Match Review

OUT OF NOWHERE, A WIN

images

PORT ADELAIDE - It was just past 7' of Q3 when J Patton scored a "miraculous goal" putting Hawthorn 42 points ahead of Port (14.9:93 to 8.3:51). The silence at Adelaide e-Oval was deafening. It felt as if it had been "game, set, match, Hawthorn." It wouldn't be the last time everyone present there felt that way, in what became a game for the history books.

The match had started even. In the first 20 minutes, both teams kept exchanging goals, and, by then, Port only trailed by 2 points (4.3 to 4.1). However, that soon changed. The Hawks took the reins right before QT and, but for a short time in Q2 when Port scored 3 consecutive goals, reducing the deficit to 15 points, they never looked back; well, "never" until Williams saved a goal from Lewis, and Westhoff kicked a major in the 15th minute of the third term.

Hawthorn was still leading by 32 points at that point, but everything changed from then on. After Patton's miracle, Port scored two goals (Rozee, Westhoff) against Hawks' two behinds (Patton, rushed). Port went on. At the beginning of the last term, Westhoff scored his third goal cutting the difference to 13 points (14.12 to 13.5). The stadium was rocking. The ground trembled. Hope had been restored. Could Port really comeback?

The Hawks said "no way!" Four consecutive scores later, and their advantage was back to 27 points. There was only 18 minutes remaining to play. Burgoyne caught Motlop holding the ball and finally put the game way for good. At least, that was what everybody watching the game was thinking. Some fans even started to walk towards the exit gates.

Bonner kicked a behind, which was followed by Westhoff's fourth major of the day. Then, Hawthorn scored two behinds in a row, putting the difference at 22 points with 13 minutes remaining. Rozee cut the lead to 16, and DBJ made it a two goal-game! Confidence at the stands had been restored. The sound of "POOOWEEER" echoed all around. Still, Hawthorn would silence those voices again. Smith put the Hawks up to 16 again with only 6 minutes remaining for the final siren.

More fans left the oval, convinced that it wasn't Port's day; and for a while, it certainly looked that way. Nothing was happening when, finally, out of nowhere, hell broke loose in Adelaide. Three minutes. Three unbelievable minutes. Three magical minutes. Three historical minutes. It was all Port needed to score four unanswered goals and win: Westhoff's fifth; followed by SPP's only major; and then Amon scored twice. The final score showed Port ahead by 8 points.

Those fans that decided to stay to the end were rewarded with a victory for the ages. Port may finally have found the confidence they needed to save the season.

Round 11: v. West Lakes

Match Preview

e-Showdown I

Derbies are not to be played; they must be won. Victory is all that matters. And this week brings a new chapter to the greatest rivalry in Australian sports: the first ever e-Showdown.

When Port and Crows meet for a face-off, it is irrelevant whether it is football, qooty, coin flip, or rock-paper-scissor. Losing is simply unacceptable.

Forget about ladder, momentum, home team, injuries, whatever. They mean nothing. It is only what happens from bounce to siren that counts.

Who's going to win? Anyone saying they know are either crazy or lying. Only Sunday, one of the two SA greats will receive the title of first e-Showdown winner in history.
