Fourth loss in 7 games put Port into the Bottom-4

PORT ADELAIDE - “In football, whenever you think you have learned something, it soon proves you that you were wrong. As harsh as it may be, that’s why we love it. So, we keep on trying,” philosophized coach Cadaver in the opening of his press conference after the loss against the Demons. “I wish I could blame the conditions and say that the game was lost at the coin toss, but that wouldn’t be true. The conditions affected both teams, and we couldn’t take advantage of it in the second quarter. The truth hurts, but is simple: they played better than us; and that’s on me.

Then, the first-year coach went on, revealing that the line-up had been an attempt on finding the right balance between youth and experience. However, and he recognized, it backfired. “When we finally settled down and got the composure we were looking for, it was already the second half, and the difference in the score was too big to overcome.Cadaver, as usual, refused to mention particular players. He has taken full responsibility, even though, there were many who played below their level. “The players have given their all. They were all exhausted in the end, I can tell you that. We played as hard has we can. We need to play better, but the will to win is definitely there.

In conclusion, the Port’s coach stressed that the season enters a new stage, with one game per week, and he hopes that the extra time for training and recover will allow his team to improve its game and to find the necessary consistency for qualifying to the Finals. “Still, we all know that there are other 17 coaches thinking exactly the same thing. I need to be better than them. So far, I haven’t; but let’s see what the future holds.

On the match itself, saying that it was windy at the MCG would be an understatement. During the entire time, the wind has blown tirelessly in the same direction. More than two thirds of all scores were in the same goal (40 to 19). Only in the second quarter that the team playing against the wind had more points, but with fewer scoring shots.

Melbourne won the coin toss and chose to play with the advantage, and they took it with gusto. It wasn’t pretty to see (unless you barrack for the Demons or against Port, of course). Port has managed to score two majors, but that was it. Mostly, Melbourne moved the ball relentlessly forward. It was a massacre. When the siren sounded, Port was already 37 points behind; and it could had been worse if not for a late goal from Georgiades. At QT, the score read 7.7:49 to 2.0:12.

There may have been some hope that the story could be different in the second quarter. Well, it was; but not quite as that which the Port faithful were expecting. Melbourne was able to put the ball on the ground, forcing contest after contest, literally taking the wind away from the Power. Desperate for results, Port began to force plays. Mistakes galore, and the Demons made them pay for each error. At HT, the difference had actually increased: 12.9:81 to 6.4:40.

The expectation at that point was for a beating of biblical proportion, since the wind would once again favor Melbourne. Truth be told, the Demons won the quarter again. However, the beating didn’t happen. Port had learned its lesson and adjusted accordingly. The game continued as it had been played in the previous term, but this time was Port who denied Melbourne the full advantage of the wind. The Demons couldn’t score at ease, like they had done in Q1. Still, the difference in the score got bigger: 16.12:108 to 9.6:60.

At Q4, there weren’t many people at the MCG thinking that Port could come back from an 8-goal deficit, even though they had the wind for them. There were even fewer when McDonald kicked two goals early in the term, nullifying majors from Wines and Powell-Pepper. However, the players wanted to prove those few believers right. They fought as hard has they could. Ultimately, however, despite their efforts, they fell three goals short. The game ended 19.14:128 to 17.9:111.

Both teams stay in Melbourne for the ANZAC Round. Port (15th) faces Carlton (17th) at Marvel, while Melbourne (9th) hosts Fremantle (4th) at the MCG.

Round 8: v. Carlton

Match Preview

Who Has the Power to End the Season’s Blues?

A low start, a couple of wins, some bad losses, and a struggle to find and maintain their best football. So far, this would describe the season of both Carlton and Port in the e-AFL. Port hasn’t win away, while Carlton has no victory at Marvel. Someone will have to give, right? Will we see a tie, instead? Can one of them use this week’s game as a cornerstone to a better year?

CARLTON – Not long ago, Carlton had back-to-back victories and was traveling interstate to play a winless GWS who had just lost embarrassingly to the Saints. Only one win out of the Top-8, confidence was high, there were similes everywhere, and the same speech was heard throughout the club: “the worst has passed; focus is on keeping moving up in the ladder.” However, things haven’t happened as were expected since. They were dominated by the Giants and by Geelong in consecutive games, and now they are back to searching their souls for answers.

PORT ADELAIDE – Port lost its first two matches. Since then, the season has been a rollercoaster ride, with two wins, two losses, a draw, and no consistency whatsoever. It would have been a story of Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hyde, if not for the fact that Port has lost all its away games so far in the season – against Fremantle, Cats, and Demons. At home, Port’s record is 2-1-1. Unfortunately for the Power, the match is in Melbourne. They will need to find a way of winning far from Adelaide if they want to play Finals.

Prediction: Carlton, by 5.
