How fitting that eBrisbane is hosting eMelbourne this week as we celebrate the 120th anniversary of Melbourne's first premiership. After finishing 6th on the ladder after the Home and Away season, the Melbourne Redlegs topped the ladder of their sectional matches to win a spot in the Sectional Final against the Essendon Same-Olds. This would've been the first Grand Final at Lake Oval if the minor premiers, the Fitzroy Maroons, had not challenged the winner of the sectional final for the premiership. So after Melbourne disposed of Essendon by 2 points, the Redlegs and Maroons faced off at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground (there was already an eMCG?) for either Melbourne's first silverware for the league, or Fitzroy's 3rd in a row. Here is what is written about how the match went.
Captain Dick Wardill won the toss, and kicked with a slight breeze. Lou Barker immediately eluded two Redleg defenders to notch first blood for Fitzroy, but Tim Ryan answered for Melbourne - Melbourne led at the first change by fifteen points to ten. The second term was rather a negative one, as the Melbourne rucks endeavored to bog down the Fitzroy attacks, by forcing the ball continually out of bounds. So successful was the tactic that the Maroons could only manage one major - from a strong mark by Mick Grace - for the quarter. At the half-way mark, Melbourne still led by two points, and they increased this lead with a brilliant third term which netted them two goals three to nothing and, as it turned out, won them the game. With a long lead, Melbourne again adopted their second quarter tactics of keeping the ball as close to the boundary line as possible. Although they scored only two points themselves in the last term, they held Fitzroy to one goal five, which was sufficient to give them a four point win and the pennant. It was a shock defeat for the confident Fitzroy, who were aiming for a 'hat-trick' of premierships. In fact, in anticipating victory, they had previously arranged for their carriages, decorated in maroon and blue and inscribed 'Fitzroy - Premiers 1900', to be waiting at the ground to race them to their premiership dance.

It would take Melbourne a further 26 years to see premiership glory again, but once they did it was hard to stop them winning... until they did. Fitzroy's loss wouldn't stop them from being one of the most dominant teams in the early stages of the league, but as all good things do, Fitzroy's golden age would end and have since been split in two, with one half in Brisbane and the other half in the VAFA.
