Embattled defender Dylan Roberton has today returned to full training, completing the T1 session alongside his teammates on Tuesday afternoon.

Almost four months to the day since the 27-year-old collapsed on-field in Geelong due to an irregularity in his heartbeat, Roberton moved well as he re-joined the playing group in training for the first time since the incident.

Roberton’s return to the training track marks the end of what was at times an uncertain wait on the sidelines, with questions raised earlier in the year on whether or not the father-of-three would ever return to the football field.
Shortly after the incident in mid-April, Roberton had a device implanted to monitor his heart rate over the next three months and feed information back to club doctors and medical staff.

Restricted to light exercise, the 2017 All-Australian nominee took on an off-field role to support his teammates both on game-day and during the week.

Roberton will sit out Thursday’s T2 session due to the higher contact level and physicality involved, but will continue to gradually increase his training load in preparation for the 2019 pre-season.

Over 10 months since an on-field heart scare sent shockwaves through the football world, Dylan Roberton is back.

The star Saint confirmed on Friday morning that he’s likely to play in both JLT Community Series matches and is keenly eyeing off a Round 1 selection.

It was Round 4 last year, and the Saints travelled down the highway to face Geelong on a seemingly innocuous night at the Cattery.

But Roberton’s well-storied collapse early in the second term left a family and club shell-shocked, and threw a talented footballer’s future in doubt.

An arduous and uncertain recovery ensued, but the resilient 27-year-old is back to full health, participating in full contact training with the main group since Christmas.

In a year where the Saints fielded the second-youngest team in the competition, the loss of Roberton’s considerable experience (128 games) was keenly felt.

Compounded by the departures of Nick Riewoldt (336) and Leigh Montagna (287), as well as the long-term absence of Josh Bruce (91), the Saints were effectively down 842 games’ worth of experience for the 2018 campaign.

But the 10-month recovery also provided an opportunity for the budding coaching apprentice to gain valuable experience in the box.

“I started (coaching) a couple of years ago and I was liking it, and then last year was a good chance to sit in the coach’s box and see if I really liked it or not, and it didn’t turn me away,” he told reporters at RSEA Park.

“It’s obviously my passion for after footy, so I look forward to still obviously being a player again, but I’ll still put in some work so I can further pursue that.”

In 2017 – his last uninterrupted season of football – Roberton’s form saw him feature heavily in All Australian calculations, earning selection in the extended squad.

And the important backman is determined to not only regain that form but surpass it.

“That’s the plan, to get back to where I was,” he said.

“But I don’t want to come in and just find my way again, I want to com

Sad News today’s as Roberton steps aside for 2019 due to concerns over his heart condition.

Article.
St Kilda defender Dylan Roberton will sit out the 2019 season due to a heart condition.
A review of data from an internal device in Roberton’s chest showed a period of irregularity before it activated at the conclusion of Sunday’s JLT clash in Ballarat.
The cause of the irregularity is still unknown, with Roberton keen to explore all medical options.

The 27-year-old’s heart issue was first discovered during St Kilda’s Round 4 clash against Geelong in 2018, which forced him to miss the remainder of the season.
After extensive testing from cardiologists and a procedure to implant an internal monitor, Roberton was given the all clear to return to training.

The defender then completed a full pre-season, and after regular check-ups with cardiologists, was permitted to play with continued monitoring.
“It’s extremely frustrating because I physically feel fine, and if you exclude those two incidents, I’m as healthy as I’ve ever been,” Roberton said.

“Unfortunately, I need to listen to the professionals and take some more time out of the game.
“I still have a great desire to play at the highest level and want to make sure we look at every possibility.
“Given the club’s ability to add a player to the list, I wanted to make the call while they still had time to do so.”

St Kilda senior coach Alan Richardson praised Roberton’s resilience.
“Robbo is an incredibly selfless player, and nothing speaks more to that than his want to continue to play on and contribute to our group. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen this year,” Richardson said.

