Dylan Roberton

He's definitely serviceable. I mean, a club on the decline (Saints, Bullies) could surely have him. He wouldn't cost much, and he'd be a good stop-gap between the old brigade and the new draft picks.

Really don't want to see him get delisted and not picked up by a club. Could spell the end of his footy career. :(

Surely St Kilda or Bulldogs could do with a 3rd tall defender coming cheaply.

I'd be very surprised if someone didn't at least re-draft him, we've actually some pretty handy decent depth now and it's not like we were looking to get rid of him at present.

At the moment Dylan is exactly the kind of player we'd take in the PSD.

Well then why don't we?
Seriously if we have hawked the guy around and got no takers, and he then decides to nominate for ND or PSD instead of playing VFL, he is fair game. If he is best available and we have a pick, take him. He has some talent and upside.

That wouldn't be very ethical as he requested a trad back to Vic as his missus is knocked up and he needs the support of family.

I wouldn't dare think he nominated for the draft and a club like GWS picked him up for him to relocate to Sydney. Just wouldn't be right.

I really hope we get a taker for Dylan in Victoria, even if we get a late 3rd rounder or a bag of chips. Really don't want to see him get delisted and not picked up by a club. Could spell the end of his footy career. :(

Surely the managers confirm interest with rival club(s) before going public with a desire to return home?

Would be mad for a player to knock back $100,000-$150,000 in WA to play VFL.

It's best for all parties if this didn't happen.

He wants to live in Victoria for his new family's sake and we need the senior list spot to take part in the draft. Redrafting him would be foolish.

Why, he would be nominating for the draft out of free will. He needs to make a work-life balance decision like the rest of us. If he wants a guaranteed job in Victoria play VFL next year. If he nominates for the draft, he goes where hs's drafted.

If we were really concerned about this, we should delist him. Then he is a free agent and he can choose where he goes for nothing.

We probably will end up delisting him, he would only go into the delisted FA period if we didn't bother offering him another contract, that so far remains to be seen, we may well have and he could've knocked it back.

I think we're entitled to try a get something in compensation but if next week theres still no bites then we should do a Griffin deal and just get him home to Vic regardless of the pick and give him some certainty rather than him waiting til Novemeber.

Theres also a lesson in it from a development perspective. They should be making them aware of what happens when you tap without protection. By all means tap merrily but tap wisely :D

it's as much a cultural decision that needs to be made by the club. the way we handle outgoing players will be watched by the existing list and any potential recruits. if we treat players like commodities, we can expect the list to behave like commodities e.g. give us the flick when it suits them. if we're respectful to the way we manage players, we get more of a buy-in from all concerned. we have a lot of interstate players on our list. these decisions can't be made without that taken into consideration.

We aren't treating him like a commodity, we are trying to facilitate his wish to move to Victoria. If at the end of trade period he isn't traded he can decide to take a contract with us, nominate for the draft or go to the VFL- his choice. If he nominates for the draft to chase the AFL dream he should be prepared to go anywhere - we would be doing nothing wrong or culturally insensitive to draft him under those circumstances

Caterina, you need to run the club ethically and maintain a positive culture. By all means try and help him out if he wants to stay but you need to be humane and help him home.

Agreed, I just don't see what's unethical about drafting someone that has nominated for a draft.
Of course if he made it abundantly clear he hated us and it would be a wasted pick it might be stupid to draft him but it still wouldn't be unethical.

He doesnt want to be here.

He's also not that good. There are probably better players available that we can't even fit on our list. We need a spot on the list and if we manage to get a slight pick upgrade in the process, good. Otherwise, go to the draft and PSD and see what we get.

You (and eighteen list managers so you are in good company) obviously don't rate him, but we have worse players on our list than Roberton

Possibly. But there is a very real possibility that we are going to have to delist players who are equal or better than him over the next 2 years just to participate in the drafts let alone upgrade rookies if we want to or recruit free agents etc.

Well we have to get rid of probably another 2 this year, because D. Pearce has taken Van Berlo's spot and Spurr has taken Sandilands spot. So that would be players like Crichton and Roberton. And next year we have to get rid of at least 3, which would probably be McPhee (unless he gets one more), JA and at least one other which would be a Mzungu, Pitt, Michie (if his foot doesn't improve), Lower, Suban, Bradley, Faulks, Silvagni, Pearce (if upgraded). All about Roberton's level or better. But that is just my opinion.
Freo also tend to cull harder than what most of us think necessary as well, so this is very conservative. They will probably look at free agents again and will be forced to cull around young KPP players we bring on to our list who are going to need time to develop. It is going to get very squeezy on our list, shortly.

Roberton will get picked up in the PSD if nothing else.. the guy has played some reasonable footy for a skinner 191cm player in his first 3 years. No way all 18 (or Melbourne clubs) are going to overlook him at pick 150 or whatever it is. They just know that more than likely they dont have to give anything up, so why would they
