Dylan Roberton

Welcome to the Saints. The challenge is now in front of you.

Look forward to you playing for many years with us.

Can't say I'm that excited about signing Roberton, hard to see where he would fit into the team when we already have a few players who can play a similar role to him.

He was a fringe player at Freo and will probably just be a fringe player with us but obviously our recruitment staff see something in him so he may prove to be useful.

Whilst not disputing stats, Freo's base is Subi which is largely conditioned for less contests due to the size of the ground and thus less opportunity to amass stats attributed to these stats than say Sydney & ANZ/SCG. So there's simply a lot of variables which may influence how a person plays on a particular day on a particular ground.

Yeah I compared him to Silvagny and Dawson, he wins more contested ball than they do, but less 1%'s so it seems like he's more a rebounding defender than a man on man spoiler based on that.

I guess that once Fisher and Blake are gone, there will be a hole in the list.

I think you will come to like Roberton. He's really cool in a tight spot, makes good decisions and is the type that sleeps with a footy. Really good kid, sad to see him go. Good luck to him.

so no father sons then?

I'd be of the opinion he's a HBF sort who doesn't use his height as a KP sort would, would liken him more to Gilbert, who whilst not horrible in isolated 1v1's often looks entirely uncomfortable & awkward in such situations. This may change, being delisted and finding yourself at a new club may lead to reinventing yourself as a player (Mal from a prick to a bigger prick for instance :p, Lynch from a mullet wearing cry baby to Halls boxing coach :D Warwick...just...everything really...) So I'd expect, if he's retained for an extended period, natural rotation would see Gilbo move into Chip's role, Blake retiring, Chips/Simpkin moving into that key post & Roberton moving to Gilbo's old role with the then rotation of Ferg / other tallish HBF.

After reading all the comments on Roberton on the draft thread, I had to jump up and look out the window to check this morning.

Thank goodness, the world hadn't ended by the Saints recruiting Roberton.

I think all would agree that we have done a great job with recruitment over last season and this. All at the club would be aware of the clubs need for a key backman. If we haven't recruited Tippett etc etc it was seen that this is the best choice with Roberton, as they have other plans in place, for for him and the key back.

The easiest way to never get it wrong, is to never make decisions, as then you can't be wrong. Not all plans work out. We make the best choices, with the knowledge we have and then work like hell to make that choice a success.

On the surface this does seem an unusual pick, but I have seen enough unusual decisions bear fruit, for reasons that I hadn't even contemplated, to not want to start collecting firewood, for the burning of membership cards yet.

well thank god is all i can say. thank god that we now have another tough and hard tall down back.

credit where it's due now goes to big grammar man ameet bains.

When did Max H first get recognised as a "really good" full back.
I'm thinking he must have been close to 30 years old?
Simpkin is just about as big now as Max ever was, and I maintain that Max's technique for the really big guys worked better than getting into wrestling contests.
Pretigiacomo was only 193cm.

Yeah height makes it easier, but in the end its usually only 10cm or so.

it's more being able to match motors and not get burnt off on the lead, pushing blokes into pockets, spoiling and bringing it to ground.

i've seen a bit of robbo and i liken the lad to a poor man's talia.
has quality all around him and simmo, chips, neil, gilbo, gears, jimmy and sips.

thank f~(k that maxy now has something to work with!

lol, he's not a KPP?

there's no doubt in my mind that he can play key position. as has been suggested, he's bigger than his numbers say. i forgot de'sean in amongst the quality that will surround him.
that's chips, neil, jimmy, de sean, gears, simmo, gilbo, sips and robbo with newey learning the ropes.

throw in a couple of quality rucks under new instructions and a fit kosi.
throw in a functional fwd line with quality talls and smalls.
throw in a midfield.

we're back baby!

He weighs 82kg...

2009 AFL predictions:

43 - CARLTON - Dylan Roberton

DOB: 21/06/91, Height: 191cm, Weight: 80kg Recruited from: Frankston/Dandenong Stingrays (VIC)

Draft range: 24-45

The Blues are believed to be eyeing Roberton, with his rebound and flexibility from defence appealing. An excellent user of the ball, he reads the play well and has outstanding endurance. Some recruiters feel he could push into the top 30. He remains a genuine contender for St Kilda at No.32.

okay so talia is 95kg. i'd suggest that that is flattering him.

the question is, who are the teams that have damaging key fwds us and how much do their keys weigh?

freo, pav 95kg
rich, jack 90kg
wce, 90kg 100kg 100kg
north, drew 100kg
coll, trav 100kg
gee, hawk 100kg
haw, buddy 100kg

seriously, there aren't that many teams with big monsters and the ones that are out there just need double-teaming with buddy being the clear exception.