To lose a player of his calibre is no doubt a blow, but as he said to his teammates when he spoke to them today, he has enormous faith in our guys to step up and fill the void."
“The club, our medical staff, coaches and the players will support him through this period and with whatever comes in the future.
“Whether that’s working with the coaching staff again like he did last year, I’m sure Dylan will still play an important role for us in 2019 and be there to support his teammates.”
“We, like him, are hopeful a solution to his condition can be found and we can see him in Saints colours once again.”
The club asks for Dylan’s privacy to be respected at this time.

ST KILDA defender Dylan Roberton could look overseas for a solution to the heart condition that has stalled his AFL career.
Roberton will not play this season after a pre-season recurrence of the heart problem that first emerged last year during a match.

The 2017 Virgin Australia AFL All Australian nominee hopes to play again next season, but he and medical experts remain unsure about what is wrong with him.
"There is still a lot of work to do in terms of finding a diagnosis," Roberton told Channel Seven.
"I'm not doing much at the moment but hopefully looking to get a couple of opinions and maybe head overseas and see what the go is over there just to get a bit more of an understanding."

Roberton has had a surgical implant in the wake of the first incident.
He said the problem is with the heartbeat rhythm, not the heart itself.
"There's nothing wrong with the muscle ... it's just the electrical side of it," he said.
"They are not sure why it's happening, so hopefully we can find out before the end of the year."

Really worried for Dylan , given the doctors so far have been unable to discover the cause of his heart issues its hard to see him playing again . It would be a huge risk to his life if he did and he has a young family to think of. Terrible situation as there is no doubt that he would still walk into our team and pretty much any team if he was ok . If he can get the problem fixed he would really help our young backline . Can you image a fit Robbo with Wilkie , Battle , Carlisle , Geary , Webster , Brown , and a mix of either Coffield , Paton , Clark , Dmac , Marsh , Hind , Savage and possibly Mayo , Joyce and Bytel . That is an awesome mix of players to fill the backline spots , although i imagine after Clarks great second half of the season he will be pushed more midfield next year .

Doctors can be a pretty simple bunch sometimes. If someone has an erratic heart beat when their pulse rate gets really high, they are inclined to say, "avoid that high pulse rate , and here's some pills to keep it low ". That sort of treatment doesn't work with a professional athlete though.

Dylan Roberton has taken the first steps towards a remarkable comeback after almost two years out of the game.
After extensive consultations with medical professionals, both here and in the US, the 28-year-old has been returned to full training alongside his teammates in Week 1 of the pre-season.
Roberton’s return was sanctioned in October following conversations with experts in cardiology, the club and the AFL, which outlined the strict parameters that the star defender must meet to once again represent the red, white and black.
The rebounding defender is on medication to regulate his condition and must strictly comply to the treatment at all times to sufficiently minimise the risks.

The internal defibrillator implanted into Roberton’s chest will also remain to safeguard against any occurrences of heart arrythmia.
The Saints leader will be extensively tested and monitored as his training loads increase, with the hope of navigating a full pre-season.
But should he remain diligent, understand the risks, continue to be monitored and avoid another occurrence, Roberton will be given the green light to return to the field of battle in 2020.

The All-Australian nominee shocked the AFL world after collapsing during St Kilda’s clash with Geelong in Round 4, 2018, and was immediately ruled out for the rest of the season.
He was on the cusp of a return in 2019 after playing out two JLT Community Series matches, before his defibrillator kicked in at the conclusion of the final match.
Speaking to Triple M’s Hot Breakfast, Roberton was confident of making his return come Round 1, 2020.
“I had my first session back with the group the other day, but I’ve obviously been running the whole off-season so I’m feeling really good,” Roberton said.
“[I’ve] been managing what’s going to happen over the pre-season and hope to get back for Round 1.”
“Everyone’s really confident that if I’m diligent with my medication and [have] those regular check-ups with the cardiologist that everything’s going to be fine.”

Roberton is well aware of the gravity of his situation, but is optimistic about his prospects in the red, white and black.
“That first episode was obviously a pretty serious one, but obviously I wasn’t on medication then so there was no sort of control.
“I’ve been on medication to balance [my] heart if it does try to go off and do anything silly. It just regulates your heart and your blood pressure and that sort of thing, so I’m confident that’s going to keep me healthy.
“I’m really confident if anything serious is going to happen, a few things are going to have to go wrong.”
