in the swamp of the MFC.
Because your chance of getting a gun at pick 30 is not much different from pick 45 (it's all a bit of a lottery at that stage) I reckon it's worth the risk because of our dearth of KPF, especially if we miss out on Gumby
The other left field idea I floated in another thread is to chase Retzlaff as a FA, Brisbane have delisted him presumably with the idea of Rookie listing him but why can't we chase him as a FA under the new rules, he is a promising KPF

Maybe bundle up our 2nd pick, Cats need an injection of mid aged talent as they are getting on , don't care, just get it done.

Cats are a fair chance to get Caddy. Not sure they would do too much trading.

I still think from our POV Roberton for Kersten could be a trade. Where exactly would Kersten fit for them? I think Roberton is a better fit for them, and Kersten a better fit for us.

Up there with one of the stupidest comments I've seen.

Abuse is not really the way discussion boards work. Typically they are an exchange of opinions. That way you get to learn something. Bu that aside, if that is up there with the stupidest comments you have seen, you must live a truly rarefied existence.

Fair call, was just in a pretty bad mood and unfortunately took it out on you. Not going to make things worst, so I apologize for that.

I shouldn't imagine we'd be remotely interested in Cripps. Ross had the opportunity and chose not to play him at St Kilda. Now he has much better young players at his disposal.

Unfortunately, it would seem it is very, very ignorant.

Ross was a big wrap for Cripps and in the preseason after we drafted him Ross kept talking him up as someone who could come straight in and play from R1 the following season, which was the first time I think Ross had ever talked up someone as young as him like that.

This what someone on our board (Aussiethunda, known as stkildathunda on other boards) wrote about him last year:

"Cripps made his AFL debut for St Kilda in the Round 6 loss to Adelaide. Cripps kicked 7 goals in his 4 games and has been dubbed the Saints "supersub" as in those 4 games he started or was subbed in all them. In his four AFL matches Cripps has averaged 41% game time which equates to less than seven complete quarters on the ground which makes it a more remarkable effort. In his four games he averaged 4.0 kicks, 2.5 handballs and 0.8 marks per game.
Cripps picked up a calf injury in StKilda's Round 9 win against Melbourne, which was later diagnosed as compartment syndrome, which required surgery and meant he was expected to miss the rest of the season. However Cripps was able to get back out onto the park to play a handful of games in the VFL late in the year.
After losing 10 kilograms in November 2010 & being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes shortly after being drafted it has been a great effort for Crippsy to manage his diabetes superbly and simultaneously adjust very well to being an AFL footballer, enabling him to make his AFL debut early in his first season.
You can really tell why he St Kilda Football Club rate Cripps so highly and given him the honor of becoming the first player to wear the Saints number 35 guernsey since two-time Brownlow Medalist & club legend, Robert Harvey."

So he played 4 games that year by R9 and acquitted himself really well in them, being subbed on in all 4 and kicking 2 goals in 3 of the 4 games, despite only playing for about a quarter in each of those games. Was dubbed the "super-sub" on St Kilda boards and we were really excited by what he showed, especially his terrific pace, which he regularly used to advantage. In the other game he played he was again subbed on at about 3/4 time and again kicked a goal in the quarter or so he played.

He then developed the compartment syndrome after R9, which pretty much put him out of contention again for the rest of the year, less than a year after losing all that weight and being diagnosed with diabetes, so he did really well to play at all that year, showing the character, attitude and resilience he has.

But lets not let the facts get in the way of any more good stories. :thumbsu:

I remember when Cripps came on as the sub in the St Kilda game this year and had about 3 of the easiest opportunities to kick goals from about 10 metres out, in order to snuff out an unlikely Freo win and he duffed 100% of them.

Cool player Bro. :thumbsu:

So you judge someone on what they did in one quarter of footy, do you, despite all the other good things they've done?

Cool judgement bro. :thumbsu:

You sound a lot like whoever it was from Hawthorn who went to watch Stewart Loewe play in a game before St Kilda recruited him, but wrote him off as being no good, because he had a shocker that day, only for Stewie to go on and play 300+ games, take the most marks of anyone in the history of the game (at least since they began keeping records), captain his club, kick over 500 goals and have a 90 goal AFL season.

For Cripps to have played any good AFL footy at all in his first two seasons, after what he's been through in the last couple of years is a terrific effort and if you don't see that you don't see much. Judge him on a quarter of footy though, that's really wise. :thumbsu:

Is this the Freo board? Ha, I didn't even realise that, I just saw someone mention the fact that we were supposedly the club most interested in Roberton (on the trading board) and googled him and this is the first thread that came up in google and thought it was probably another thread on the trading board (like all the other ones there about anyone who wanted out of their club).

Still, no harm in setting the facts straight, especially if there is still a remote chance you might get Cripps yourselves.

Personally, after reading this thread, to see if Roberton would be of interest to us, as suggested, I doubt we'd be interested in him, as we have a heap of options for the HBF already (in fact too many) and many of them are around his height.

Ok, I'll go on what I have seen of him this season; yep, still not a very good player.

Hope you're ok with that :thumbsu:

That's better and it's true, he really struggled in the first half of the season, but went back to the VFL and had some really impressive games there and was brought back into our seniors and finished off the season much better.

If all that physical shit is behind him now and he's learned how to deal with the diabetes I expect another pre-season will do wonders for him and that he'll be a lot better next year. Many his age struggle in the 2nd year at an AFL club, even if they haven't had to deal with all he dealt with, as you are no doubt aware. They don't call it "2nd year blues" for nothing.

That's all I have to say about this.
