How do you know he doesn't have friends in Melbourne? You don't. How do you know he'd rather live in Adelaide then Melbourne? You don't.

Hately completely different scenario. No Victorian clubs were interested in him. He spent his entire life in Adelaide & his family is there.

Weren't you the same poster claiming that Horne-Francis didn't want to leave SA? You have a track record of posting garbage.
Never lived in Melbourne, never went to school in Melbourne, never played football in Melbourne, but went to school in Adelaide, played football in Adelaide and played for SA in the champs. But somehow you think he has as many friends in Melbourne. It's almost laughable. He has far more ties to Adelaide than Melbourne. He said he wanted to play for the Crows and stay in Adelaide.
You are just clowning at this point.
If you feel so strongly, put up the wager. I have no inside info on if he is going to leave Sydney. I have no info on if the Crows want him. None. But I will run with that wager with you. If you truly believed what you wrote, and wernt just being a troll, you would happily take it up.

Secondly, where did I day Horne wanted to stay here? I repeated something a friend told me who was a North supporter about his interview at North. I asked if anyone had heard that.
If you then claim that is me saying he wants to stay in Adelaide then again, you are just trolling.

So you running with the wager?

First of all, what is this obsession with waging on an online forum?

Secondly - My point is pretty clear. You are basing too much on the fact Stephens spent two years at boarding school in Adelaide. If multiple clubs are interested (VIC, SA), I'd expect him to weigh them all up. Your view that he is a certainty to select Adelaide over potential Victorian suitors, is just made up dribble.

Again, strawman arguments.
I said if Adelaide value him, meaning the dollars are the same, he is more likely to come here than Melbourne due to his connections with the city.
Only a clown would say anything different.
We know he has friends here. We know he lived here. Before that he lived in Mildura which is closer to Adelaide than Melbourne by 150kms. Never lived in Melbourne. It's a absolute fact he has alot of pull here, and a wild, stupid stance by you that he might have as many friends in Melbourne.
Not to mention he said he wanted to stay here.
But this is just getting repeated now.
The wager is simple, if you were honest in believing that he is just as likely to go to a Vic club than Adelaide will all things being equal ($$$), then you have a 10-1 advantage and wouldn't have a problem to back it up.
But you are just trying to argue for the sake of it, or your Vic pride is hurt to think he might prefer Adelaide, whatever it is.
There is one thing we do know, he won't be going to North.

I disagree. Once again, you are putting far too much weight into 2 years of schooling.

If a club in Vic that he perceives to have more opportunity & likelihood of success, offer him the appropriate dollars, why would he knock it back for Adelaide? Because he spent 2 years of school there? No chance.

For example, if Richmond come knocking, for the same $ and opportunity to play midfield minutes along side Dusty & Bolton, you think he's going to be drawn by his 2 years of Adelaide schooling? Ha.

He has no connection with Melbourne. He is from Mildura and spent two years in Adelaide.
In his draft year he said "I’d love to go to the Crows and I’d love to stay here (in Adelaide), but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

If the Crows value him, and he doesn't re-sign with the Swans, my money would be on the Crows. I don't know that to be the case, just a logical guess.
Holy shit, 2 years in Adelaide! I'm surprised he hasn't requested a trade to the Crows already.

Who could blame him if he wanted to.

He's old enough to enjoy our wine regions now.

Having actually grown up in Mildura, I found that a significant number of kids move to the ‘big smoke’ after finishing high school. Particularly those not heading into trades… or onto the dole.

Probably more than half those going to uni end up in Melbourne.

So there’s really no reason to think at least some of his friends aren’t now in Melbourne. At least half of mine were.

Either way you can always make new friends… especially in a footy club.

Nothing story really. It literally notes that some of our other OOC players include Sam Reid, Callum Sinclair, Colin O'Riordan, and Ben Ronke. The latter two would be on similar money to Stephens, and the former two would comfortably be on more money than Stephens. Why would we let Stephens go over any of those listed?

Why are we all counting Port out of this? I'd have no issue giving up our late first for Stephens.

Could certainly end up at Port. But if he was leaving for more opportunity or more money, you have to guess that places like Adelaide or North Melbourne would be better for that. Easier to replace/displace a Lynch, Mackay, Atley, Dumont, etc. than guys like Duursma and Amon.

Genuine question, how does a young/re-building team have a cap squeeze? I get Buddy’s contract but who else is taking up all this cash?

Same as other clubs, we loaded contracts on an estimation of what future caps would be, due to COVID not only did the cap not increase
as we were expecting, but was actually cut by 9% this year (~$1.4m), and many of our contracts were signed with thoughts the cap would be $15m+, so we are looking at close to a $2m difference vs expectation.

Franklin is the big one, but Heeney is on big money cause we had to pay him 800+ to keep him when the Roos came knocking with a $1m/yr offer a few years back.

Then we have the same sort of profile as other clubs, JPK, Parker, Mills, Lloyd, Rampe, Papley on pretty decent coin

Reid, Hickey, Sinclair, Hewett, McCartin, Blakey, Rowbottom, Dawson on reasonable money

Then a bunch of draft picks / rookies on 80-150k, and its already obvious some of these will need payrises in coming years.
So whilst we already could back load contracts knowing that 1.4m of Franklin is disappearing over the next 2 years, thats probably not a smart decision if we use that to sign Stephens, but then lose Warner / Gulden / Etc

Edit:

To expand on the above

When clubs are trying to enter a period of success, they frontload contracts before they get good, then backload contracts during successful period to try get as much value out of their list as possible.

We have bounced back too quickly to allow us to frontload contracts, as we are still paying backloaded contracts from previous period at the top(ie Buddy), so it may not be that we can't sign players now, its that signing players now would be cutting our own throats in a few years time, and better to lose some players now, front load others and give us a solid 5-6 years in contention.

Good thing you didn't get Daniher then! Or it might be a Collingwood like situation.

Yeah, same happened with Martin to the blues from the suns..

Melbourne had the chance to “jump”.. they had a pick before carlton..

They even rang up Martin’s manager and asked if he would be keen to come over to the dees and they were kindly told no..

Once a player commits to another team.. they nearly always get there..
He probably should have said yes to Melbourne

North no doubt have their list drawn up who they will / already would have approached and if they wanted Stephens, they would be in an excellent space to go after him with good coin and pick 1 in the PSD. I'd hope Adelaide are into him and we may end up with pick 2 in the PSD so good leverage there - would come down to money and opportunity for the lad - but North would be in the box seat IF they really wanted to entice him over

PSD won't make a difference. I don't know why it still gets trotted out every year.
