Looks like Roberton has asked for a trade back home to Melbourne.

Can't blame a bloke for wanting to go home and as I said in another post...

I would be sad to see Roberton go as I reckon he'll become a very good footballer, especially once he puts another 8 or 10 kilos on his frame.

Having said that, what do you people reckon he's worth? He was taken at pick 49 in 2009. A bloke who is picked around that number has about a 50% (I am pulling that number out of my arse, but with some degree of confidence) chance of becoming a regular performer. Surely he's worth more than pick 49 now? Being that he's played 37 games in three seasons and shows plenty of potential at AFL level at a young age of 21 with plenty of football years ahead of him, is he worth a second round pick? Something in the thirties? Straight swap for Gumbleton?

Bit sorry to see him go, reckon he just needs more consistent AFL game time and he will be a very good defender/half back flanker and he is taller than most realise. Spurr coming in this year has taken his spot and we have more than we need in that position but he is a reliable player and should improve further. He has improved his standing from where he was drafted, should be worth a pick in the late twenties or thirties at least or a swap for Gumby.

Good luck Robbo..

doubt we'd get him for just a gumby straight swap, its trading huge potential but no continuity for continuity but a lot less potential, and clubs seem to love to trade on potential these days

Greg Denham is about as good as Hagdorn so let's not accept Robbo is out just yet.

If he does go he'll be handy to use to get someone or a useful pick. He's ready to go so he's got decent value.

I scanned through the 2009, 2010 and 2011 trade periods and found the following for comparison.

Brock MacLean was traded for pick 11
Mitch Clark - pick 12
Mumford - pick 28
B Renouf - pick 33
Ivan Maric - pick 37
A Raines - pick 44
Barry Hall - pick 47
B Peake - pick 48
Josh Hill - pick 49
Marcus Drum - pick 49

I'd be happy to swap Roberton for one of these picks...

31. Richmond
32. Essendon
33. Carlton
34. St Kilda
35. North Melbourne
36. Geelong

I know I will get shredded for this but IMO that is more a win for us than it is for the Saints.

I reckon Robbo has got wayyyy more upside than Cripps, he's courageous, strong overhead and generally a good decision maker. Only knock is that he's a touch slow. But that hasn't prevented guys like Rance performing well at the next level as a slightly underized defender. Will be disappointed if he goes and even more disappointeder ;) if we don't get a decent pick or player for him.

I can't think why you'd be shredded for that. It's a needs thing. We've got a bunch of defensive flankers and third talls. Don't have many mids/flankers with pace.

Works for me.

With some luck a pick around 30-40.

We'd be lucky to get late 30s I reckon. Early 30s would be a great deal from our side, but I don't see anyone being desperate enough to offer that... he (allegedly) wants to go home and is out of contract. Early 40s is a pretty good chance I reckon.

Would Blues/Freo do Tom Bell for Roberton??? or Kane Lucas for Roberton??

Bell is shocking user of the ball, do not want him anywhere near our 22.
There's no way Lucas would come in a straight swap for Roberton. Blues would probably demand we part with another fringe player or an early pick.

I'd like to, but Spurr's elevation, reports of Robbo buying in Langwarrin and him being un-signed altogether make a strong case for sayonara.

BTW, Langwarrin is close to Seaford, St Kilda's home base, so they would be the obvious suitor.

I don't really see why we would pursue Cripps over other options. I sincerely doubt he'd feature in our 22 at any point next season. Playing as a HFF/rotating mid he'd be behind all of our current squad members. Moreover, he'd be competing with guys like Neale, Sheridan, Crozier, Mellington, Sutcliffe, most of who have arguably already shown more promise than Cripps has in his two years at St. Kilda.

If we're serious about a premiership tilt next year, we'll be trading with an aggressive mindset.
I would only really swap Roberton (plus a pick if necessary) for a player we would see as pivotal to our hopes next year, i.e. Gumbleton.

Otherwise push for a pick in the 30s, we could pick up a nice KPD/KPF to develop in the wings to fill a void in the next few years. Sure, you can argue that it would be nice to have Cripps developing too, but remember we have to free up senior spots as well.

If we plan on picking up a few kids in the draft why not try and do it with the best picks possible, Roberton provides the opportunity to improve our draft order. After all, they're displacing some fairly good quality players, who no doubt on quite a few other lists would find themselves retained.

Or, TL;DR

Not keen on Cripps myself.

^Agree.

Been wracking my head to think of how a deal might be structured to get Cripps across to the Eagles as part of a package to secure Hogan, but I just can't see the numbers adding up.

Ditto Roberton across to Collingwood as part of a deal involving Wellingham.
